Hello and welcome back! Once again, the Captain David Blye and I are back at it for another year. We'll be looking to set a new standard for podcast excellence on this show. This week we discussed our two favourite topics; hockey and politics. Are the Habs a federalist tool and if so, who cares? How do we feel about Carey Price? Should government money go to building hockey arenas? Was Ilya Kovalchuk unfairly shafted by the league or was the NHL's move long overdue? We answer these questions and a whole lot more. Enjoy! Shakespeare, Goldman Sachs, deficits, housing bubbles, affirmative action and more. Michael Ignatieff was in Stratford Sunday, July 25th as part of his national tour. I got the chance to interview Iggy before he arrived in Stratford over the phone and again during a scrum in the Festival City's downtown core. I was allotted five minutes for the phone interview by his media handler but kept him on for fifteen minutes. The part where I ask him about the influence of Goldman Sachs on the Bank of Canada is my favourite part. Enjoy! Ethan Rabidoux

Wilkinson Rabidoux Hst

This is an interview I conducted with Perth-Wellington Liberal MPP John Wilkinson. He is also Ontario's Minister of Revenue. Ontario and British Columbia harmonized their Provincial Sales Tax with the federal Goods and Services Tax on July 1st. This is a move I support for a number of reasons. However, the tax has been sold to Ontarians using very disingenous rhetoric. The McGuinty Government has even suggested this would create 591,000 jobs over ten years. There's a lot in this interview but my favourite part happens between 4:52 and 6:37. I asked John about this claim and pointed out that, if true, it would completely eradicate unemployment in Ontario. He goes on to say that this will be the case and why. If you don't believe me, listen to the interview. According to the government, the HST along with the other tax changes will lead to full employment in Ontario. Given that this has never been achieved in history, it's reasonable to assume that this is a slightly inflated claim. Give the interview a listen and learn. Ethan Rabidoux

Ladies and Gentlemen, This is it for the 2009-2010 season. The Captain David Blye and I will be back in about four weeks to discuss the draft, free agency, the NHL awards and so on. We will tie up the season with a nice bow at that time. This is the last episode where we take a look at events of this season. We devote a long first period to the Stanley Cup final and the victorious Chicago Blackhawks. Period two is given to a discussion about whether the Canadian anthem should be played at NHL playoff games even if there isn't a Canadian team present. There was a movement calling for this. Dave and I lay the smackdown on it. The third and final period asked the question, "Does the General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens need to be bilingual?" That's all I'm going to tell you about that. Give it a listen. Enjoy! We'll see you in about four weeks for the final episode. Cheers! The Rabbi Ethan Rabidoux

When The Devil Drives

Ted Payne is something else. This 84 year old Stratford resident has done pretty much everything in life and shows no sign of slowing down. He's a veteran of World War II, a painter and an author among many other things. He was born in Britain and his father was a Veteran of World War I. The experiences in the trenches haunted Ted's father for the rest of his life. In part, his father's experiences during and after the war play a big role in Ted's first work of fiction entitled "When The Devil Drives." It was launched in Stratford on Saturday, June 5th to a packed house at Fanfare Books. Ted Payne has plans to write even more going forward. You can learn all about Ted, his publisher and his novel by listening to this audio piece I've put together from the book launch. Enjoy! Ethan Rabidoux

The Silenced Scream

Hello everyone, Every few years, free speech is challenged and challenged hard on university campuses in Canada. I assume this is true elsewhere. Nowhere is censorship more rampant than the abortion debate. Pro-life clubs are held to extreme double standards or are simply told that their views are unwelcome. It's happened time after time and it will happen again. The vast majority of universities are now done for the summer. This issue will have quieted down but it will come back. It always does. Why is this the one issue that can't be discussed rationally? I put together this radio documentary during the winter of 2008. It documented the struggle of the two pro-life groups at the University of Western Ontario to get an event sanctioned and how their experiece compared to elsewhere. My documentary was reproduced by the National Film Board of Canada. It can also be listened to hear: http://citizenshift.org/silenced-scream. Unfortunately, this documentary will remain timeless as long as ideologues at university campuses feel some issues are off limits to public debate and discussion. They're dead wrong. No idea is beyond the realm of free speech and I'm not going to let them decide what can and cannot be discussed. I hope you'll join me even if you vehement disagree with the pro-life position. Cheers. Ethan Rabidoux

Hello Hockey Fans, The Captain and I moved up this week's podcast due to scheduling conflicts. Not as much has happened between episodes as we would like. Regardless, you'll still enjoy today's show. We talk about the West and the East in the first and second periods. The NHL playoffs are well underway. We take a look at what has happened so far and where we think these series are headed. Finally, we devote our third period to Ted Lindsay. A great hockey player and a great man. We talk about his accomplishments and his most recent honour from the Players Association he helped start. It's one more accolade for a man who so richly deserves it. All of this and more. Enjoy! The Rabbi Ethan Rabidoux

Hello everyone, A little over one year ago I made a short documentary about David McLauchlin. He was training hard to compete in last year's Festival City Classic Bodybuilding Competition in Stratford. This year's competition happens today. I'll be covering it for my radio station. I've uploaded the documentary for your enjoyment. It first appeared as part of a longer show I help produce with three of my radio classmates. It was about health and the things people do to stay in shape. You can listen to the whole episode here; http://www.rabble.ca/podcasts/shows/reason/2009/04/reason-episode-6 Enjoy! Ethan Rabidoux

Periods two and three are devoted to playoff predictions. We start with the Eastern Conference then move West. Give it a listen. Feel free to disagree. I won't tell you what we said. Stratford At Heart The House Of Blessing
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 01:32:48 04/13/10
Hello everyone, I had to dig into my archive for this documentary. It's one of the first ones I ever did and you'll notice that almost immediately. My later work was more polished. However, I've always loved this story I was able to tell because the story itself is so incredible and humbling. I've known Norm and Florence Kehl for more than ten years. They are two of the kindest, most generous human beings I have ever met. My hometown of Stratford, Ontario would be lost without them. The Kehls have a deep faith in God. This faith drove them to open the House of Blessing back in 1982. They made huge personal sacrifices to bring this food bank/counselling service/women's shelter to the forgotten in our community. Their story is incredible. It's one of service, heartbreak and triumph. I hope you're as moved by it as I was when I first met these two wonderful people. Cheers! Ethan Rabidoux
