Wicker Speaks on the Senate Floor Regarding Urgent Need for a Budget
WASHINGTON, DC -- Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) today spoke on the Senate Floor regarding the urgent need for a budget. The Democrat-controlled Senate has not passed a budget in over three years, even though it is required by law. In part, Wicker said: "Last month, we passed the three-year mark -- now more than 1100 days -- since Senate Democrats fulfilled one of the basic obligations of this legislative body and passed a federal budget." In part, Wicker said, "Families, businesses, and organizations in my home state of Mississippi and across the country know the importance of having a sensible budget and living within it. Likewise, taxpayers deserve to see a blueprint of where their money is going and how much will be spent. Washington must be held accountable." ### wicker.senate.gov From: SenatorWicker Views: 52 0 ratings Time: 10:03 More in News & Politics

Wicker Floor Remarks on 2nd Anniversary of Oil Spill
WASHINGTON, DC -- Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) today spoke on the Senate Floor regarding the upcoming second anniversary of the Deep Horizon explosion and oil spill. Wicker urged the House of Representatives to pass the RESTORE Act, which would direct Clean Water Act fines resulting from the incident to Mississippi and other Gulf states that were affected. The Senate passed the legislation last month as part of the Highway Bill reauthorization. In part, Wicker said: "I urge the House of Representatives to show the same support for the Gulf Coast in passing this important piece of legislation. Both parties can agree that the revitalization of our Gulf States is a priority and that local leaders are instrumental to recovery efforts. The accident that occurred two years ago was an extraordinary tragedy with long-term consequences, and we cannot forget about the needs that persist." Senator Wicker on Fox News to Discuss Sanctions Against Iran
WASHINGTON, DC -- Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) appeared today on Fox News to talk about new sanctions on Iran's oil exports by targeting those that purchase oil from this hostile regime. In part, Wicker said: "There is a strong bipartisan majority in the House and Senate to go forward with these sanctions. I think he is doing the right thing because the issue is regarding nuclear weapons in the hands of the Iranian regime, and it is too important." Wicker: Americans are Right to Wonder What other Promises President is Making
WASHINGTON, DC -- Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) on Thursday spoke on the Senate Floor regarding the disturbing comments that President Obama made on Monday to outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev at the Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, South Korea. The exchange, which was recorded by a Russian journalist, suggests that President Obama's stance on missile defense will change after the November election. In part, Wicker said: "Even the hint of compromising on our missile defense capability is reckless when the prospect of nuclear-armed missiles is a real and growing threat. Equally alarming is the looming question lingering over what the President actually means when he says 'more flexibility.'" "The Administration continues to press for resetting bilateral relations but fails to follow through on an approach that is mindful of how Russia has not made good on its promises in the past. We have no reason to believe that greater cooperation will come from giving the Russians what they want, and yet the President seems willing to put his cards on the table anyway." Wicker Highlights Need for Energy Security on Senate Floor
WASHINGTON, DC -- Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) today spoke on the Senate Floor regarding maximizing America's energy potential. Wicker also highlighted the impact of rising fuel costs on American families and businesses. In part, Wicker said: "Today's high gas prices confirm the urgency of pursuing better energy strategies as demand for oil continues to increase across the globe. Taking steps now is essential to meeting future needs and bringing relief to the pump." Wicker also highlighted the economic impact of high gas prices on Americans: %bull Today, the national average price of a gallon of regular gasoline is $3.91. (Source: AAA) %bull Americans spent more on gasoline in 2011 (more than $481 billion) than in any other year in the past three decades. (Source: Oil Price Information Service) %bull For the average household, about 8.4 percent of the family budget -- or $4155 -- went toward filling up at the pump last year. Wicker Floor Remarks on the 2nd Anniversary of Health Care Law
WASHINGTON, DC -- Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) today spoke on the Senate Floor regarding the second anniversary of the President's health care law. Wicker highlighted the broken promises of the law and its effect on spending, jobs, premiums, and Medicare. In part, Wicker said: "On Friday, two years will have passed since President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act into law. More than enough time has gone by to reveal the failures of this massive, burdensome piece of legislation. The fact that 26 states -- more than half the country -- are part of a legal challenge currently under review by the Supreme Court points to an inevitable truth: This is a law that does not work. Americans are right to be disappointed, and they are right to want repeal. A recent Gallup poll shows twice as many Americans think the law will make things worse for their families than those who believe it will make things better. Seventy-two percent think the "individual mandate" is unconstitutional. The truth is that Americans deserve affordable, high-quality health care -- not a 2700-page, big-government piece of legislation that taxes, spends, and regulates. The President's health-care law has not lowered the cost of health care as promised. It has not created jobs as promised. It has not reduced the deficit as promised. And so, this week, we mark an anniversary not with progress but with bitter realities." From: SenatorWicker Views: 32 0 ratings Time: 30:18 More in News & Politics

Wicker Speaks on Senate Floor in Opposition to the President's Recess Appointments.mp4
WASHINGTON, DC -- Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) on Thursday spoke on the Senate Floor regarding the President's recent appointments of Richard Cordray as the director to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and three new members to the National Labor Relations Board. The President claimed that Congress was in recess while the Senate was in session, setting a troubling precedent. In part, Wicker said: "I am deeply concerned that this presumptuous action by the President poses profound and dangerous implications. As others have suggested, President Obama's abuse of his recess appointment power could lead to unilateral "recess" appointments anytime, such as during lunch or in the middle of the night. As I said before, it is my hope that both parties will rise to defend the separated powers our Founders put in place to prevent tyranny and the misuse of authority." Senator Wicker Highlights National Crime Victims' Rights Week Resolution on Senate Floor
WASHINGTON, DC -- US Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) on Tuesday applauded Senate passage of a resolution he authored supporting National Crime Victims' Rights Week. This year, the week will be observed April 22-28. The Wicker resolution, which passed the Senate by unanimous consent, was co-sponsored by Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Charles Schumer (DN.Y.), and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa). "We have come a long way since the days when crime victims had access to few rights and services," said Wicker. "Yet it is also true that too many crimes are still committed, that not all crimes are reported, and that many crime survivors still struggle to overcome the lasting effects of crime. National Crime Victims' Rights Week offers us the opportunity each year to highlight the needs of crime survivors, recognize those who help them, and engage the public in the fight for victims' rights." Nearly 20 million Americans are victims of crime each year, and these individuals and their families are confronted with unique and difficult challenges. Acts of crime inflict lasting physical, emotional, and psychological wounds that take time and care to heal. President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the first Crime Victims' Rights Week on April 8, 1981. National Crime Victims' Rights Week has been commemorated annually for the last 30 years. From: SenatorWicker Views: 123 1 ratings Time: 05:16 More in News & Politics

In part, Wicker said: "Reversing years of precedent, the Administration is asserting that the executive branch now has the authority to decide when Congress is in session. "This presumptuous action by the President goes far beyond the limited powers he is granted by our Constitution. It is an affront to the democratic checks and balances established by our Founders and constitutes a gross violation of precedent set by those who have come before us." Wicker Says President Has Failed to Live Up to His Rhetoric WASHINGTON, DC -- US Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) today issued the following statement regarding the President's annual State of the Union Address. "The President has made a lot of promises over the past three years, but he has failed to live up to his rhetoric," said Wicker. "We need a different direction from the high unemployment and runaway spending that have marked the Obama economy. The House has passed 30 bills that would spur job creation, but the Democrat-controlled Senate refuses to bring them up for a vote. If the President is serious about getting our economy back on the right track, he should put pressure on Senators in his own party to pass these bills." Wicker recently pointed to some of the President's failed promises from previous addresses in this column. In it, he wrote, "Now that President Obama is in the fourth year of his term, Americans have had sufficient time to see the wide gap between his rhetoric and record." Wicker also highlighted the President's unfulfilled pledges to cut government spending and encourage job creation. The President's State of the Union Address is required by the United States Constitution in Article II, Section 3. The State of the Union was submitted in writing from 1810-1912 and first televised at night when Lyndon Johnson delivered his State of the Union on January 4, 1965. # # # wicker.senate.gov From: SenatorWicker Views: 80 1 ratings Time: 03:07 More in News & Politics

Wicker Urges Leader Reid to End Political Gamemanship and Extend Payroll Tax
WASHINGTON, DC -- Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) spoke on the Senate Floor Wednesday afternoon urging his colleagues to extend the payroll tax cut, offsetting it with spending reductions. Excerpt of Wicker's remarks: "Maybe after we get this week over with and we have had yet another week of gamesmanship, the Senate can get down to the business of passing a simple extension of the payroll rates in their current form and to offset that action with savings. There is an absolute majority in the Senate and in the House to do just that. In doing so, we can end three weeks of political theater with the Democrats trying to score points for 2012." Wicker Speaks on Senate Floor Regarding Russian Human Rights Abuses
US Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) spoke on the Senate Floor Tuesday afternoon urging President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to make human rights and rule of law in Russia a central part of US efforts to reset bilateral relations. Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer representing Russia's largest foreign portfolio investor, uncovered the biggest tax rebate fraud in Russian history. He was thrown in pre-trial detention where he was pressured and tortured by Russian officials to withdraw his testimony. Each time he refused, his conditions and health worsened, and he eventually died due to lack of medical care. Magnitsky's death has become a symbol of the injustice and corruption by the Russian government. In May 2011, Senator Wicker cosponsored the "Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act." The bill extends the application of visa and economic sanctions to officials in cases of gross human rights abuses. From: SenatorWicker Views: 112 1 ratings Time: 14:12 More in News & Politics
