Austrian Artist Plunges Into Lighting and Furniture

??? Manfred Kielnhofer
Irwin Weiner ASID - Austrian artist Manfred Kielnhofer makes a spectacle of himself - and that's in a good way. I like the moxie of any creative soul who makes daring and bold statements, then puts them out in public for all to see. And Kielnhofer puts them out there, such as performance art in public parks and plunking his ethereal Time Guardians/Light Guardians sculptures into different settings taken from movies, posing wounded angel models with the ghostly figures, and photographing them in settings all over the world - see slide show below. The artist just sent us photos of a new series of tables, lighting, and chairs - see above and below - that follow his fascination with tubes (he made his Interlux chair out of industrial cardboard tubes). I applaud the creative audacity that keeps artists and designers experimenting and challenging our comfort zones.

Spring Planning: Plant an English Cottage Garden

Terry Winters for Guardian News and Media Limited
Jay Johnson - While our Design2Share interior design expert Irwin Weiner is away in Venice with a client, I'm keeping our daily video features going. Our editors and I found a great intro video covering the basics of planning an English cottage garden - more rambling, casual, fragrant, and colorful than typical North American plots. I'm a gardening nut - a weekend warrior - and embraced the cottage garden style seven years ago. Plants are closer together, they interact with hardscape like pergolas and trellises, they're grouped in massive clumps and bunches, and despite the casual and overrun look, they require good pruning and transplanting to keep plants healthy and blooming. Tom Cole from UK's Capel Manor College is your video tour guide, but also check out this article from The Guardian on cottage garden basics. Spring is coming; start planning now! Holiday Table Decor

The soothing, calm, confident voice and decorating and gardening talents of P. Allen Smith make him the male equivalent of a M. Stewart. He brings us into his beautiful home, always with a roaring holiday fire in the background, and shows us something "quick and easy" that he just throws together. Perfectly. Without breaking a sweat. But far from hating the perfectionist final results, we can get some nifty tips from how he puts something together. Mr. Smith will sell you his holiday collection basic centerpiece (click on the link below) or you can use your own greenery and stick them in a florist clay base. Purchase a few skinny tin trays, fill them with water (put something underneath to protect your table surface from moisture and scratches), and set wet florist clay forms along the trays. This becomes the perfect medium for sticking in all the fresh greenery and other materials. Keep the clay and trays watered regularly and your greens should last a few weeks. Florist picks are also essential; wire them onto the end of ornaments and other items and stick them wherever you need along the centerpiece. Check out the P. Allen Smith holiday collection with Berry Family of Nurseries for instant fresh wreaths, garlands, and centerpieces.

This video is positively hypnotic. It captured our imagination because it's one of those rare examples of how the complete manufacturing cycle of a piece of furniture can be a fascinating and "Wish I could have thought of that!" process. Designer Rainer Mutsch created his Dune line of outdoor furniture from sheets of 100% recyclable fiber cement. The video shows how these panels are molded and transformed into seating.

Savvy Furniture Buying

Author Jennifer Litwin - also known as The Shop Cop - has traveled the country telling consumers about the pitfalls of furniture buying. With a largely unregulated furniture industry, it's important to follow careful guidelines and seriously examine furniture and the "fine print" to make sure you're buying something that's good quality. Good example: case goods marked "oak" or "cherry" or "mahogany" may just have a veneer of that finish over particle board that won't wear well over time. Worse yet, there may be no such wood present in the piece and you're really dealing with a finish or stain by that name over lesser-quality wood like pine. Here's a video with a few tips from her book Best Furniture Buying Tips Ever!

With Halloween over, we start to turn our attention to the November-December holidays. That means setting a festive table, and in this Pottery Barn video, designer Susanna Salk gives us some tips on making a few key purchases to create versatile and simple holiday tablescapes. You don't have to scream out "It's Christmas!" by turning your home into a kitsch fest, but you can focus on the winter theme and bring in fresh evergreens, berries, and use reflective surfaces like glass, silver, and mercury glass along with candlelight to add glittery warmth to your home.
