I first noticed Busy as the wild single side kick to Courteney Cox on "Cougar Town". Pretty and funny, I did not know that she is also a mom. I was at a fundraiser for Joyful heart, Mariska Hargitay's charity to help empower abused women. Sidebar, those heavy scripts she has to play on "Law and Order:SVU" (so heavy I can't watch them) inspired her to start this organization. So, they had a fashion show where TV actresses modeled vintage dresses with modern updates. They all looked great. "The Fashion Team" was there for a story and I, ever the sneak, kept pulling out my little camera and taping stuff for Cool Mom. This is the first of three vids from the event. By the way, Busy says that Courteney is honest about working on keeping her insane figure. "She hasn't had a carb in 20 years." I so prefer that story then the "I eat burritos, and I have a fast metabolism" blather, which makes me want to shove an eclair in their face. No carbs for 20 years? Wow, that's tough. But, then she is a millionaire, so there is that. Busy is more charming, pretty and fun even than on her show. The sound is a little challenging. Oh, and it was provident that I ran into her because the night before my friend Heather (a fab, single gal) had gotten the "let's just be friends" blather from a guy who seemed promising. She loves Busy, so I start it off with a shout out to her.

When Vivien was a little I had heard about Stroller Strides. A group of gals, led by a mom who workout together in public places as they push their kids in their strollers. It's an inexpensive exercise class and one of the few ways you can workout with hiring a baby sitter. Being a new mom everything seemed so tough to do at first. But I did eventually go and got something out of it but didn't know if it was quite my people. With Rex I didn't care if I was throwing off our precious schedule. I needed to move this body. So, I started back with the striders. The same nice gal is running the group and fortunately this time I feel like I connect with the moms better. In the beginning of the year I wasn't working much I went a lot.. now, not as much. Anyway, one day the moms were talking between dips and singing "Wheels on the Bus" while we worked on our triceps, and that is what led to this vid.

It's the small things that can make up a good life. Just being with your baby while they do their thing and you do yours. How a baby is perfectly content to play and explore as long as mom, or dad, is nearby. If mommy isn't there, they cry and race to find you. I love this time with Rex. We play for a bit and then I jump on the phone or the computer for a little bit and he is fine. My house looks like a small bomb went off, but that's ok. As long as we are together.

I think part of being a good parent is embracing your dorkiness. I was just at the park with Vivien for her sports class, and I had on a navy hoodie, brown velvet sweat pants, and worn sneakers. No makeup, no shower (hey, bath the night before). One dad strode into the park with newsboy cap, leather blazer and posture that said, "These kids haven't beaten me down!" I thought I wish I had an outfit on. I wish I had clothes that match. But, then again, why? I'm chasing after Rex crawling through the grass and sand. I'm lugging a bag over my shoulders full of snacks, water and diapers. A bag that would ruin the line of any stylish outfit. So, why bother? Why not just be covered and utilitarian and embrace it. Yeah, I don't dress up, I'm in momcognito. Yeah, my roots are deep, and my nails are jagged because I'm too tired or too busy to leave my kids to attend to that. And yeah, when I go to work ,my motherhood can betray my attempt at professionalism. Have you ever had a moment like this at work?

I was just speaking to my dad. He said his weekend was about air conditioning (it's been hot and smokey in LA) and the funeral ( Ted Kennedy's). I said, "Me too!" We hung on the phone with each other for about 30 minutes during the wake Friday night. We have divergent political views, but my dad and I love history and politics and it's hard not to feel connected to the Kennedys. We were critiquing some of the speeches and who moved us the most. Orin Hatch,charming, Biden, throws his heart on the table, Sen. Culver, very funny (sidebar: during the funeral Saturday morning Ted Jr. won the weepy award. Touching!)Some of the commentators have been saying that some of the Kennedy's associates might ask themselves now, "What would Teddy do?"When I was watching it all, I just wished I had been invited to sail with him. Looks so cool. (Growing up a middle class kid in Culver City we didn't have a family sport. Wait, I take that back. Figuring out where to go to eat for dinner and having a fight over the one good seat in the family room while "Love Boat" was one, that was sport.) But knowing me, I probably would have yakked.In my own life as a mother I sometimes say, "What would mommy do?" Thankfully I can ask her. So, this week a special two parter of Morency, my mom.
