The reduced speeds will mean longer trips, but slightly cheaper ticket prices. The changes come nearly a month after two bullet trains collided in Wenzhou City, killing at least 39 people. China's high-speed trains will reduce their speed during the initial operation period according to a recent decision by the State Council. Under the new operational program, high-speed trains from Shanghai to Hangzhou will reduce their speed from 350 km/h to 300 km/h. Trains traveling from Ningbo to Xiamen will reduce their speed from 250 km/h to 200 km/h. In addition, ticket prices will drop by five percent. This reduction in both the speed and ticket price will mainly affect the coastal railway lines in Zhejiang Province. Ticket prices for more than 20 high-speed trains running from Hangzhou to Xiamen will decrease by 10 to 20 yuan. The lower speeds will add about 30 minutes to the trip time. Five high-speed trains in the Beijing-Shanghai and Shanghai-Hangzhou lines will stop after August 16. Passengers who bought tickets for suspended routes can either get a refund or change the time of the trip. Tickets for travel under the new program go on sale August 24.
