Whilst half our Year 7 went off to Northumberland, we left-behinds had an activity week so we made a movie…On Monday, we went to see Star Trek at the cinema.On our return, we: planned, scripted and photo storyboarded, made baseball caps and “built” the captain’s bridge, filmed, performed, improvised, rushed around a lot, edited, made trailers, posters and stickers… Creativity across the curriculum? I reckon we at least touched base in: English, Art, Music, DT, PSHE, Maths and of course ICT. Worst job? Collecting shopping trolleys in a downpour. Moral? Always double-check your equipment – in the event, the external mike we used with our new camcorder let us down and we had to record all the sound as voiceover…

Made with Class 3JR Superstars at St Michael's Primary, as part of the excellent ArC project with firstsite and CSN consultancy. ArC looks at creative ways of teaching citizenship by developing projects with artists working alongside primary classes in Colchester. Our theme was Working Together and teams of children created masks, storyboards and scripts. The advantage of working with masks is that everyone who wants gets to be a performer. The film is based on the Grimms' tale "The Bremen Town Musicians". In our version a disparate team of animals decide to escape from Colchester Zoo to join the army...I began to wonder if we would have time to do the filming as the masks took so long - but they were wrth the waiting I think.
