Micro-Land Ownership in India: Progress Report
In 2007, Landesa committed to develop an effective, replicable model to engage communities and government officials in the securing of land rights for the landless in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha in India. It is estimated that there are 15 million poor and landless families in rural India. Landesa aims to provide the foundation upon which these families can build to secure shelter, proper nutrition, education, healthcare, and access to credit. To do this, Landesa partnered with national and state governments in India in the development of micro-plots, which allow families to grow fruits and vegetables to feed themselves and sell excess produce, while still maintaining space on the plot for a micro-business. Micro-plots are also small enough that even a government with constrained finances can afford to pay the market price to purchase and distribute enough land to provide for many of the poor.
