Tv B Gone Jacket
[LESS INFO] 249 VIEWS | ADDED 20:00:16 06/03/11
Whenever I bring my TV-B-Gone out to restaurants, I look suspicious pointing it around. So I embedded the device into a jacket and turned it into a wearable TV silencer. For the switch, I sewed paths of conductive thread that become bridged by the metal zipper pull when it passes by. At the restaurant or bar, all I have to do is unzip my jacket to turn off the TV(s).

How To Get Started With Make Projects
[LESS INFO] 149 VIEWS | ADDED 17:39:55 05/27/11
Matt Richardson made this excellent video to show you how easy it is to get started using and contributing to Make: Projects . >
For those of you eager to boast about your maker prowess, but haven't yet tried Make: Projects , I encourage you to take a look at this video to introduce you to what the site is all about and how it works. Make: Projects is a constantly growing cookbook for makers, so even if you're only looking for inspiration for your next project, there's a trove of ideas there. Some of my favorites include the wildly popular Doorstop Stash and the Mini Fume Extractor . Don't let your creations just sit in your workshop or basement, share them with your fellow makers on Make: Projects!

How-To: Toy Animal Rack
[LESS INFO] 133 VIEWS | ADDED 20:00:01 05/20/11
Style starts at home, and your home should be filled with things that make you happy. Nothing makes me happier than animals of all kinds, so I incorporate them into my home decor as much as possible. It's starting to look like a jungle in here! Today we add another rad element with my toy animals racks .
I found these adorable little animal figurines at an art store, and upon seeing Anthropologie's white ceramic animal hooks, I wanted to do the same using my small creatures. Then I came across Steph Mantis's and couldn't believe my eyes. This was exactly what I pictured. You can purchase one of Steph Mantis's racks or make your own with me as shown in today's video! I also wrote up a detailed step-by-step over on Make: Projects .
One of the coolest things about this project (aside from the fact that it is adorable!) is that it is perfect to customize. My brother-in-law loves dinosaurs, so I could do a whole rack of different dinos for him. Or I could do barnyard animals for my little nephew Aidan, or just dogs for my husband who is obsessed with all things canine.
The dowels make the animals interchangeable, so you can switch them up for the season or mood. What animals would you include? Leave in a comment and enjoy the video! Laser-cut t-rex skull necklace by Sleek & Destroy .

Meet the Makers: Christina McFall
[LESS INFO] 111 VIEWS | ADDED 15:00:05 05/19/11
Christina McFall is obsessed with color, texture, form, and chemical reactions. She approaches the art of cyanotype printing with the mind of a scientist, carefully recording tests and cataloging results. She hand draws and tessellates patterns with her tablet to produce her negatives. Her innovative printing methods harness UV light to create Prussian Blue prints on fabric. She then hacks the dye with various treatments to induce a rainbow of unexpected results. Ultimately she creates beautiful and useful pieces with the prints.
Meet Christina McFall and get an up-close view of her intricate textiles at Maker Faire Bay Area, May 21 & 22 .

Wall Monogram with Plaster Letters
[LESS INFO] 181 VIEWS | ADDED 21:01:00 05/06/11
In today's CRAFT Video, I show you how to make custom plaster letters to represent your loved ones in your home. My husband, Will, and I were given gold letters to represent our initials awhile ago, and we have been looking for complimentary vintage letters for Milo and Gracie (our beloved pups).
Subscribe to the CRAFT Podcast in iTunes , download the m4v video directly, or watch it on YouTube .
When I came across this tutorial for DIY Plaster Letters by Arounna Khounnora of Bookhou on Poppytalk, I couldn't resist making my own.
I love how they turned out! You can paint them or wrap them in a vintage map or cool fabric, but I dig the industrial white look. What initials would you make, and for whom?

Color Block Mountain Painting
[LESS INFO] 209 VIEWS | ADDED 20:00:00 03/25/11
In today's CRAFT Video we make a color block mountain range painting using a technique you could use for a plethora of projects.
Subscribe to the CRAFT Podcast in iTunes , download the m4v video directly, or watch it on YouTube .
Inspired by the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in my home state of Virginia, I created a 5-paneled blue gradient mounting range with only two paint cans. Using just one rich shade of blue and mixing it with various amounts of white gave us a really lovely palette to work with.
You could use this same technique on a dresser with multiple drawers, painting each drawer a different shade, you could incorporate it on a wall with big, bold stripes would make a stunning statement, or forget the gradient aspect and transform your stairs using different colors.
I first tried a mountain mural on 2 sliding closet doors that have since fallen off their hinges and been discarded. You can see my attempt here , and read the written instructions for a slightly different approach in my paint guide for Venus Zine below.
