After the surprising election defeat on Sunday of Greece's two traditional ruling parties, the second place winner, the Left Coalition Party, is struggling to form an effective strategy to deal with the changes in government and mount a defense against a sagging economy. Today, the Left Coalition leader Alexis Tsipras ruled out uniting with the more conservative New Democracy party, after meeting with its leader Antonis Samaras. [Alexis Tsipras, Left Coalition Party Leader]: "He has signed up for the second bailout agreement, and the new, painful measures which are foreseen in the agreement, and which are expected to come in the next few days even." The Left Coalition party is decidedly anti-bailout. After meeting today's meeting, Tsipras said he would try to form a government with other, more ideologically similar leftist parties.
