Londoners react to Royal nurse death
Londoners react to news that a nurse who took a prank call at the London hospital that was treating Prince William's pregnant wife Kate for morning sickness has been found dead, the hospital said on Friday. Jacintha Saldanha, a nurse at the hospital which treated the Duchess of Cambridge, has been found dead in a suspected suicide after she was duped by a hoax caller from an Australian radio station. Ms Saldanha, a 46-year-old mother of two, was found unconscious near the King Edward VII Hospital, where the Duchess spent three nights earlier this week being treated for severe pregnancy sickness. Paramedics tried to revive her but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the cause of her death was "unexplained" but they were not treating it as suspicious. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said they were "deeply saddened" to be told of her death. Hospital confirms death of nurse who took royal hoax call
A nurse who passed on the hoax royal phone call at the hospital which treated the Duchess of Cambridge has reportedly been found dead in a suspected suicide. In a statement, the hospital said: "It is with very deep sadness that we confirm the tragic death of a member of our nursing staff, Jacintha Saldanha. Jacintha has worked at the King Edward VII Hospital for more than four years, she was an excellent nurse and a well respected and popular member of staff with all her colleagues. Egypt: thousands protest against President Morsi power decree
Thousands of protesters marched on the Egyptian President's palace in Cairo on Friday in a fresh attempt to reverse a decree placing Morsi's decisions beyond judicial review. Speaking in a televised address, the president remained defiant, saying he would not tolerate anyone working towards the overthrow of his "legitimate" government. "We respect peaceful freedom of speech but will never allow anyone to take part in killings and sabotage," he said. Mr Morsi vowed to push on with a Dec 15 referendum on a controversial new constitution, saying "afterwards, there should be no obstacle and everyone must follow its will." He invited political groups, judges and the opposition to meet on Saturday for talks over the political crisis gripping the country. "I call for a full, productive dialogue with all figures and heads of parties, revolutionary youth and senior legal figures to meet this Saturday." Following the speech, the main opposition alliance, the National Salvation Front, said it was assessing Mr Morsi's offer of talks, but some pro-democracy activists declared they would not take part. The speech did little to quell ongoing violence on the streets of Cairo, which has left at least six dead and some 700 injured, with angry protestors storming the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood and setting fire to the building. The Snowman composer performs Christmas tune on piano
The Snowman composer performs Christmas tune on piano. Howard Blake was invited to compose music for the 1982 animated film of Raymond Briggs' 1978 children's book The Snowman. "I decided I wanted to write a symphony based on the theme of innocence, but I wasn't sure where to start. Then I was walking along the beach one day, thinking about this symphony, when six notes came into my head." He felt instinctively that these notes were significant in some way and scribbled them down, adding a few extra bars. The piece became Walking in the Air, and was performed in the film by St Paul's Cathedral choirboy Peter Auty. Three years later it went to number five in the charts when the song was recorded by Welsh chorister Aled Jones. "There is something about that tune that spells something to people about freedom and joy and loss and all the things they would like to regain," says Blake, who drew inspiration for the score from a painful and unsettling episode of his life. The Snowman, the enchanting story of a boy and his snowman who comes alive, is now firmly established as a Christmas classic, and has been shown on Channel Four every year since it was first broadcast in 1982. This year, The Snowman is being released in a special 30th anniversary edition DVD. Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal arrives in Gaza
Khaled Meshaal, Hamas's exiled leader, kissed the soil of Gaza as he stepped on to the Palestinian land for the first time in 45 years for a "victory rally". Accompanied by his deputy, Mussa Abu Marzuk, and other senior officials, Meshaal drove through the crossing and then got out and kissed the ground before embracing Gaza's Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniya. "I hope God will make me a martyr on the land of Palestine in Gaza," Mr Meshaal said. The Islamist group's leader, who has not visited the Palestinian Territories since leaving the West Bank at age 11, emerged emboldened from the eight day conflict which ended in a ceasefire he negotiated under Egypt's auspices. "His visit is fruit of the victory achieved by the resistance over the occupation," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said, hours before Mr Meshaal was due to arrive via the Egyptian border into the tiny coastal enclave. Hundreds of police and security forces were on duty at the Rafah crossing, some of them wearing black masks and riding in open trucks, with heavy machineguns attached to the rear. Japan earthquake: eyewitness describes shaking buildings
Telegraph reporter Julian Ryall describes how buildings shook for more than a minute as an earthquake struck Japan's east coast. A tsunami measuring slightly over 3 feet high hit the Ayukawa district of Ishinomaki at 6.02 pm local time, although there were no immediate reports of injuries. More tsunami warnings were in force for the rest of Miyagi Prefecture, as well as Aomori, Fukushima and Iwate prefectures. Warnings had been issued on television and radio channels immediately after the magniude 7.3 quake struck at 5.18 pm and residents of coastal regions and low-lying areas had been ordered to evacuate to higher ground. The quake was the most severe since much of north-east Japan was devastated by the magnitude-9 earthquake on March 11, 2012, and inevitably caused concern among local residents. Train services across much of north-east Japan were suspended for safety checks while aircraft scheduled to land at Sendai Airport - which was severely damaged and flooded after the last earthquake - were diverted to alternative airports. The operators of the Fukushima nuclear plant reported that the quake had no impact on efforts to bring the crippled reactors under control. It was reported that emergency teams working at the reactors were temporarily evacuated from the site. Space flights to moon on offer by 2020
On the 40th anniversary of the launch of the final manned mission to the moon by Apollo 17, private US company, Golden Spike, announces plans to offer manned space flights to the surface of the moon by 2020. The company made the announcement on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the launch of the Apollo 17, which was the last manned mission to the moon. The founders of the company, including former Nasa executive Alan Stern and former Apollo flight director Gerry Griffin, discussed the company's plans for the future at a National Press Club briefing in Washington DC. "Our vision is to create a reliable and affordable, US-based commercial human lunar transportation system that enables the exploration of the moon, by humans from virtually any nation, or any corporation, or any individual wishing to accomplish objectives on the moon," Mr Griffin said. Golden Spike estimates that each two-man mission to the moon will cost approximately $1.4 billion. Alan Stern, the company's CEO, said there are numerous countries that could be interested in a manned trip to the moon. Hundreds call on Morsi to step down
Hundreds of demonstrators march from downtown Cairo to the Presidential Palace demanding that Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi step down. Demonstrators marched from downtown Cairo to the Presidential Palace demanding the resignation of Egypt elected president Mohamed Morsi. "The people want the downfall of the regime," the demonstrators chanted while waving Egyptian flags. President Morsi infuriated his opponents with a November 22 decree that expanded his powers. His opponents accuse him of seeking to create a new "dictatorship". The president says his actions were necessary to prevent courts still full of judges appointed by Mubarak from derailing a constitution vital for Egypt's political transition. Egypt's Republican Guard restored order around the presidential palace on Thursday after clashes killed seven people, but passions ran high in a contest over the country's future. Jacob Zuma: I have never refused a task from the ANC
In an interview with The Daily Telegraph in Pretoria, Jacob Zuma of South Africa confirms he was ready for a second term as president of the African National Congress (ANC). The party meets on December 16 to choose a new president and Mr Zuma has fought off a revolt against his leadership. Re-election to the post automatically crowns Mr Zuma as the party's candidate in the 2014 election. After months of violent protests on the mines and within major industries, Mr Zuma said his government would step up the pace of economic reform but would not "break" existing businesses to do so. "Nationalisation is not the ANC policy," he said. "There are fundamental issues that need to be dealt with. It would be useful to do it quickly but we've got to balance things because we don't want to break things in order to move forward." Euro 2020 to be staged across continent
UEFA confirms the European Championship in 2020 will be staged in cities across the continent to spread the financial load of hosting the tournament. Wembley will be put forward to host both a semi-final and the final, while Wales and Scotland have also confirmed that they will bid to stage matches. The Scottish FA said that it would consider offering Hampden Park, Ibrox or Celtic Park in Glasgow as a possible venue for the final. Wembley, though, has emerged among the early favourites to host the first final of a major international football tournament since it reopened in 2007. Having been selected to stage the Champions League final later this season, for the second time in three years, Wembley also has the advantage of an immediate platform from which to showcase itself. "Clearly Wembley is incredibly highly thought of by Uefa and it is something we will push for," said David Bernstein, the FA chairman. "Uefa want to hold the semi-finals and the final on the same ground, or in the same city, and I think we would be on their shortlist, but there would be some strong competition. The public want it and we'd want it and it would be wonderful to have it here." Uefa's executive committee took the decision at a meeting in Lausanne on Thursday, despite opposition from Turkey, which had bid to host the tournament alone but is also hoping to stage the Olympics in the same year. It was stressed that the pan-continental Euro 2020 would be a one-off rather than a model of future ... From: telegraphtv Views: 181 6 ratings Time: 01:11 More in Sports

Northern Ireland riots
A number of police officers were injured in Northern Ireland in a second night of rioting this week, just hours before US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visits to lend support to the province's fragile peace. Up to 1600 pro-British loyalists, enraged at a decision by nationalist councillors to remove the Union Jack flag from above the entrance of Belfast City Council, battled again with police, fifteen of whom were injured after the council decision on Monday. Police fired plastic bullets when they came under attack with bricks, bottles and other missiles in Carrickfergus, county Antrim, a few miles outside Belfast. Four people were arrested, a police spokesman said and police officers were injured, though he declined to give a number. An office belonging to the centrist, nonsectarian Alliance Party, whose support enabled the nationalists' vote to bring down the British flag, was also ransacked and set on fire during the rioting, according to a spokesman for the fire services. One of the party's members of parliament for Belfast, Naomi Long, said earlier on Wednesday that she had received death threats over the council's decision. The violence was condemned by pro-British unionists, whose loss of their Belfast City Council majority last year prompted the vote to remove the flag on all but 17 days of the year after it had flown continuously for more than 100 years. Toxic cloud in Buenos Aires
Office buildings in the Argentina capital are evacuated as toxic gas cloud covers the city's business district and port area. The cause of the foul smelling smoke was thought to be the result of a shipping container fire at the city's central port. An intense sulfur-like odour, combined with mild eye and respiratory irritation caused many people to flee offices and homes. While the exact content of the container was still under investigation, officials claimed that it was only mildly toxic and did not pose any immediate health risks. "The emergency manuals say that this product is mildly toxic, that it only causes irritation to the mucous membranes and skin. Obviously, the investigators are going to take samples to verify that the actual contents of the container correspond to what is listed. But, at this point it seems that we are dealing with a solid carbonate, something that has a low level of toxicity," said security secretary, Sergio Berni.
