It came after Chongqing's former police chief also tried to seek protection by the US Some mainland Chinese believe this is a reflection of how Chinese people view the United States, despite of the propaganda they receive from the Chinese regime. First it was Chongqing's former police chief Wang Lijun, and then it was the blind rights lawyer Chen Guangcheng. These two very different individuals have made international headlines this year after seeking refuge at embassies of the United States. The last time this happened was back in 1989. That's when one of the catalysts behind the Tiananmen Square democracy protest sought asylum at the US Embassy in Beijing. Fang Lizhi was granted protection, and spent the rest of his life in the United States before passing away in April this year. The author Zhu Xinxin says these recent high-profile cases highl ight the failure of the Chinese regime's anti-America campaign of the last several decades.
