Naboisho Community Conservancy, Masai Mara, Kenya: Progress Report
In 2011, Basecamp committed to developing and launching the Mara Naboisho Community Conservancy (MNCC). This is a multi-faceted sustainable land-management project that empowers local Maasai landowners to manage and conserve their land for long-term wildlife and ecosystem protection, ensures sustainable tourism development, and strengthens the local community in Masai Mara, Kenya. Basecamp will work with 500 landowners to create a management company that conserves wildlife on 50000 acres of prime land while providing Maasai landowners with a sustainable income through the leasing of the land to sustainable tourism operators. This commitment will provide 800 jobs to Maasai, help to ensure that future tourism development in the area (150 tourist beds) is sustainable and green, and provide local community services through the development of five green villages that provide clean water, renewable energy, healthcare and education to local Maasai communities. Basecamp also committed to training 20 women as solar engineers. This unique model is applicable in most parts of Kenya and Eastern and Southern Africa, where a mega-fauna is available on private or community owned land.
