Previewing the Graduation Promise Act

U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman previews the Graduation Promise Act (GPA), a bill he will introduce to the Senate next week that would focus federal resources on high schools with serious dropout problems. Persistently low-performing high schools and a high dropout rate are serious problems in New Mexico: the state currently graduates only 54% of high school seniors every year, and contains nearly 40 of the 2,000 schools in the country with persistently low rates of grade promotion. Bingaman has introduced GPA in the past and is optimistic that it will be signed into law this session of Congress. Bingaman continues to work with members of the Senate Finance Committee on health care reform; the Committee may vote on the bill next week.
