Local coverage of civic events was a justification for allocating spectrum to the broadcast industry, says Full Channel, Incorporated’s Levi Maaia. In this interview filmed at the 2011 Independent Show. Maaia suggests that broadcasters are not meeting this obligation and provides an example of how the broadcasters fell short in his area. He explains how Full Channel, a Rhode Island-based provider of broadband, telephony and video services, provided coverage of a historic local event that, on short notice, local broadcasters decided not to cover. A family owned, independent broadband provider, Full Channel is the only Rhode Island operator that continues to produce local content, instead of opting into a state-run plan, like the other cable operators in the state. By investing in the resources necessary for creating local content, Full Channel was ready to capture the memories of the nation’s oldest Independence Day parade.
