Motherboard Alexei Shulgin & The Art Of No Brain Pt 1
[LESS INFO] 23 VIEWS | ADDED 22:47:47 06/01/09
WATCH PART TWO ON VBS TV http://www.vbs./video.php?id=24669409001 In this edition of Motherboard, VBS tours Electroboutique, the electronics production company cum roving cyber-art kiosk of Russia's leading non-pornographic artist, Alexei Shulgin. Shulgin hasn't been hip to the internet from its very beginning, but he's definitely been onboard since at least the Compuserve days. In the early 90s, he was one of the first artsy types to adopt the then-brand-new World Wide Web as a medium, creating web pages filled with maddening arrays of random-seeming pictures and text blocks and hidden links to games and secret files and similarly weird and frustrating link pages, as well as helping curate the work of his net-art contemporaries. Shulgin was also the organizer of the world's first international exhibition of people's computer desktops. These days his work has shifted slightly offline and into creating weird electronic fantasy objects such as the Super-IBR Real Virtuality goggles, which you wear to help make your actual-reality look like crappy VR. Shulgin also claims to have formed the world's first cyberpunk rock act when he started his MIDI cover band 386DX in 1998. See more exclusive content at Dell Lounge!

Soft Focus With Dead Kennedys' Jello Biafram Pt 1
[LESS INFO] 6 VIEWS | ADDED 17:00:51 05/27/09
WATCH THE REST OF THE SOFT FOCUS WITH JELLO - http://www.vbs.tv/video.php?id=24051392001 ----- In this first-ever San Franciscan edition of Soft Focus, Ian sits down with Jello Biafra: Dead Kennedys frontman, campus lecture circuit mainstay, and crucial third member of punk's Triumverate of Tremolos (alongside the B52s' Fred Schneider and the recently deceased Lux Interior(RIP)). While most other participants in what gets labeled punk these days are willing to touch their ass to their forehead in order to please corporate sponsors or weasel their way onto Elimidate, we're constantly psyched to see Jello stick with the principles and obnoxiousness which made us etch the DK logo into every piece of exposed wood our 13-year-old hands came across. Even when that means shitting on our advertisers.

Watch Part 2 on VBS.TV http://www.vbs.tv/video.php?id=23347144001 In the 1950s, Brazil decided it would be a perfectly reasonable idea to move the capital to the center of the country's interior plateau (read: nowhere). To facilitate this sensible endeavor they enlisted Oscar Niemeyer - an ardent communist and proponent of modern architecture who, alongside his buddy Le Corbusier, had co-designed the UN building in New York - to build a crazy spacepod city in the middle of the planalto. WATCH MOTHERBOARD - CURTIS ROADS ON VBS.TV http://www.vbs.tv/video.php?id=22660968001 There are two divergent streams in 20th century electronic music: The one most people are familiar with starts out with goofballs like Jean-Jacques Perrey and Vangelis noodling around on synthesizers and eventually devolves into Kaja Googoo. Curtis Roads is part of the other path, the one that follows insane geniuses like Stockhausen and Morton Subotnik and uses whatever-period-it-happens-to-be's state-of-the-art computer technology to produce compositions that completely defy conventional music logic and sometimes sound more like a freaked-out ATM than tunes you put on and listen to. WATCH THE REST OF THE SERIES ON: www.vbs.tv/motherboard The world of competitive gaming is hardly a recent phenomenon. From the minute Donkey Kong stomped apart his first ladder, there have been hordes of individuals (most of the them male) clambering over one another for alpha dog status; using theoretical mathematics to game the system, disputing the authenticity of their nemeses high-score videos, and generally taking video games about a million times more seriously than most of us considered possible. Walter Day has spent the last three decades enabling this insane behavior. In 1981 he opened Twin Galaxies, a video arcade in small-town Iowa that morphed overnight into the center of the gaming universe and the official hall of records for games from Frogger all the way up to Wii Fitness. But serving as referee and scorekeeper to the world's gamers is only a sideline to Walter's real interest: Transcendental Meditation as taught by the late Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Watch more Motherboard on VBS.tv: http://www.vbs.tv/motherboard Though none other than Judah Friedlander has declared it impossible for androids to cross the Valley of the Uncanny, the creations of Tatsuya Matsui's Flower Robotics just might be the first to make it. The trick is, instead of straining himself against the limitations of technology to invent a robot that flawlessly mimics an ultraintelligent, grown-up human like his peers, Matsui threw in the perfection towel and said "You know what? If the best we can do right now is a robot with the artificial learning skills of a toddler, why not make something that looks and acts like a robotic toddler?" (except it was probably in Japanese). WATCH MORE SKATE SURF SNOW VIDEOS ON VBS! Not really, Skate Europe is more like a TransEuropean miniseries tour, starting with Britain. We went to the UK to meet with a healthy cross-section of English skateboarding. In London, OG The South Bank locals like Winstan Whitter and Ben Jobe were nice enough to talk us about there beloved spot, and in Bristol we had the pleasure of chitchatting with high-ollie-ing champion Danny Wainwright about his home town. We even managed to scrounge up Ben Nordberg and Kris Vile to represent the new guard.
