Mark Smith Says Goodbye To BBA- Exit Interview
Mark Smith gives us his final thoughts on his experiences with the Better Beer Authority. He was a reviewer with us for about two years and definitely brought a lot to the table. Even though he started the show with much more craft beer experience than the rest of us, it was still fun to watch his palette change. He started out as a stout/porter lover, but learned to open his heart to some of the country's great hoppy beers as well. Based on some of the comments our viewers have left, I know he will be missed. The show would not have been the same without him, his creativity and his love for finding great craft beers. Cheers! Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine Vertical Tasting (2009-2012)
As part of Mark Smith's final night with the Better Beer Authority, he wanted to do a vertical tasting of Sierra Nevada's Bigfoot Barleywine-style Ale. Mark had the 2009. Mitch Wilson brought the 2010 and I brought 2011 and 2012. It was a very fun night with some interesting results. I'm James Knott and this is your Better Beer Authority. Today we are doing something we've never done before on the show - a vertical tasting. Sierra Nevada had released Big Foot Barley Wine Style Ale 27 times - which makes it an senior citizen in the growing American Craft Beer Scene. We have 4 different years available to us 2012, 2011, 2008 and 2006 and we are going to talk about how the beer changes over time. Bigfoot is a barley wine style ale. Barley wines are not wines at all. They have wine-like alcohol levels and sometimes exhibit a few wine-like characteristics. This barley wine comes in at 9.6% ABV and 90 IBUs. Some people think it is a very hoppy version of the style. This is a good beer for cellaring and should be enjoyed out of a snifter." Founders Brewing Co. - Interview Mike Stevens & Dave Engbers
Founders Brewing Company was the #2 rated brewery in the world by ratebeer.com for 2012. However, Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers weren't always at the top of the food chain. At one point, they were on the verge of bankruptcy. They took one last stab at success and it's a good thing that they did because they've been brewing tons of award-winning beers and growing at an astronomical rate on the fuel of their great recipes. Hear directly from the founders of Founders and find out why this was one of the most interviews I've ever conducted. Sam Calagione, the founder of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, broke some news on the Randall Jr. - BUT, he wasn't supposed to. So, we agreed to cut it out of the original interview and hold onto it until after their marketing department was ready to talk about it. The Columbus Winter Beerfest 2012 was held January 14th at the Columbus Convention Center. The Better Beer Authority crew packed up the gear and headed to the Columbus Convention Center. This year it was held in Convention Hall D -- a much larger room than they've had in the past. And it's a good thing because they had a much larger crowd -- over 7000 people. Unlike the past Beerfest events, this year's beerfest was one night only instead of two. Craig Johnson, the organizer of the event, said that a scheduling conflict at the convention center was the reason that this year's beerfest was held on a single night. This year's festival was an absolute blast. There were over 260 different beers to try and many of the local brewers were in attendance. Sam Calagione founded Dogfish Head in 1995 in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Since that time, Dogfish Head has grown to be one of the largest and most cutting edge breweries in the country. Have they gotten too big? Are they overrated? The Better Beer Authority took their first-ever road trip to Delaware and hunted down the face of the company. Listen to Sam Calagione and decide for yourself. Dogfish Head welcomed us with open arms and gave us a behind-the-scenes look at their operations - we happened to be their when they were bottling 120 Minute IPA! Today we are drinking Infinium, which is a collaboration between Samuel Adams and Germany's Weihenstephan - the world's oldest brewery. This champagne like beer is made under the restrictions of reiheitsgebot - which means they use only the four basic ingredients in beer - barley, hops, water and yeast. The brewers describe it as "light and dry yet complex, with a sparkling effervescence." It is dry-hopped with Bavarian Noble hops to add a light citrus flavor. It is 10.3% ABV and don't expect a lot of bitterness because it only has 10 IBUs. They use Samuel Adams ale yeast and bottle condition it with a Belgian yeast strain. There are 278 calories in a 12 oz serving. Q%A Infinium gets a (???) on the BBA scale. Have you had this beer? Is is a special occasion beer for you? Let us know in the comment section. Foster's Lager- Beer Review
CORRECTION: Foster's is not 5.5 percent ABV as stated in the video. It looks like it's somewhere between 4.9% and 5.2%. In other countries, the ABV can vary as well. Sorry for the error. "Foster's - Australian For Beer" is a pretty famous slogan here in the United States. Foster's has embraced every Australian stereotype and compiled it into a very clever marketing campaign. This is an adjunct lager, much like Budweiser, but how does the flavor stack up? Is it a better beer or just a good excuse to speak with a bad Australian accent? Foster's is an adjunct lager with 5.5% alcohol by volume. It is available in over 150 countries and is the largest selling Australian beer brand in the world. It has become famous in America for it's popular "Foster's --Australian for Beer" slogan, but really isn't very popular in Australia at all.
