The government, in fear of more riots breaking out, mobilized a big part of its police and military force to ensure safety. It's National Independence Day in Greece. And that's usually a time of festive celebration, but today Athens looked like a city under siege. Around 4000 police officers were under strict orders to provide special security for a number of VIP's attending the Independence Day parade in Athens. But the extra security seemed to put a damper on Independence Day celebrations for many locals. [Unidentified Athens Resident]: "I'd like to ask those gentlemen over there, what right do they have to rid me of my right to attend and watch the parade? I'm really disappointed... I'm really and deeply disappointed by this sight today. As for these people there, wearing green and blue uniforms, they better find another job..." What with the large number of anti-austerity protests in Athens recently, the authorities were worried about riots breaking out and attacks on officials. Anyone who wanted to approach the VIP section - even reporters - had to get special permits from the police. But even the Police Union responded negatively to the strict security measures.
