This piece is based on true events. I met a homeless man who was sitting on a bench outside a local barbershop. It was a very hot day, and as the man started to leave I got him a cup of water. Since the poem was published, the man has lost his other leg and the barber has passed away. The barbershop itself was torn down, and nothing has taken its place.
