What do you do when you say something foolish just to excite your base (and loosen their wallets) but it's caught on tape so what you said gets you in even more trouble in what was once a very "red district" that has recently become much bluer through redistricting? Well, if you're Republican Mike Coffman you make yourself look even more ridiculous.
via 9News in Denver : >
DENVER - Rep. Mike Coffman (R-Colorado) repeatedly answered with a one-line talking point when asked by 9NEWS about his recent comments questioning President Barack Obama's birthplace and whether he's really an American at heart.
...
Coffman reiterated that he misspoke and apologized, but would not elaborate. Coffman offered the same one-line explanation to every question asked, including when he was asked if he would answer any question with a different response.
...
"I don't know whether Barack Obama was born in the United States of America. I don't know that," Coffman told donors. "But I do know this, that in his heart, he's not an American. He's just not an American."
Informed that the comments were recorded, the Coffman campaign issued a written statement.
"I misspoke and I apologize. I have confidence in President Obama's citizenship and legitimacy as President of the United States," the statement read. "I don't believe the President shares my belief in American Exceptionalism. His policies reflect a philosophy that America is but one nation among many equals," the statement read. "As a Marine, I believe America is unique and based on a core set of principles that make it superior to other nations."
Coffman knows he stepped in it with his idiotic remarks and is now just trying to lay low till this blows over. The lingering stink will stay with him though through the election.
If you live in Colorado's 6th district you do have a far better choice in Joe Miklosi .
Partial transcript below. >
KYLE CLARK: Let me ask you, after your comments about the President, do you feel voters are owed a better explanation than just, I misspoke?
REP. COFFMAN: I think that... Umm... I stand by my statement that I misspoke and I apologize.
KYLE CLARK: OK. And who were you apologizing to?
REP. COFFMAN: You know, I stand by my statement that I misspoke and I apologize.
KYLE CLARK: I apologize, we talk to you all the time, you're a very forthcoming guy. Who's telling you not to talk and to handle it like this?
REP. COFFMAN: I stand by my statement, that I wrote, that you have, and I misspoke and I apologize.
KYLE CLARK: Was it that you thought it would go over well in Elbert County where folks are very conservative and you'd never say something like that in the suburbs?
REP. COFFMAN: I stand by my statement that I misspoke and I apologize.
KYLE CLARK: Is there anything I can ask you that you'll answer differently?
REP. COFFMAN: You know, I stand by my statement that I misspoke and I apologize.
KYLE CLARK: Thank you, congressman.
REP. COFFMAN: Thank you.

The Bain of Our Existence
[LESS INFO] 8 VIEWS | ADDED 01:00:28 05/24/12
I love this Bain debate. It is exactly the kind of debate about the nature of business and job creation we need to be having in this campaign. The Republicans, along with pro-Wall Street Democrats, are squealing like stuck pigs about the Obama campaign “attacking free enterprise” because they want to change the subject fast. They are saying to themselves: please, let’s talk about anything else. Deficits would be their first choice, but anything would be preferable. Maybe we’ll see them start talking about contraceptives and how people shouldn’t have sex again just to change the subject. Because this debate goes straight to the heart of what kind of economy we should be trying to build in this country.
This is isn’t about being for or against free enterprise. This is about how the economy should work better for everyone in it, not just the top 1 percent. The Republicans -- and Democrats like Cory Booker and Harold Ford, who both have raised millions of dollars in Wall Street money ( including money from Bain ) for their campaigns -- say that it is great when financial corporations like Bain make money by loading up the companies they buy with debt, taking all the tax write-offs the law allows, and then walking away with tons of money whatever happens to the original company. In fact, the companies Bain bought frequently went bankrupt, and Bain usually profited when those companies did go belly-up because of tax write-offs and sucking the companies’ assets dry. But in this line of reasoning, it’s all good, because capitalism should be unrestrained and some people got very rich.
What Obama and other Democrats are arguing is that our government should be on the side of the businesses that create not just wealth for a few at the top, but jobs and incomes for a lot of people. That is why Obama made the incredibly gutsy move to save the American auto industry, a policy that saved 1.45 million jobs in the short run, and kept desperately needed manufacturing jobs in this country for years to come. It is why Obama has made big investments in the budget for Small Business Administration jobs. It is why investments have been made in clean energy jobs of the future. It is why the U.S. Department of Agriculture has emphasized rural economic development and small business development in areas where jobs and incomes are desperately needed.
Democratic policies are in fact far more pro-business than policies like the Romney-Ryan budget, which independent studies estimate would cost the nation more than 4 million jobs in the next two years. That’s a lot of business customers who no longer have money to spend.
The Republican attack machine (helped by Democrats like Booker and Ford who have been feeding at the Wall Street trough for their entire careers) wants to intimidate the Obama campaign by making the claim that any attack on greedy business practices like the ones Romney perfected at Bain is an attack on all business and the market. It’s the same kind of argument Republicans make when they complain about class warfare politics when Democrats suggest that millionaires ought to pay a little more in taxes. It is an utterly soulless, amoral argument. But this is a fight Democrats can and will win if we make our case, because I think most people understand that there are ethical and unethical business practices. And they get that there is a difference between making money by manipulating the tax code and squeezing all the value out of businesses before throwing them away, and making money by making and selling good products that people want to buy. Biden laid this case out beautifully in a speech in Youngstown:
And the President got it right when he said “when you are President, as opposed to the head of a private equity firm, then your job is not simply to maximize profits. Your job is to figure out how everybody in the country has a fair shot.”
This debate about Bain Capital is one we need to have. What kind of business activity, and what kind of government policy, is better for America? Republicans, you better batten down the hatches, because we are going to have this debate. Whiny Wall Street Democrats, get over it, this is a fight we are taking on. This is a make or break moment for America’s middle class, and we aren’t going to let Republican bullies and Wall Street Democrat whiners from making Bain the bain of Romney’s existence.

Well, Mayor Booker had a chance to make it right on Maddow last night, and he failed miserably. Starting with, >
BOOKER: My outrage, and really my frustration, was about the cynical, negative campaigning, the manipulating of the truth .
Really, Mayor? Because the Obama campaign's claims about Bain are true . So what was "cynical" and "manipulative" about it?
And then it got worse. >
BOOKER: For anybody that knows me, and that really knows my career, I've been an Independent Democrat for a long time , standing up on issues. And actually have been comfortable to say I disagree with the president...
God, this guy is totally clueless.
Let me give you some free advice, Mayor. Following in Joe Lieberman's footsteps is not a good career move in Democratic politics.
Just go away already.

Perino: White House Trashing 'Friends' Cory Booker and Campbell Brown
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 01:00:11 05/22/12
Former Bush spokeswoman Dana Perino says that President Barack Obama's White House has been dismissing advice from their "friends" like Newark Mayor Corey Booker, who called an Obama ad "nauseating," and Campbell Brown, who wrote that that the president was "condescending" toward women.
Appearing on NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday, Booker had said that the Obama campaign should stop criticizing presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney for job losses caused by Bain Capital, a firm that he founded. The Newark mayor later released a YouTube video walking back his remarks.
“Cory Booker is a friend of the White House,” Perino told Fox News host Gretchen Carlson on Monday. “In some ways, your friends give you the best advice. They could have taken that yesterday as some friendly advice. A brush-back pitch to let them know that what he is hearing across the country—what Cory Booker is hearing is that this isn’t working."
Carlson pointed out that "there are a lot of Democrats that don't agree with the tactic that this administration is using because all it does is promote class warfare."
Fox News host Clayton Morris asked Perino if it was "going to be a problem for the administration" that former CNN host Campbell Brown, the wife of a Romney adviser, had written a New York Times op-ed accusing the president of "condescending" to women.
"Yesterday, the White House gets these two broadsides and instead of saying, 'That's good advice. Let us take some time to think about that and come back out and have a strong commencement address that President Obama is going to give today.' Instead they basically trashed two of their friends," Perino explained. "It looks like they have nothing else to go on."

Mike Coffman (R-CO) Questions Obama's Citizenship, Says He's 'Not an American'
[LESS INFO] 31 VIEWS | ADDED 21:00:17 05/17/12
Oh, look. Another Congressional Republican saying something crazy and offensive. >
" I don't know whether Barack Obama was born in the United States of America. I don't know that," Coffman said. " But I do know this, that in his heart, he's not an American. He's just not an American. "
But MoveOn once compared Bush to Hitler! Michael Moore! Both sides are equally extreme!
Here's the problem. Republican rhetoric has gone so over the bend over the past four years that no one will even notice. Coffman apologized, but one wonders -- why? This stuff began even before Obama got in the White House -- with Paul Broun (R-GA) comparing Obama to Hitler . Was he censured? Not at all.
This is why, four years later, Allen West (R-FL) can call half of the Democrats in the House "Communists" and there's hardly so much as a peep.
And since there's no rebuke, and no price to pay, Republican voters will keep lapping up this poison like candy -- and further down the drain we all go.

Stand Your Ground? Only If You're White and Male
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 21:00:01 05/12/12
(h/t Patriot Actor)
I have a fundamental problem with the Stand Your Ground laws popping up around the country --including a long-standing version already in place in my home state of California --which is that it essentially codifies vigilantism in the most dangerous of possible ways, resulting in what police organizations warned would be legalized hate crimes .
Unfortunately, you have the NRA and its ALEC compatriots wrapping SYG laws with the sacrosanct mantle of the Second Amendment so that any kind of nuanced, intellectually honest discussion is impossible. However, what makes these bills so heinous is how inconsistently they're applied. For someone like George Zimmerman, he simply invokes it in a police interview and he's released without an investigation even though he's killed an unarmed boy simply walking down the street. For someone like Marissa Alexander--who had direct knowledge of past acts of violence and a threat against her life by the man she shot a warning shot at-- it's dismissed out of hand . >
Saying he had no discretion under state law, a judge sentenced a Jacksonville, Florida, woman to 20 years in prison Friday for firing a warning shot in an effort to scare off her abusive husband. Marissa Alexander unsuccessfully tried to use Florida's controversial "stand your ground" law to derail the prosecution, but a jury in March convicted her of aggravated assault after just 12 minutes of deliberation.[..]
After the sentencing, Rep. Corrine Brown confronted State Attorney Angela Corey in the hallway, accusing her of being overzealous, according to video from CNN affiliate WJXT .
"There is no justification for 20 years," Brown told Corey during an exchange frequently interrupted by onlookers. "All the community was asking for was mercy and justice," she said.
[..]Corey said the case deserved to be prosecuted because Alexander fired in the direction of a room where two children were standing.
I hate this law and all that it implies. But Marissa Alexander's choice to return into the house because not only were her children inside but she had no way to leave. She had a legitimate reason to feel reasonably threatened. Her husband had a criminal record of spousal abuse, had threatened to kill her and yet it is she who has to be taken away from her children for a twenty year sentence for aggravated assault? What kind of justice is that?

Anderson Cooper (Gently) Smacks Down Rush Limbaugh
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 19:00:04 05/04/12
I probably shouldn't have enjoyed this as much as I did, but damn if I didn't laugh out loud at Anderson Cooper's mild-mannered smackdown of Rush Limbaugh's odd citing of Anderson Cooper and his ratings on CNN. I don't listen to Rush, so I don't know if discussing the ratings of the cable news channels or gossip columns are a regular part of his show or if he just needed to needle Cooper a little bit for some perceived slight.
Frankly, the subtext of Rush's comments ("Cooper's always at the gym or that bar") made it a little creepy. We know what he's implying about Anderson Cooper, although really, does a man who takes a jumbo bottle of Viagra on a fraudulent prescription on a Dominican Republic "golf holiday" really want to go there? But Anderson Cooper, classy to the end, reminds Rush that there's nothing wrong with trying to keep physically fit . >
I will grant the following point, though, and I agree that this is some fantastically juicy gossip. So listen close. Stop the presses. I do go to the gym. I’m concerned about heart disease. I’ve raised money to fight heart disease. My dad died of it. And, yeah, I try to take care of myself. Mr. Limbaugh, I can only hope that you are taking care of yourself as well. You might try the gym from time to time.
Ooh...I don't care how placid the delivery, that one left a mark. I'm sure that Rush will have another volley soon.

Scott Brown’s Tax Blunder
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 19:00:52 04/28/12
Earlier this week, Sen. Scott Brown made a consequential and costly decision for his campaign: to release his recent tax returns and to challenge Elizabeth Warren to do the same.
Talk about a major blunder.
First, it turns out Brown has a haircut problem. The Boston Herald reported that last year, Brown took a deduction of $1401 for hair, make up and grooming. Wow. This is something that will haunt Brown for the remainder of his campaign. Voters don’t much like career politicians who claim to be earnest everymen while spending so much money on their vanity and grooming.
Second, it turns out that Scott Brown and his wife made $2.5 million over the past six years , far more than the Brown campaign and the Massachusetts Republican Party have let on in all their vitriolic and over the top advertisements attacking Warren’s own income. What’s more, Brown’s income has skyrocketed since he entered public service — news that has caught the eye of pretty much every Massachusetts paper.
Earlier this year, Brown claimed his income was “not a heck of a lot. I mean, you know, I don’t make a heck of a lot.” He will have a tough time explaining that given the latest revelations about his income and the fact that he has a healthy place in the top 1 percent of American earners.
Brown’s latest problems were put on display with a new Web ad the Massachusetts Democratic Party posted early this morning, highlighting the enormous, $675 price tag for his famous barn jacket , the six properties he owns, and his newfound “A-list” stature in the Washington social circuit.
Brown is likely to find it difficult to put this toothpaste back in the tube.
