China Mobile Profits Down for First Half of 2012
It was a difficult first half of the year for China Mobile, the Mainland's largest cell phone carrier. Although the state-owned company has more subscribers than any other company in China, it made a 1.5 percent profit in the first half of the year, or $9.9 billion, according to a Thursday announcement. It caused their shares to drop five percent after the news got out... the biggest one-day drop in a year. China's state-owned phone carriers have been under the gun to improve their networks to support faster data transfer rates for smartphones and tablet PCs. In a statement, Chairman Xi Guohua said (quote), "We faced a number of severe challenges including the increase in mobile penetration, intensified competition, as well as the impact of new technologies and services that are replacing traditional communications services." China Mobile said over 33 million accounts were added during the period, as well, putting it at 683 million subscribers strong. Verdict in Gu Kailai Trial Will Be Announced On Monday
The verdict for the murder trial against Gu Kailai and her family aide is expected to be announced by a Chinese court on Monday. Verdicts and sentences are usually delivered on the same day. The wife of once powerful Chongqing Party Secretary Bo Xilai could be facing a sentence from 10 years in prison to the death penalty. State media reports that Gu confessed to the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood, while family aide Zhang Xiaojun stressed he was merely Gu's accomplice. The news of the announcement comes from information provided to the Associated Press by an official at the Hefei Intermediate People's Court. That's where last week's trial was held. The official did not give her name. According to her, the hearing would be open to the public but all seats in the courtroom had "already been taken up." The same thing happened with last week's trial, preventing foreign media from attending. Chinese Smartphone Maker Challenges iPhone
The latest Chinese challenge to the iPhone was launched on Thursday in Beijing by Xiaomi Technology. Xiaomi is one of many local companies producing cheap alternative phones to Apple's iPhone. Their latest launch is the MI2, the successor to its popular MI (MiOne) smartphone. The MI2, which goes on sale in October at 1999 yuan, or $310 USD, has a quad-core processor, eight mega-pixel camera and a voice-assistant similar to Apple's Siri, yet sells for less than half the price. [Li Pei, Office Worker]: "Its functions are pretty good, and the price is great for what you get. As for the Apple iPhone, I think that's all about going for the brand. I don't like going for the brand. First of all, Xiaomi is Chinese, and I think everyone should support local-made products. Plus, it's a great product." Smartphones from Xiaomi have become so popular that they sell out completely just minutes after going on sale online. The company was founded by CEO Lei Jun, who said last month its first-half revenue was close to $1 billion after selling more than three million phones. [Guo Dong, Xiaomi Fan]: "The phone's price is definitely unbeatable. 1999 yuan compared to the cheapest iPhone on the black market, which is 3700 yuan, it has a big advantage in price. And the configuration and the data show that it's definitely very popular, given the situation for most people, because 1999 yuan for students and the recently-employed is not a huge financial pressure." China PM Wen Thought to Be Confronting East China Loan Crisis
Anything Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao does around this period of time is sure to be scrutinized. Late summer has traditionally been the time for secretive high-level meetings of Communist Party officials at the seaside resort town of Beidaihe. In this year of leadership change, the meetings are especially important. That's why Wen's appearance in the eastern province of Zhejiang, after several weeks of keeping a low profile, is being read as meaningful by observers of China's politics and economy. In a sign of just what sort of meaning Wen hopes will be attached to his visit, he used it to announce publicly his "confidence" in China's continued economic growth... although he added that the economy isn't yet "stable," and that "economic difficulty may continue for a while." According to both Chinese and Western analysts, Wen is likely seeking to send a message to Chinese banks and private lenders not to stop lending on account of the current increase of non-performing loans. Such loans, characterized by poor chances or conditions of profitable repayment, are especially common in some parts of Zhejiang Province, which has a relatively great number of small and medium-sized businesses, which need loans to survive and grow. China's central banking authorities estimated that, at the end of June 2012, the balance of non-performing loans of China's commercial banks was 452.8 billion RMB, or $71.2 billion, an increase of $4.6 billion on last year. Japan Deports Chinese Nationals From Diaoyu Islands
On Friday, Japan deported a group of 14 Chinese nationals who landed on the Diaoyu I on August 15th. The incident escalated tensions between Japan and China over the ownership of the islands. The Japanese government flew half the group from the city of Okinawan (o-kee-NAH-wan). They arrived in Hong Kong late Friday evening local time. Japanese coastguards escorted the remaining individuals out of Japanese waters. They are reported to be in good health. Although Japan denies expediting the Chinese nationals back to their homelands for political reasons, the Chinese regime had voiced strong opposition to the group's detention. Protestors also forced security to be stepped up outside the Japanese Embassy in Beijing. Tokyo's nationalist governor criticized the prime minister for giving into pressure from China and immediately returning the Chinese nationals. [Tetsuro Suzuki, 63-year-old retiree] "Japan is not prepared to go to war any time soon but at the same time if in Japan we don't take any action we open ourselves up to criticism (by Japanese citizens), so the government needs to take their time to examine the situation, that's really their only choice." In 2010 when a Chinese fishing vessel intentionally ran into two police ships near the Diaoyu Islands, Japanese police detained the fisherman for two weeks. China cut off trade relations on rare earth metals and other goods to force the return of the fishermen. China and Japan have competing claims over the Diaoyu ... Mexico Finally on Google!
Thanks to a partnership between Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and Google Earth technology, users on Google Maps can now use Street View to see famous Mexican archaeological sites. Google Street View allows users to look at an image from any vantage point with a 360-degree, interactive interface. Among the locations now available: Chichen Itza, Teotihuacan, Monte Alb%aacuten, and El Taj%iacuten. [Miguel Alba, Marketing Director of Google Mexico]: "Today, we can say that we are the first to release such a complete collection of the patrimony of one country. We can see galleries that exist with UNESCO World Heritage sites. We have sites which have been specially designed for impact events such as a World Cup but a collection such as the one we are presenting today of Mexico for the world is one of a few we'll see." Using tricycles specially-equipped with the street view cameras, Google sent out cyclists to the archaeological sites. [Alfonso de Maria y Campos, Director of INAH]: "It's an innovation by Google that designed a photography system that is not invasive and adapts to circumstances. I think this speaks to their creativity which we hope to have. We worked with them and we accompanied them so that it would be done in the correct way accomplishing the objective with the least amount of damage for the site." 90 sites are expected to be included eventually. 20000 Louboutin Knock-offs Seized
On Thursday, August 16, customs agents displayed over 20000 seized counterfeit designer women's shoes with an estimated retail value of 18 million dollars, taken from the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. US Customs and Border Protection officers seized five shipments of fake Louboutins from China between July 27 and August 14. French designer Christian Louboutin uses a distinctive red sole as its trademark feature on its high end shoes, which these knock-offs have. [Elizabeth Ortega, Customs and Border Protection Officer]: "These shoes are a big trend right now. They are very high-end shoes that are worn by celebrities. If you look at the manufacturer retail price for all these five shipments, it's at $18 million. That means that each pair, had it been genuine, would have been sold at $1200 a pair. So that's a big loss for our revenue, had they entered the commerce of the United States." According to the agency, its customs officers made 1020 seizures at the Los Angeles-Long Beach ports. Chilean Student Protestors Dispersed
Police in Santiago, Chile used water cannons on students demanding education reform on Thursday. Several students were arrested as many others scattered from the school, as the city chose to use force after students rejected an offer from mayor Mayor Pablo Zalaquett. Students began holding sit-in demonstrations last week, as they demanded an overhaul of the education system. The police operations began Thursday, going from school to school, with more than two dozen being occupied. Student leader Camilla Vallejo had to say this: [Camilla Vallejo, Student Leader]: "It is a direct assault on public education and on the chance to advance towards ending inequality in Chile." Sandra Cafilaf, a representative of the Confederacion Suiza High School, considered the operation "repressive" and "excessive." [Sandra Cafilaf, Rep. of CS High School]: "We hold the interior minister and the mayors responsible, those who have given the order to act in a repressive manner and to use excessive force against youngsters who are only asking for change in this country; important changes that deal with educational demands." Protests over the education system have continued for over a year, as students call for an end of what they consider profit-driven, poor education. Car Speeds Through New York's Lincoln Tunnel at 190mph
Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard ripped through New York's Lincoln Tunnel early Wednesday morning, reaching speeds in excess of 190 mph. The Scottish driver flew under the Hudson river between New Jersey and New York City in under a minute, as part of a Red Bull Racing promotional tour for the Grand Prix of America scheduled for June next year. [David Coulthard, Former Formula F1 Driver]: "It's a weird attack on your senses when you go fast and you've got sort of this closure of the tunnel leading to the point. I was disappointed we couldn't go faster! We managed to do 190mph but I think it would have been great if we could have gone a bit quicker, but to have the opportunity to drive a Formula 1 car from New Jersey to New York it's totally unique." Earlier in the week, the 13-time winner on the F1 circuit drove the 2011 Red Bull car - last year's champion - around the planned street course of the Grand Prix of America, to test how the high performance vehicle handled the imperfections of the roads. The race will become only the second street circuit, after Monaco, on the Formula 1 tour, taking drivers around the hills of New Jersey with the Manhattan skyline in the background. The 2013 Grand Prix of America will become the second US stop for Formula 1, with the United States Grand Prix in Texas hosting its inaugural race at the end of this year. President Obama And Mitt Romney Face Off - As Paper Dolls!
US presidential candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney go toe-to-toe in a new paper doll book. Collectors can dress the men up in 16 different costumes ranging from battling robots to gladiators. Dover Publications Vice President Ken Katzman says the looks are based on American pop culture. [Ken Katzman, Dover Publications, Vice President]: "We have them as boxers, them as jousting knights, them as even sumo wrestlers. So a lot of different costumes battling robots, that you know, people just recognize as fun, kind of pop culture things." The book is the company's follow-up to their successful 2008 editions, which featured separate books for Obama and John McCain. [Ken Katzman, Dover Publications, Vice President]: "People want a fun unique collectible for an election. And actually back in '08 we did two books, one for candidate Obama, one for candidate McCain and they did great, we sold over 100000 copies. So for the 2012 edition we put both candidates together. You know, politics is rough and tumble, people want something humorous and different so we came up with these fun costumes to put together with the candidate's dolls, and we think people are going to love it." Each candidate is outfitted in their underwear - boxers and a t-shirt -which Katzman says is a paper doll tradition. Recently the Obama administration requested several of the paper doll books to use as gifts, suggesting that the novel collectibles even have the endorsement of the White House. For more news ... Royal Couple Wax Figures Drop in for Tea at British Embassy
Wax versions of Will and Kate were treated to afternoon tea at the British Embassy in Berlin on Thursday. The Royal pair dropped in before they end up in their new permanent home in Madame Tussauds wax museum on Friday. True to life and in line with diplomatic protocol, the waxworks were met by the deputy ambassador, Andrew Noble. [Andrew Noble, Deputy British Ambassador]: "I think it's just exciting. I mean I agree that they are very lifelike. And I'm sure an awful lot of people are going to see them and get very excited. That's one of the things about the members of the Royal family and about Madame Tussauds as far as I understand it. So I think people are going to be excited." The figures are being exhibited as part of a campaign to promote Britain overseas, in the year William's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, celebrates her 60th jubilee, and London is hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The popularity of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge has been on the rise since their wedding in 2011, and, according to a spokesperson for Madame Tussauds, the museum is happy to respond to the growing demand. [Nina-Kristin Zerbe, Press Spokesperson, Madame Tussauds]: "At the end of the exhibition we have a terminal and we are asking the visitors there who they were missing in the exhibition and who they would like to see. And especially after the wedding last year those two were in high demand. And so we gladly responded to the popular demand and have them here in house for the ... Boy's head wedged in guardrail
Finally today, a little boy in Guizhou province may have learned a lesson about playing with stones -- or stone railings to be exact. The young boy was playing with friends on a staircase, but managed to put himself in a hard position -- literally. For some reason, perhaps he wanted to see what was on the other side, his head became stuck between the stone railings, and playtime stopped being fun. Firefighters were called in to free the boy. First they tried to pry him out with their bare hands, but the stone%mdashand the young boy's head%mdashwould not budge. By now, the harrowing rescue effort had attracted quite a crowd. Eventually, the rescuers brought out a saw and, with some delicate and careful maneuvering, the boy was freed from the rather unpleasant stony confinement. The boy appears to be unhurt after the ordeal. He was however quite upset by the whole experience%mdashand probably won't be peering through stony railings again anytime soon. Lower Grain Output Could Fuel China Inflation: Analyst
China sharply increased its import of key grains, like corn, soybean and wheat the first half of this year. Total grain import at the end of June rose by 41.2% year-on-year. That's despite local authorities claiming domestic output has increased by 2.8%%mdasha record since 1997. Assistant Professor Frank Tian Xie says official figures are questionable. [Frank Tian Xie, Assistant Professor of Marketing, University of South Carolina Aiken]: "We know the propaganda and its figures cannot be trusted. It's like the stock of grains they claim to have. Even Premier Wen Jiabao has to climb up the silo to check if there are grains there when he does inspections. Officials nationwide are deceiving each other, superiors cannot believe the figures given to them." Xie believes output figures are lower than expected, and this could fuel inflation. [Frank Tian Xie, Assistant Professor of Marketing, University of South Carolina Aiken]: "Looking at the futures market, corn, soy bean and wheat prices are all climbing. Given the widespread flooding this year, summer crop yields is likely to drop. A big problem facing China now is economic stagnation and inflation. If the rising grain prices pushes up inflation this could directly affect social stability." On Tuesday, China's agricultural ministry announced what it called the "worst infestation in a decade" of corn crops. Armyworms have attacked about 10% of the country's corn. Analysts say up to 2% of total yield could be wiped out. For more ... From: NTDTV Views: 9 1 ratings Time: 01:27 More in News & Politics

Hong Kong Police Trial Small Cameras on Officers
Police officers in Hong Kong will trial small cameras worn on the body. Police say the cameras are an attempt to cut crime, while human rights groups say the new technology will invade the privacy of Hong Kong's citizens. An unknown number of frontline police officers will wear the small cameras during a three-month trial period, according to a report in The South China Morning Post. The devices will be placed on officers in tactical units and in the Kowloon West emergency units. The cameras are worth $875 each and are around the size of a cigarette packet. Officials hope the cameras will deter crime, keep police from acting out of line during protests or in periods of civil unrest, and aid with gathering evidence. If the test is deemed a success, the Hong Kong police force will buy around 7000 of the small devices. Opponents say police could potentially use the cameras to monitor political activists and protests against the Chinese regime because there are currently no laws regarding use of the small cameras.
