Beach Walk 695 - Paying for the Sins of Each Other
[LESS INFO] 213 VIEWS | ADDED 03:00:34 12/27/08
I got a bit distracted today but I was wanting to make a point about how we are interconnected - and that is from the "good news bad news" department. Some things others do we are stuck cleaning up. It's not right but is, is. I find the faster I can process my anger, the faster I can get to "OK now what can be done about it?" Living on an island there are all kinds of examples of where we overlap with each other and are subject to side effects of each other. Just as in the movie I saw last weekend, Flash of Genius. The Ford of today is a very different company, culture-wise, than 30 years ago, nonetheless the current management is responsible for running the show.

Lots of self-help books talk about leadership, but rarely do they talk about followers, or co-creators. There's honor and value in all of those roles - regardless of the big push to be all you can be, and be more, and get ahead, and take charge, etc. I think you get my drift. Just putting out a little Beach Walks philosophy, looking at the other side of the coin.

Beach Walk 599R - Homage to Age
[LESS INFO] 6 VIEWS | ADDED 04:56:02 03/03/08
I have not always had the most self confidence. But I must say the older I get, the more comfortable I am living in my own skin, viewing life through my own eyes, all instead of worrying what others think or how I should perform.
I wonder if this feeling of deep-seated comfort could somehow be passed on, downloaded, or shared with younger people, and if so, how that might transform the world. I personally spent so much energy just managing my worries, many of which at this stage in life I see as utterly trivial!
Maybe the sheer force in numbers and rebelliousness of the baby boomers is transforming the idea that it is more fun to be young. In fact, I do seem to be aware of far more multi-generational friendships than ever before. Is that true for you? Do you find getting older "a good thing"?
P.S. Shane and Rox are traveling this week so please enjoy some of our Beach Walks Classic Episodes!

I cannot stop watching this episode! It was shot by moi, on the little Sanyo Xacti , there are water drops on the lens, it is a little over-exposed and a lot shakey, and of course I wanted more shots. But there was magic on the beach this day. Then I heard this beautiful song on Dave's Lounge #106 and I had to put these ingredients together. Sometimes the energy is so much more than the technique - this is true for me, today.
This episode is dedicated to each of you loyal viewers, who so generously receive whatever we share, who shower us with love and affection, who even travel all the way from Canada (and soon from the UK I hope) and share some of your precious vacation time with us.
I don't know how to thank the Shanghai Restoration Project featuring Di Johnston for this beautiful song. I already purchased two copies of the album on iTunes . I hope you will purchase their music to encourage more of this in our world. As for Dave, I have listened to his podcast from the first episode, and he stands in rare company to have been so focused from the start, and he only gets better.

hane and I are going to the mainland and my loving sister Barbara has arrived to care for our darling Lexi. Both girls are happy about that and it would appear Barbara also bright some amazing weather with her - the scenery today is absolutely stunning! This morning we were talking about buttons - the kind that trigger confusion and reactions in each other. I may want the other person to stop pushing, but in reality, the button resides with me. Barbara has a tip for getting a grip on the experience of "stop pushing my buttons!"

We invited Bob and Sue Schroeder from Canada over to visit our beautiful windward shores, to see something besides Waikiki. They were walking, while Shane, Lexi, and I were swimming. As we came out of the water, I was approached by another couple, who had noticed Bob and Sue, then saw Lexi out swimming. "Are you Rox?" And so we met Jeanne and Tom from Minnesota! We didn't have our usual gear, but we did have a lot of fun! Join us as they tell us some of their favorite discoveries about Hawaii, courtesy of Sue, a Toastmasters club president who came up with the "Table Topic!"

Beach Walk 595 - Cranky Geek

One of the online videos we watch on our Apple TV at home is Cranky Geeks . They cover tech topics, but one of my favorite aspects of the show is the name. I just love how people are more and more choosing to be who they are. It was similar to what struck me in the Iconoclast episode with Laird Hamilton and Eddie Vedder I talked about in Beach Walk 573 . But I am often slow to allow that same awareness into my personal relationships, especially with Shane aka Secret Cameraman aka my own Cranky Geek. Being true to who you are is not just for celebrities any more!
Mahalo to Dave for providing today's intro - what a great voice!

I was reading about the French trader who committed over $7 billion in fraud. People have discussed how to prevent this in the future. Naturally many minds head towards complicated procedures, custom programming and tracking software and so forth, when actually, something as simple as a mandatory vacation away from the office can be a powerful intervention tool. I love it when very simple and human remedies can be found. I am going to give extra attention this week to seeking simple solutions.

We started Beach Walks exactly two years ago. Amazing, we went 402 days without missin a day! Now, we are enjoying our leisurely five days a week schedule. We barely made it today before sunset, but what a reward! It was a top 10 day and we stayed for another hour to have pupus and a twilight swim. More details on the reef !

OK, so the world still has a lot of messes, but there are increasing signs of massive change for the better. Today, I want to mark a few of those, starting with the very profound and symbolic apology issued by the Australian government last week, as its first order of business for the new session. Imagine over 100,000 aborigine children taken from their homes under force, placed in abusive group and foster "homes" and stripped of their family connections, their language, their customs. I hope this will never happen again anywhere. Listen to the Happy Guru podcast from Australia to learn more about the Stolen Generation.
Though this may seem far away from you, you can still lend your support. Watch today's episode for more in this.
On another note, I voted tonight in the Hawaii caucuses. There was unprecedented voter turnout - four to ten times the average amount in various locations. People are getting off of their couches and taking a role in determining their/our future. I just love that.

If you follow the comments on Beach Walks or have joined us over on The Reef (our social network) then you've no doubt come across "Bob from Canada." For the month of February, he is "Bob from Hawaii" and is joined by his charming wife Susan. We met for a sunset walk at Magic Island, followed by dinner and "dessert" at a live Mighty J concert. That fulfills my definition of "Life is Good!" We talk about Bob and Susan's trip to the big waves on the north shore and when (and when not) to get a car in Waikiki.

Buddy started a discussion over on The Reef about the difference between what we think we will become as children and what develops as we actually grow up. Combined with how people seem stuck in. Lots of insights from Susan, Earl, and William, including a mention of Lou Holtz's list of 100 things . He says people don't realize they may not have as much time as they think. There's plenty more on teh reef; please join us over there.

One of the things I have not liked about our daily habits is the use of plastic bags to clean up Lexi's poo. Recently I found about and ordered some corn-based bags that are fully biodegradable. The more I learn about plastic bags, the more I see them as a scourge on the planet (one million per minute!!), much like plastic water/juice/soda bottles . Get some facts here on the enormous use of plastic bags and their repercussions.

W00t! The sun is out! Praise be to the weather. Let's face it: kind words and genuine praise just feel good. It is all too common when talented people take on a type of snobbery, as if they have earned some form of superiority. I much prefer to give my business to people who are competent and friendly, like the people I have recently discovered at J Salon .
