The Best Traffic Alert Ever

First video post in a long time. I recently "finished" a project I've spent a long time building. It's kind of a filter? Anyways, there are lots of switches an knobs. I hooked it up to my nintendo for some fun times. This song is called "The Best Traffic Alert Ever."

Episode #12: Sandpipers
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 06:36:09 01/28/08
Oddly enough I have wanted to do this video for a long time and only just got around to finishing it. I had a lot of fun recording the audio, though my upstairs neighbor probably thinks I'm insane. I heard her shut her window right when I was getting really into it. Though, I'm pretty sure most people use sound effects when they describe sandpipers running back and forth across the beach. Other people tell stories with sound effects, right? Guys?

A quick message from your friendly Jamaican raft guide. Footage taken from a friends sailing trip down to the island a few years back. Sorry for the unpolished cut, I wanted to get this out tonight as I figure it is a pertinent message to keep in our minds tomorrow.peace

I recently discovered a few old classic films out on the Public Domain. That's pretty much all you need to know. Actually, this could be a case of sleep walk video editing, but I'm mostly sure I was awake.Drewp.s. Sorry for the wait in between videos, I was protesting all things internet for a while there.

Episode #10: Presidential Impressions
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 06:16:37 07/06/07
Globalburger is proud to present a short video collection of the most ludicrously accurate Presidential impressions this world has ever seen. Borrowed from Joe LaRocca's film February, the impressions mark day 19 of Joe's oh-so-dutiful journey through the cosmos . . . er, I mean through the month of February. If you haven't already, check out Episode #5 for more info on February, it's worth a look if you like introspective silliness. Lately I feel a lot more people should take a time-out and embrace their inner silly . . . hopefully this will help.Cheers,Drew‚

Episode #9: Macintosh Mutiny
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 06:51:10 06/08/07
This video doesn't need much of an explanation. Joe Larocca and I got bored in the editing lab one day while working at the New York Film Academy, and decided to make a film using the only available actors . . . eMacs and computer mice. What's fun about it is that the students, who thought we were nuts at first, eventually pitched in and helped to move the mice around, frame by frame. All in all it took us about 3 hours from start to finish, and was a huge hit at the NYFA staff film festival. Sometimes making a film really fast before your internal nay-sayer kicks in is a great way to grease the ol'e filmmaking gears and avoid the paralyzing perfectionist attitude a lot of filmmakers have, myself included. 48 hour film competitions are a great way to participate in super-fast filmmaking, and some of the end products are loads of fun to watch. Try it yourself!Cheers,Drew

Episode #8: Dr. Bleep and the Thingamagoop @ Bent
[LESS INFO] 3 VIEWS | ADDED 06:01:48 05/25/07
John-Mike, aka Dr. Bleep, shows off his crazy 'Thingamagoop' synthesizer friends at the L.A. Bent Festival. As listed on his site, Dr. Bleep explains why he made these things as simply "because there are not nearly enough beeping, zapping, bixxerfouping, anthropomorphic synthesizer monsters in the world."I'll admit, I'm a bit behind the times putting up a video from the Bent Fest, at least as far as the blogosphere is concerned, but Dr. Bleep's toys were so absurdly fun that I couldn't keep this to myself. You can check out a hilarious video Dr. Bleep made of his Thingamagoops hanging out and playing on an old turntable here. In a world where more and more functionality is packed into electronic devices, these little guys are refreshingly simple and straight to the point. What do they do? They make noises. Combined that with a few twisting knobs, switches, and light a sensitive photoresistor, you get a highly interactive device super-fun toy. Blinking lights, cuckoo noises, knobs and switches . . . honestly, what more do you want in life?Check out Dr. Bleep's creations at bleeplabs.com!Cheers,Drew

Episode #7: Arrivato Zampano & un omaggio piccolo
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 07:42:28 05/11/07
The brief history of this episode is that I opted to make a short film in lieu of a final paper for my Italian Cinema class in college. Naturally I didn't do anything for it until the darn thing was due, so I found myself in the rain with my friend Catherine (thanks again, by the way) filming this thing with a giant tarp secured to the camera using sticks and plants I found lying around. No time for bungie cords. The fun part was that it was only the two of us, so I had to run back and forth pushing record, which is mostly why some of the shots are oddly framed . . . that and I was into weird films that semester. The whole thing was basically a surprise the first time I watched it through as I didn't have any time to check my work before printing it to DVD. All in all, from paper to DVD, it took about 4-5 hours. Total fun city. The whole thing was meant as a bit of a joke, mostly poking fun at Fellini's film, La Strada, but I don't think my professor got it because she recommended I submit it to the Tribeca film festival. Thats a true story, by the way.Anyways, special thanks to the University of Massachusetts marching band for playing the school fight song so well on that CD I have, and also to Catherine, who played an awesome Gelsomina . . . and put that paint all over her face . . . and hung out in the rain . . . and wore a towel for a cape. Actually, nix the thanks for the towel, everyone should be doing that.Cheers,Drew

Episode #6: The Loud Objects @ L.A. Bent Festival
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 10:39:32 04/27/07
Six episodes. This week I'm excited to show you a performance by the Loud Objects at the L.A. Bent Festival. Produced by The Tank, the festival is a celebration of circuit bending, a spectacular form of electronic music in which the instruments are built by short-circuiting electronic devices. Performers Tristan Perich, Kunal Gupta, and Chris McDonald serenade the Velaslavasay Panorama. By the way, there are two file sizes (both same format), the primary is large, the other is small(ish). What became clear to me from the festival was that the wiki definition of circuit bending didn't always reflect what was actually going on. Some performers did 'bend' toys and synths, but others used computer mother boards, video cards, a nintendo, and even a circuit powered by a steam engine. Yes, the steam engine was amazing. What seemed to be the unifying feature of all the performances was the emphasis on "spontaneity and randomness," as the wiki so nicely puts it. When you realize that the performer only seems to have a vague idea of what will happen, you can imagine its a lot of fun to watch them compose a completely original never-to-be-duplicated performance right in front of you. What I loved about Loud Object's performance was its transparency. These days, pretty much all mainstream content is smoke and mirrors, whereas LO builds their instrument, piece by piece, right in front of you. No apologies for the preliminary silence, no fancy electronics, just beautiful digital simplicity. I tried my best to keep the tricky editing techniques to a bare minimum in an attempt to achieve a similar transparency with this episode. If you have never cut together footage before, it is important to realize is that the editor can make radical changes, like swap audio tracks, cut bad footage, and even change the order of time itself; all of which are effective techniques designed to manipulate the outcome of the piece. The second you make the first cut you are imposing your will on the footage, so indeed there is some 'falseness' to this presentation, even with my intentions to achieve a sort of cinema verite style. However, there are only a few cut away shots, totaling about 10 seconds, when the video is not paired to its original audio track. What this means is that for 99% of the time the time the audio is paired to the original video. It could be shorter, but I loved every second of this performance and wanted to share it. So, all confessions over with, no apologies for shaky footage, no digital effects, limited cuts; Globalburger presents episode #6, Loud Objects at the L.A. Bent Festival.cheers,Drewp.s. send an email if you want me to post the whole performance, uncut, and I could put it up as a sub-episode on my blip.tv page.

Episode #5: February
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 18:25:48 04/21/07
Meanwhile, in an airplane flying over Middle America, Globalburger presents episode #5, day one of Joe LaRocca's film, February. For each of the 28 days in the month of February, Joe wrote, shot, and edited a short film, combined to form 43 minutes of zaniness. Let me explain why I choose day 1, other than the fact that it's an obvious starting point. February watches in the same way that a good Sunday comic reads; though you don't have to keep up with them every Sunday to appreciate a particular comic, a lot of the humor and meaning comes from developing a relationship with the characters over time. You could read an episode of Calvin & Hobbes without ever having looked at it before, but would you truly appreciate Calvin's philosophical ramblings while bombing down the hill on a sled with Hobbes? In the same way, there are some days from February you could jump right in and watch and probably enjoy, but you miss a lot. Each day builds on the previous until you are genuinely interested in Joe as a character, which is a strange thing to think of him as, especially if you know him personally. He even develops a cast of familiar characters to keep things interesting, including his dogs, a drum-set, some chairs, and even a shirt. On the whole it is a humorous piece, which makes for a fun watch, but the underlying introspective nature of February is what makes it fantastic.Enjoy day 1, and if you like it you can check out the rest of the film at topfeeg.blip.tv, and let him know you liked it. Filmmakers love to hear from people that appreciate their work. Most likely I will pick a few more days for later episodes, but I strongly suggest sitting down and watching the whole thing. Be sure to check out episode #6 next Friday(ish), a performance by Loud Objects at the L.A. Bent Festival.Cheers,Drew

Episode #4: Already Wal-Mart
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 15:41:14 04/13/07
I started this film as a satire on bad student films, but I actually like the way it came out. Oh the irony! Looking back, I can't help but find this interesting seeing as I have traded the lovely woods and hills of Western Massachusetts for L.A., one of the sprawl capitals of the world. Looking around here, I sure hope Hadley residents keep up the good fight. It is unclear whether they have been able to outright stop the new center from building on the wetlands and destroying the bike path, but thus far they have been able to at least cause a delay. April 6th, 2007, was their last deadline to submit their comments to the MA Secretary of Environmental Affairs, where they hope their words are taken seriously.Related links:http://wmass.walmartvoices.com/http://www.wakeupwalmart.com/news/20050908-tdc.htmlhttp://www.westernmassbuylocal.org/

Episode #3: Documentation of Frustration
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 20:29:03 04/06/07
What's up subscribers! Shout out to all those Democracy peeps, keep it righteous.Let's stick with the stop motion theme for Globalburger's episode #3. This short film is called "Documentation of Frustration," by Matthew Fels. Though it is tagged as stop motion, it's more of a mixed media film, as Matt freely changes between video, stills, and animation. The stop motion in Frustration is a totally different style from Jo's film in episode #2, in that it's like a series of jump cuts, instead of juxtaposed images intended to create fluid motion. Matt's style, coupled with the musical discord created by chopping up the music, captures frustration perfectly. What I like about this film is that Matt was able to take pieces of completely discontinuous ideas, notebooks, drawings, pictures, videos, and gather all that together and make a unique and cohesive piece. Rad. Check it out.By the way, I would love it if people left comments about the episodes at globalburger.net. I want to encourage the filmmakers to feel like this is a safe place to talk about their work, how they made it, what they might be working on now, etc. This is cool, let's make it work.

Episode #2: Echoes of Bats and Men
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 18:24:06 03/30/07
All this talk about stop motion has to do with Globalburger's second episode, which features a wonderful animated short, Echoes of Bats and Men, by Jo Dery. For me, her film is similar to the style and quality of the children's programs I grew up with, including the Sesame Street shorts, parts of Reading Rainbow, and the series Long Ago and Far Away, hosted by James Earl Jones. Like those shows, Jo's film has appeal for anyone ages 1 on up, with its interesting history lesson about Providence, beautiful artistic style, and engaging story. I first saw this film projected on a wall with Jo's old 16mm projector clacking away at the back of the room. If you ever get a chance to meet Jo, ask her if she is ever going to show it again from it's native 16mm format, as it is an awesome experience. If it were possible, I am sure that she would travel across the country projecting it on clothesline sheets, living room walls, or anything else flat enough. Since this is unfortunately not going to happen anytime soon, I am pleased to present the digital format that Jo so graciously has let me share with you.Take a look, I will bet that its sights and sounds stick with you as they have with me.Cheers,Drew
