The territorial dispute between China and Japan over the Diaoyu Islands shows no sign of cooling. After weeks of strong rhetoric and sometimes violent rioting, some observers have wondered why the Chinese regime has suddenly turned up the dial on the subject %mdashespecially when it had opportunities to resolve the dispute before. Veteran Hong Kong journalist Ching Cheong was amongst the first to advocate Chinese ownership of the Diaoyu Islands. He recently published an article criticizing the Communist regime for passing up four chances to settle the ownership dispute with Japan. In 1971, when the United States handed over authority over the Ryuku Islands back to Japan, it included the Diaoyu Islands as well. Ching wrote that while the Chinese regime disputed that handover, it stopped short of engaging diplomatic channels to challenge it. A year later, the Chinese regime resumed diplomatic ties with Japan. It declined Japan's offer to pay war crimes compensation, and left the ownership issue of Diaoyu Islands aside. In 1978, as the two sides concluded a peace treaty, the then Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping told visiting Japanese Foreign Minister Sunao Sonada that the Diaoyu Islands issue can be left for the next generation. Then, in 1996, after a Hong Kong activist drowned in the waters of the Islands, Ching claimed Japanese authorities indicated they were open to discussing the ownership issues with the Chinese regime. US Sets Final Anti-Dumping Duties on Chinese Solar Panels
To combat the dumping of Chinese solar panels, the US has set heavy duties on billions of dollars worth of solar panel imports from the Mainland. China's solar industry is heavily subsidized by the Chinese government, creating an oversupply of panels, and dumping at much lower rates. The Commerce Department says Chinese companies were dumping solar cells and panels at prices 18 to 250 percent below market price. The imposed duties could range from 30 to 250 percent depending on the company and the government subsidy they receive. The Commerce Department also set countervailing duty rates ranging about 15 to 16 percent to compensate for the subsidies. The imposing of anti-dumping duties is currently limited to panels made of Chinese solar cells, and excludes panels made of non-Chinese solar cells. China has warned the US stance could damage US-China trade relations and slower the development of solar energy sector. Clashes between the Syrian army and rebels have intensified along the border recently. Mortars landed outside of Azmarin and machinegun fire could be heard from the Turkish side. The military presence in Turkey has also increased greatly along the border in the past week in response to mortar shelling that has come from northern Syria. It is unclear if those shells were purposeful strikes or overshot rounds. However, Turkey has retaliated using air strikes, and NATO has expressed its support for its fellow member state.
