Sasha is a Russian immigrant and a conservatory student. He is drawn to the popular music while experiencing life in New York. The movie explores through music the clash of Sasha's family values with the excitement of the pop culture. Julliard-trained violinist Philippe Quint plays the main character and performed the music for the film. It is Philippe's big screen debut. I consider the world of theatre and cinema to be an art that requires you to spend as much time to master as I did to learn to play the violin." Quint's role in Downtown Express is the first time a classical musician is featured as the lead in an American independent film. His partner in the film Nellie McKay is a musician as well and it was the first time for her to work on screen with Russian performers.
