Women Senators, Tribal Leader Discuss Importance of VAWA Improvements
April 25, 2012 - US Senators Patty Murray, Barbara Boxer, and Amy Klobuchar join with Deborah Parker, Vice Chairwoman of the Tulalip Tribes to discuss the importance of passing the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The VAWA reauthorization bill contains critical improvements that will provide new protections for victims of domestic violence that are not currently covered by the law. Among these improvements is the ability for local justice officials in tribal communities to bring non-Indians who live and commit crimes against women on tribal lands to justice. Currently, US Attorneys decline to prosecute a majority of violent crimes that occur in Indian country, including an overwhelming amount of sexual abuse related cases.
