Nigel Barker's Beauty Equation World Book Tour 2010
[LESS INFO] 3 VIEWS | ADDED 12:17:33 10/29/10
Wow! So writing the Beauty Equation was a labor of love but the actual tour was if possible even more magical, if not thoroughly exhausting! Starting out in my home in NYC, we hit the road running. The following weeks took us all over the country on 15 stops not to mention an additional 7 city stop in Europe, namely my country of birth, England with a two day stint in Amsterdam. Everywhere we were met by happy throngs of Beauty Equation readers, many of which were deep into the book by the time we caught up with them. I will never forget one young girl at the beginning of the US tour, ; who came running up giving me a big squeeze and simultaneously bursting into tears. She had a hair lip and told me that she had never felt beautiful, since reading the book she was now finding herself and had grown in confidence. Not only did she know she could be beautiful but others certainly did - Her first boyfriend waved at me sheepishly from the sidelines... at that point I knew that the book was serving it's purpose, to encourage, inspire and motivate. I truly believe we all have the power to be beautiful, we just need the humility to summon it.The tour took a nostalgic turn in England, as I visited my old high school in Blandford Forum, Dorset. I discussed the purposefulness of art and photography in the world today, illustrating my point with the ability to spot light serious world issues with imagery that can change hearts and minds. Amsterdam and Toronto were also enormously fun. They kept me on my toes by filling the long days with dozens of TV, radio and press interviews. An average day on the tour would start at 4 AM when Ali, my personal assistant, and I would head off to the local airport to catch a 6 AM flight to wherever, arriving normally at around 11ish, diving straight into press or morning TV and radio chat rooms. We would do a book talk followed by a book signing in the late afternoon, snacking when and where we could, wrapping most nights at about 10 PM, only to start the whole thing again the following morn! I lost 10 lbs on the trip which is something I am happily eating back on again...... The hardest part of course was being away from Crissy, Jack and Jasmine but they have been and continue to be my rock, stone and pebbles for which I live for.Oh and by the way the tour's not over - I am heading to Grand Rapids Michigan on the 10th of November, then we have a few events in NYC in December followed by a book signing at Page & Palette in Fairhope AL on the 23rd of December. In 2011 we could be coming to a bookstore, school or college near you. Let us know if you'd like us to come and I'll do all I can to make it happen. Oh and we are planning an Asian trip to Hong Kong, Manila, Singapore, Shanghai and Seoul late Spring...... stay tuned and keep posting your stories and questions on BE One

A Sealed Fate?
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 07:32:11 03/11/10
Is a documentary film directed and produced by Nigel Barker for the Humane Society Of The United States. It lets you take an inside look at the HSUS and their efforts to document the seal hunt in Canada. The film begins with the birth of these beautiful white coats and follows them through their short life cycle for two weeks when the hunt begins. Although there is some graphic imagery, the majority of the hunt footage is tastefully and artfully shot for maximum effect with minimum gore. Only the last 8 minutes of this 45 minute feature contain any graphic shots. This film allows us to see the seals in their stunning natural habitat and hopefully lay the foundations for a promisingly lucrative eco-tourism opportunity.

Haiti Hunger And Hope
[LESS INFO] 7 VIEWS | ADDED 07:56:50 10/29/09
As the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, Haiti has been troubled for many years with corruption at all levels, a serious drug problem, poverty that affects 95 percent of the population and hunger being a constant issue. In fact, between the time I had my first meeting with Unik, Edeyo’s founder, and the time we planned to leave on our trip to Haiti, riots broke out in Port Au Prince over massive food shortages. The rioters attacked the Presidential Palace, driving a garbage truck through the front gates. The US Embassy temporarily closed warning us not to go to Haiti and to postpone our trip. But, I am glad we went. Haiti has a rich and colorful history made up of a people determined to never give up. Despite the horrors we witnessed and the daily tragedies that Haitians face, one thing resonated with the people I met: hope.In my opinion, Haitians are hungry for change.Education can provide the foundation on which to build a new and better future. This film is a glimpse at the disenfranchised and of the opportunity that existsfor change when we stand together.

Generation Free

Nigel Barker is a Celebrity Ambassador for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. This film is inspired by the Foundation’s “Join The Moment” initiative to create a generation free of HIV. To get involved with Nigel Barker and the Foundation, and to Join The Moment to create a generation free of HIV, visit www.pedaids.org or call 202-296-9165. A generation free of HIV -- is it just a dream or could it be reality? Although we’ve virtually eliminated pediatric HIV/AIDS in the developed world, more than 1,000 children worldwide are still infected with HIV each day. The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is working on the ground in 17 countries to change this. In Generation Free, photographer and filmmaker Nigel Barker takes an up-close look at the Foundation’s work in Tanzania, where Foundation-supported programs have achieved outstanding success in preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV and providing care and treatment to children and families living with HIV. It is a story of great hope and courage, showcasing the importance of fighting HIV stigma and discrimination, the struggle to reach more children and mothers in need, and the Foundation’s successful advocacy in the U.S. and beyond. Generation Free captures this new moment for action -- a time to finish the work Elizabeth Glaser started and eliminate pediatric AIDS around the world.
