Sen. Hatch Calls for Energy Policy that Increases American Energy Production
On February 29, 2012, in a speech on the Senate Floor, US Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) called on President Obama to put forward an energy policy that increases American energy production and creates jobs here at home. Hatch outlined a number of ways the President has stood in the way of increased American energy production, and lower gas prices and home heating costs, such as stopping the Keystone XL pipeline project and closing off federal land to American energy production. In his speech, Hatch said that, "Whether it is closing off more federal land to American energy production or saying no to the Keystone pipeline, this White House has shown that it is more focused on appeasing its extremist ideological allies than putting forward an energy policy that works for Utahns and Americans everywhere." Hatch added that "Rather than advance an energy agenda that would spur production, lower prices, and create jobs, the President continues to advocate for increased taxes on oil and gas production in the United States. " Earlier this month, the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) reduced the federal lands available to oil shale and tar sands development in the West from 2 million acres to only 461965 acres. Closing off these lands is a significant missed opportunity to create jobs and lower energy costs for Utah and other Western states. Today, Hatch said that "Days after announcing in his State of the Union, an 'all-of-the-above strategy that develops every available source of ... In Speech, Hatch Blasts Washington Democrats for Ongoing Attacks on Religious Freedom
On February 17, 2012, in a speech on the Senate floor, US Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), a current member and former Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today blasted Washington Democrats' ongoing attacks on religious freedom protections by forcing religious institutions to provide preventive health services, including birth control, abortion inducing drugs and emergency contraception, even if it is against their conscience and deeply-held beliefs. "To hear members of the Administration and some members of Congress talk, it is clear to me that providing abortion-inducing drugs, sterilizations, and the morning-after pill to women is more important than the First Amendment that we are sworn to the nation and our constituents to defend," said Hatch. "I do not shock easily, but the cavalier attitude of the President, his administration, and many in Congress to this frontal assault on religious liberty is truly shocking. There was a time when both parties, liberals and conservatives, could come together on the matter of religious liberty. But not any longer." Hatch Challenges Sec. Sebelius on the Administration's Assault on Religious Freedom
Question and answer from the Feb. 15, 2012 Senate Finance Committee Hearing. US Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, today questioned Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on the Obama Administration's decision to circumvent constitutionally-guaranteed religious freedom protections by forcing religious institutions to provide preventive health services, including birth control, abortion inducing drugs and emergency contraception, even if it is against their conscience and deeply-held beliefs. The hearing was convened to examine the President's Fiscal Year 2013 budget proposal. Despite President Obama and Secretary Sebelius' announcement last Friday that the Administration intended to revise its policy, Hatch believes the only way to ensure that religious liberty is protected is through a full exemption for all religious institutions. At today's Finance Committee hearing, Sebelius could not say whether an analysis had been done to back up the Administration's claims that the mandate is consistent with constitutional and statutory protections for religious freedom. Hatch asked Sebelius, "I wrote you last July that your proposed contraceptive mandate would be 'an affront to the natural rights to life, religious liberty and personal conscience.' I note for the record that your response to my letter completely ignored this issue. Last October, 27 Senators joined me in writing you again, asking for any analysis ... Question and answer between Sen. Hatch and Sec. Geithner at the Feb. 14, 2012 hearing on the President's budget. US Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, today pushed Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to address a number of issues during a committee hearing examining the President's budget proposal for FY 2013. In addition to his prepared remarks, Hatch pressed Secretary Geithner to discuss the European-sized share of GDP accounted for by the federal government, the administration's failure to offer any serious entitlement reform or plan to close down the taxpayer-draining mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Sen. Hatch Slams the White House's Attack on Religious Freedom
Senator Hatch blasts the Obama Administration's attack on religious freedom. Hatch said the decision to mandate preventive services, including birth control and emergency contraception, for health insurance plans violated the landmark law, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and further highlighted the constitutional defects of the $2.6 trillion partisan health law. In a speech on the Senate floor today, US Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), a current member and former Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, blasted the Obama Administration's attack on religious freedom under the Constitution. Hatch said the decision to mandate preventive services, including birth control and emergency contraception, for health insurance plans violated the landmark law, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and further highlighted the constitutional defects of the $2.6 trillion partisan health law. "The administration, rather than side with millions of religious Americans who just want to be left alone to practice their faith, decided to throw in with the most radical of pro-abortion advocates," said Hatch. "They decided to subordinate our central constitutional commitment to religious liberty to a radical agenda that is overtly hostile to these people of faith." Hatch has long fought to preserve religious freedom under the US Constitution. He was the principal Republican co-sponsor of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, bipartisan legislation that prohibited the federal government ...
