Blacksmithing With Meg
[LESS INFO] 234 VIEWS | ADDED 20:00:00 02/25/11
In today's CRAFT Video I had the pleasure of blacksmithing with Alex Himmelbaum at Marsha Trattner's She-Weld studios in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
This was my very first time blacksmithing and Alex was an awesome teacher, keeping me informed and safe as we made this sweet paper towel holder.

It is really cool to be a part of making your own one-of-a-kind pieces like this to add to your home.
This is the forge, the source of heat for your metal. You have to be very careful with your hair, and should not wear loose articles of clothing near it. Even around the forge is so hot you have to give it a wide berth for safety.
This is the hammered effect. Each divot was created by hitting the piece with a hammer when it is still red-piping hot, fresh out the forge. Check out the video to learn how to blacksmith, and see me try my hand at it for the first time!

T-Shirt Mod: Boxy to Foxy
[LESS INFO] 205 VIEWS | ADDED 20:00:46 02/11/11
I have a bunch of great logo tee-shirts but they're cut for men and I don't like the way they fit, so today I'm going to show you how to mod your t-shirts into a flattering shape that you'll actually wear.
Subscribe to the CRAFT Podcast in iTunes , download the m4v video directly, or watch it on YouTube .
Check out the complete tutorial on Make: Projects . For this project you need:
* a boxy unisex tee that fits you in the collar
* a girlie tee that fits (your template)
* tailor's chalk
* pins
* scissors
* a serger (overlock machine)
First, iron your shirts and turn them inside-out. Line up the template at the shoulders and trace around it with tailor's chalk.
Pin along the new side seams, and cut off the sleeves at the new armhole. Run the new side seams through the serger.
Lay out the old sleeve under the template t-shirt and mark the new underarm and armhole. Serge the underarm, then cut the shoulder curve.
Flip the sleeve right side out and set it inside the armhole of the shirt. Pin and serge the edge, repeat on the other sleeve, and you're done!
You can also hem the bottom of the shirt if it's too long. [ Read More ] [ Comments ]

How-To: Dreamcatcher with Paper Feathers

In today's Craft video we make a dreamcatcher for our sweet Threadbanger Corinne Leigh . I love the aesthetic and look of Native American decor and want to start looking for textiles to add to our home. Dreamcatchers are a lovely nod to the culture and can be a really beautiful piece adorned with sacred objects like beads, charms and collected feathers. They are a symbol of unity and help weed out any nightmares. As Konrad J. Kaweczynski said, "Only good dreams would be allowed to filter through... Bad dreams would stay in the net, disappearing with the light of day."

You can interpret and alter these projects to be custom made to what you want. You can add more moss, stack the birch branches or use a ton of tea lights for effect. I saw the moss frame and a ton of other lovely ideas that could be spun into table decor ideas on Ruffled Blog . You can find table decor inspiration anywhere, but be sure you don't forget to include place cards. Here is my feather design that can be printed out on card stock paper and cut out to be a place card.

Make a Firefox Necklace
[LESS INFO] 204 VIEWS | ADDED 20:00:57 09/17/10
Make a silver Firefox pendant using some basic jewelry making tools and turn your favorite web browser into a fashion statement in this week's CRAFT Video. To get the foxy template, check out Tobi Leingruber's Foxbling on Thingiverse .
Subscribe to the CRAFT Podcast in iTunes , download the m4v video directly, or watch it on YouTube .
I used rubber cement to affix the template to a piece of 18ga. silver sheet, and used a small saw to cut out the shape on top of a jewelry maker's bench pin, which is that fork-shaped wooden surface you see in the video. Finish it up with files and a lot of sanding using a flex shaft and slotted mandrel. The same flex shaft can be fitted with any number of tools, like the tiny drill bit I used to drill the pendant's jumpring hole. I got most of the tools and supplies for this project from Rio Grande , who also buys back my scrap metal.
46% of CRAFT readers use Firefox, way higher than the worldwide usage share . Mozilla is an easy organization to get behind since they're all about great free and open source software that anyone can improve by developing add-ons like the StumbleUpon toolbar and Add-Art , an extension that replaces web ads with a curated art show.
I'd like to put these necklaces into production (and $upport Mozilla, natch), so if you're interested in staying informed on the project, email me or leave a comment below. [ Read More ] [ Comments ]

How-To: Bring Style to Your Dorm Room
[LESS INFO] 159 VIEWS | ADDED 20:00:21 09/03/10
Happy back to school! It's time to start sharpening your pencils and re-covering your books. Okay, I know, you're really charging your laptops and loading up your Kindle. Whatever it may be, some of you are heading off to college to live in ONE ROOM for the year. No worries! There are plenty of things you can do to personalize your space and make your dorm room reflect your individual style and taste.
Subscribe to the CRAFT Podcast in iTunes , download the m4v video directly, or watch it on YouTube .
Lighting: This is the industrial pendant light we made. It is perfect to hang by your bed for reading, writing, or crafting at night while your roommate sleeps. Customize yours to be the size, shape, and color you want to represent your individual style in your new dorm room. As mentioned in the video, you can drape some cool fabric over your bed, and hang the pendant light inside, giving you some privacy and a fun, fort-like nook.
* Please craft with caution always, but especially when working with electricity. Be sure to use a low-heat (either low wattage or CFL) bulb, and keep all flammable things away from the lamp. The fort should be created and used when you are there to make sure there is enough distance between the curtain and lamp.

Fiber for Felting

Shop proprietor Linda LaBelle does a bunch of outreach to traditional fiber arts practitioners around the world, and is preparing for an exciting trip to Oaxaca, Mexico:
> Last year many of you helped to fund my trip to Rwanda where I had the privilege of working with 10 genocide widows teaching them natural dyeing and weaving. On September 3rd, 2010 I will be making another trip, this time to Oaxaca, Mexico.
I will be working with a group of native weavers, most work on back strap looms, teaching them a technique called Ikat. This is a method of tying off the warp yarns prior to dyeing to create a pattern. I will also be teaching them how to make a chemical indigo vat using natural Oaxacan Indigo. There are areas where the climate is not appropriate for a natural ferment indigo vat. Learning this skill will enable them to dye with indigo whenever they wish.
I will spend three days working with the weavers at the museum. The following week I will have the opportunity to visit each weaver in his or her village. I will get to see the work in progress, photograph and interview the weavers. At the end of the week the weavers will return to the museum where we will conduct a show & tell/Q%A.
Ikat has a history in Mexico, although it seems to now be a lost technique. This will be a new skill for the weavers and the hope being that they will be able to create new and beautiful textiles that can compete in today's marketplace thus bringing in more income. In turn these weavers will then be able to pass their new skills on to their fellow weavers.
You can support Linda by making a tax-deductible donation .
