Analysts Weigh in on Japan and China's Island Dispute
The Japanese government is stepping up surveillance around a disputed chain of islands in the East China Sea. Earlier on Friday it had demanded that six Chinese patrol ships leave the area around the Diaoyu or Senkaku Islands, which Japan claims as its own. Both Japan and the Chinese regime are sending strong messages to the other side, warning their respective claim over the islands could lead to more serious conflict. Political Commentator Wu Fan says Beijing has several factors to consider. The Communist Party is facing a turbulent power transition later this year, and faces a myriad of problems back home. Entering into an all-out conflict with Japan would further complicate matters for the regime. [Wu Fan, Political Commentator] "To fight or not to fight? If it maintains the status quo, [the Chinese regime] would need to spend energy to protect its interest in the Diaoyu Islands. Right now it's considering these options. If it engages in war and wins, that's fine...but what happens if it doesn't win? Right now is a critical stage to consider the next step." The Chinese regime has warned Japan that its decision to purchase the Diaoyu islands would hurt trade between the two countries. Assistant Professor Frank Tian Xie from the University of South Carolina Aiken believes the Communist Party would itself want to avoid the ramifications of any damage to the economy. Wang Lijun to Face Trial on September 18th
Wang Lijun, the former police chief of Chongqing, will face trial next Tuesday, according to several media reports. According to the BBC, a court official from the Chengdu Intermediate People's Court told reporters that Wang will stand trial at the court on September 18th. Lianhe Zaobao, a Singapore based Chinese language media, has also reported the trial date. Earlier this month, state-run media announced Wang had been charged with several offenses. This follows the conviction of Gu Kailai, the wife of Wang's former boss, Bo Xilai, for the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood. Gu received a death sentence with a two-year suspension for the murder. Wang is accused of covering up Heywood's murder. He also faces charges of defection, taking bribes and abuse of power. State-run media had said earlier that evidence against Wang was "clear and abundant." Wang triggered a political storm for the Chinese Communist Party after he fled to the US Consulate in Chengdu on February 6th. He has not been seen since February, after being taken to Beijing by security officials. Huawei, ZTE Face US Lawmakers Over Espionage Concerns
Two of China's largest telecommunication-equipment makers yesterday confronted a US congressional hearing over concerns about their expansion into the US. US lawmakers are worried that Huawei and ZTE may have links to the Chinese government and their development in the US could bring risks of cyber-attacks and spying. The executives of the two companies on Thursday denied they are government controlled. During the hearing, the Chinese executives faced accusations that their companies had not cooperated with an investigation to verify their independence from the China's communist regime. US Republican Representative Mike Rogers, who heads the US House Intelligence Committee, claims Huawei and ZTE failed to provide full answers and offered, quote, "very few" documents for the committee's investigation. Representative Adam Schiff says even if the companies has no ties to the Chinese regime, Chinese law would give authorities the ability to inspect their communication devices. Huawei's CEO, Ren Zhengfei, founded the company in 1987 after he left the People's Liberation Army. His background spurred concerns that Huawei's expansion would undermine telecom security in the US. In August, the International Herald Leader%mdasha newspaper under state-run Xinhua News Agency%mdashreported that in an attempt to improve its public image in the US, Huawei hired a former US Homeland Security Department official, Donald Andy Purdy, as its chief security officer. In July, the FBI began investigating ... From: NTDTV Views: 92 1 ratings Time: 02:34 More in News & Politics

Laptop Buyers Beware: Viruses Preinstalled
Laptop buyers beware%mdashone of the latest malicious software to be discovered may already be installed on your new computer. Microsoft researchers in China discovered malware on the hard drives of 20% the new laptop computers they had bought for testing. On the latest posting on Microsoft's blog, Assistant General Counsel Richard Boscovich, from the Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit says, (quote) "We found malware capable of remotely turning on an infected computer's microphone and video camera, potentially giving a cybercriminal eyes and ears into a victim's home or business." Most of the computers were infected with the malicious software program called Nitol. Boscovich says Microsoft will, (quote) "continue to work to protect people that use our products and services from these threats and the cybercriminals behind them." New York City's Adult Playgrounds
Adult playgrounds offer an array of exercise equipment to help New Yorkers fight the fat for free. Full Story: New York City has introduced playgrounds for adults, moving the notion away from them being strictly for children. In an effort to produce healthier lifestyles, the Parks Department has set up a bunch of playgrounds that have the look and feel of a children's space. These, however, lack slides and other traditional children's playground equipment, instead including regular gym equipment, and a track. [Nancy Prince, Deputy Design Chief for NYC Parks & Recreation Department]: "To a lot of people this looks like children's play equipment and it's the same materials, the same durable materials, but it's just more customized to be this more gym-type outdoor equipment. So just as we can put a lot of fitness activities and play activities for kids, we can add this to our whole component of things for adults." The first playground has been tested for the past two years at the Macombs Dam Park in the Bronx, at the foot of Yankee Stadium. It is not the first time the city has placed outdoor exercise equipment in its parks, but it has not done it at a level like this. [Nancy Prince, Deputy Design Chief for NYC Parks & Recreation Department]: "We have been putting in some adult exercise equipment for adults, pieces here and there since the 1930s, but this is a new concept where we have a whole bunch of units and the individual units target individual muscle groups on the ... China Sends Patrol Ships as Dispute with Japan Heats Up
Tension between Japan and the Chinese is intensifying. Earlier today six Chinese surveillance ships confronted Japanese Coast Guard in the waters just off the Diaoyu, or Senkaku Islands, as they're known in Japan. Chinese state-run CCTV showed pictures of an officer on board a Chinese surveillance ship warning the Japanese Coast Guard to withdraw from "China's waters." [Chinese Surveillance Vessel]: "Patrol ship of the Japanese Coast Guard, this is China Maritime Surveillance ship No. 50. The Diaoyu islands and affiliated islets have been Chinese territory since ancient times. China has sufficient historical and legal basis on this. Your ship has already violated the sovereignty and sovereign rights of the People's Republic of China. Any unilateral action taken by your side is illegal and invalid. Please stop all your offensive actions. Otherwise, you will bear all the consequences, over." The Japanese coast guard said it ordered the Chinese ships to leave the area, only three complied initially. The others, according to the Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura, left later. [Osamu Fujimura, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary]: "We have received on-site reports that the Chinese ships left our sovereign territorial waters by 1:30 pm (0430 GMT) this afternoon and all six ships left our country's territorial waters by 2:38 pm (0538). Today." The sovereignty row between the two Asian giants heightened this week after Japan announced it would purchase the islands from ... It is especially humbling for Muhammad, who has said on many occasions, "All I did was stand up for what I believe." The heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist was also an outspoken fighter for religious and civil rights. Dramatic scenes as Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupts, sending smoke and ash half a mile into the air. Full Story: Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupted on Thursday, forcing the evacuation of thousands of people. Ash and smoke spew into the air, rising half a mile above the crater. The volcano is located just 25 miles southwest of the capital Guatemala City. 8000 people have already been evacuated, according to Guatemala's National Emergency Operations Centre, more commonly known as CONRED. A further 23000 people are awaiting evacuation, reported CONRED. [David De Leon, National Emergency Operations Centre, Spokesperson]: "Up to now and in accordance with the increase (in volcanic activity) that has been seen, it's been necessary to evacuate the communities located in the southwest of the volcano. The communities of Panimache, Santa Sofia and Morelia are the ones being evacuated at the moment. Authorities have declared an orange alert and implemented and installed a command post in San Juan Alotenango, from where arrangements for the population are being made." Anti-Japanese Protests Continue in Beijing
Anti-Japanese protests continued today as more than 100 gathered outside the Japanese embassy in Beijing on Thursday. Protesters held up placards and defaced Japanese flags and punched their fists in the air as they chanted slogans. Long-running territorial disputes flared last month when Japan detained a group of Chinese activists who had landed on an uninhabited island group in the East China Sea. The islands are known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China. Tension increased on Tuesday when Japan, which controls the islands, said it had bought them from a private owner. The row led to anti-Japanese protests in China last month and again this week protests have taken place in cities across China. Individual protesters now say they would not buy Japanese products, others are calling for a wider boycott. Tensions over the islands are likely to harm trade ties between the world's second- and third-largest economies, China's Vice Commerce Minister said on Thursday. Chinese state-run media has said two patrol ships have been sent to reassert the Chinese regime's claim to the islands, but Japan's coastguard said it had not yet seen any Chinese patrol vessels. Reuters Poll: China's Slowdown Extends to Third Quarter Delaying Recovery
China's economy is expected to slow down further this quarter... going below 8 percent. Reuters polled 20 economists who believe the median forecast is 7.4 percent growth in the July to September period compared to the previous year. The survey also predicted a growth of 7.7 percent for 2012, lower than a July poll forecast of 8 percent. Earlier polls in July showed a quicker and stronger upturn with 7.9 percent growth in the third quarter and 8.2 percent in the fourth. The slowdown reflects a lack of urgent policy action for the past two months to bring down the cost of credit. The upcoming leadership transition in the Chinese Communist Party slated for next month is seen as one of the reasons for policymakers' inaction towards monetary easing. Will China Boycott Japanese Products?
China and Japan's territorial dispute over a small group of uninhabited islands may be threatening important trade ties. China's Commerce Ministry said today that trade with Japan could be hurt by the sudden flare-up in tension over the East China Sea. Protests across China have called for a boycott of Japanese products, which are popular with newly-wealthy Chinese consumers. This comes after Japan announced on Tuesday that it's purchasing the Senkaku Islands from a private Japanese owner. A Nissan Motor executive said last week that tensions have hurt sales in China, following recent attacks on Japanese cars during protests. China's Vice Minister of Commerce Jiang Zengwei has hinted that China's leadership saw nothing wrong with boycotts of Japanese goods. While individual protesters have embraced the boycott, it hasn't yet appeared on a large scale. China is Japan's largest trading partner. In 2011, their bilateral trade grew 14.3 percent in value to a record $345 billion. Congressional Hearing Urges US to Stop Forced Organ Harvesting China
The Chinese regime may have killed tens of thousands of prisoners of conscience for their organs. That's according to the panel of experts and witnesses at a US Congressional hearing on Tuesday. [Chris Smith, US Representative (R-NJ)]: "If this is true, even the powerful fraught legal term 'crimes against humanity' seems inadequate." China's transplant industry boomed in the early 2000s. China's Health Ministry has claimed that about 90% of the 10000 organs transplanted each year come from executed prisoners. On Tuesday, Dr. Damon Noto said those numbers don't add up. Dr. Noto says there are simply not enough prisoners sentenced to death each year to supply that many organs, especially given the need to match blood types, tissues and other factors. Because of these and several other reasons, Dr. Noto says that China's transplant system must have access to a living supply of organs%mdashone that's outside of the regular legal system. [Damon Noto, MD; Spokesman, Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting]: "It has been, through many different investigations, that we now come to believe that it's prisoners of conscience, including Falun Gong practitioners, Tibetans, Uighurs, house Christians who are being killed for their organs. And many of us now believe that the practitioners of Falun Gong may be one of the worst victims, because they are believed by many to comprise the largest population of prisoners of conscience in China."
