FREETOWN, Sierra Leone 18 January 2008 -- A group of Sierra Leonean football players received the surprise of their lives recently, when football star and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham joined their informal game at a roadside pitch. Mr. Beckham was returning from a tour of UNICEF-supported programs in Bombali District and noticed the players as he drove to his hotel. He signalled his driver to circle back and return to the pitch, then quickly walked down a dirt path and greeted his brothers in sport. The players were completely caught off guard. MOSCOW, Russia, 25 February 2007 -- Last week in Moscow, UNICEF Ambassador Lucy Liu demonstrated her artistic skills during a visit to 'Maria's Children,' a unique art studio in the city's centre. The young artists at the studio are all orphans, or have otherwise been abandoned by their parents. Maria's Children is run by artist Maria Yeliseeva and has been a second home to thousands of children over the past 14 years. In a country where nearly 200,000 children live in institutions providing the minimum of custodial care, the studio is a beacon of hope. In this video, UNICEF correspondent Elizabeth Kiem reports on the aspirations of the young artists from this unique art studio. SIRBA, Sudan, 22 February 2008 -- Hundreds of children are unaccounted for, following militia attacks on villages in Sudan's West Darfur region. "There are an unknown number of children aged 12 to 18 who are missing, especially boys. Nobody knows what has happened to these children," said UNICEF's Head of Office for West Darfur, Naqibullah Safi. UNICEF and its UN partners sent an assessment mission to the towns of Sirba and Abu Surouj following government-backed militia attacks in West Darfur's northern corridor earlier this month. The team found that thousands of residents had fled their homes in the towns after multiple buildings were burned in the attacks. TOAMASINA, Madagascar, 21 February 2008 -- On the heels of a major storm that hit Madagascar just last month, this island nation was devastated once again earlier this week, when Cyclone Ivan touched down near Toamasina on its north-eastern coast. According to the Office of National Risk Management and Disaster, Cyclone Ivan struck six regions of Madagascar in all, leaving 22 dead and thousands of others homeless or in need of aid. The cyclone's violent winds of up to 190 km per hour, and heavy rainfall, have dealt a severe blow to communication networks here as well. Within hours, UNICEF was sending blankets, sanitation kits and other supplies to families in affected areas. UNICEF has also continued helping the authorities to assess the full extent of cyclone damage. To read the full story, visit: http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/madagascar_42931.html

UNICEF: IKEA donation brings much-needed books to Albania's school libraries
[LESS INFO] 81 VIEWS | ADDED 19:03:04 02/26/08
NEW YORK, USA, 25 February 2008 -- UNICEF and IKEA are re-igniting enthusiasm for reading amongst a generation of children in Albania who have been deprived of books. For almost two decades, libraries have been repurposed and school budgets slashed while the government has focussed on transitioning to democracy. Books have become a scarce and expensive commodity, out of reach for many poor families. The resulting dearth of literature has left well over half of Albanian 15-year-olds unable to complete more than the simplest reading tasks. With €1 million from UNICEF's largest corporate donor, the Swedish home furnishing retailer IKEA, the 'Albania Reads' project aims to open a library in each of 850 schools. In collaboration with the government, libraries have already opened in 160 schools -- to the delight of children and teachers alike. NAKURU, Kenya, 19 February 2008 -- When Yvonne's family fled the violence that ravaged their village, the eight-year-old lost her home, her precious plastic necklace, her school uniform and her classroom. "We don't have much," she said, "but we always had our school." The violence that swept through Kenya after December's disputed presidential election occurred as children such as Yvonne sought to start a new school year. As UNICEF strives to provide safety and stability to hundreds of thousands of Kenyan children, education is fundamental. As Kenya's crisis continues, UNICEF is urgently seeking $6.6 million for emergency services. Much of the money would go toward protection, education and assistance for more children. UNICEF: Bringing quality education to Indonesian children

SOLO, Indonesia, 15 February 2008 -- Ifah, 12, wakes up every day before dawn to get ready for school, reading over her lessons as she packs her bag. For this sixth-grader, learning is fun. "I love school, especially English," she says. For millions of children from poor families like Ifah's throughout Indonesia, a quality education is all too often out of reach. But both of Ifah's parents are encouraging her to keep on with her schooling, hoping that their daughter can make it beyond these streets. Ifah is enrolled in a school that uses a UNICEF-supported method known as Creating Learning Communities for Children (CLCC), which emphasizes well rounded education and open, cooperative techniques. UNICEF: $48 mill. appeal for Somalia's malnourished children
[LESS INFO] 15 VIEWS | ADDED 06:42:24 02/19/08
HARGEISA, Somalia 15 February 2008 --As violence surges across Somalia -- and cereal production turns out to be lower than originally forecast -- UNICEF fears that 2008 could be the worst-ever year for Somalia's children. New data show that undernutrition is above the emergency threshold and increasing. Despite generous humanitarian support up to the end of 2007, UNICEF's appeal for $48 million for its 2008 programmes has yet to receive any contributions. UNICEF has been able to keep programmes afloat, though at least half the 110 nutritional feeding programmes will have to close by the end of March unless new funds arrive immediately. UNICEF is urgently seeking $5.8 million to treat children at risk in Somalia. "Funding shortfalls will have a devastating impact on our ability to save lives," says UNICEF Representative in Somalia Christian Balslev Olesen. UNICEF: Students in Gaza suffer without heat or light

GAZA, Occupied Palestinian Territory, 13 February 2008 -- Nearly 400 government schools in Gaza have reopened their doors to a quarter of a million students returning from winter break -- but teachers and children have been met with classrooms that have neither heat nor light due to reduced power supplies. "Even before the fuel cuts, power shortages meant that children were already cold in classrooms," said Saeed Harb, who runs schools in Rafah, Gaza's southernmost district. "And many rooms didn't have light simply because there were no longer any light bulbs in the market. Children are finding it almost impossible to learn, and you can see it in their failing marks." UNICEF: $106 mill. appeal for humanitarian action in DRCongo

GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo, 14 February 2008 -- Not far outside this town that has swelled to ten times its size in as many years, the hardware of war can be found along all routes in this region of active volcanoes, forests and lakes. But it's not bullets or bombs that have led to the deaths of more people here than any other conflict since World War II. At a therapeutic feeding centre in Rutshuru, North Kivu, that had been cut off for months in the fighting, the real root of this emergency is in the silent scream of withered babies, of five year olds with sunken eyes and blotted bellies, of anxious mothers unable to breastfed, unwilling to give in. To continue responding to the chronic suffering of children and women, UNICEF is requesting $106 million for humanitarian activities in its Humanitarian Action Report which is being launched world wide this week. AMMAN, Jordan, 12 February 2008 -- Iraq's children saw little respite from violence and instability in 2007. But help may be on the way. A consolidated appeal for Iraq will be launched today to help humanitarian organizations respond to widespread suffering and deprivation. As part of this funding appeal, UNICEF is asking for $37 million to support vulnerable Iraqi children and families in 2008.The funds will enable UNICEF to expand its vital assistance -- including emergency health care, safe drinking water, sanitation, education and critical protective services -- to many children in Iraq who are not being helped. In this video, Iraqi schoolgirl Aasera (not her real name) discusses how the threat of violence has become part of her everyday life. BALI, Indonesia, 12 December 2007 -- On the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Change Conference now under way in Bali, Indonesia, UNICEF has held a series of events to highlight the effects of global warming on children and to ensure that young people are involved in debate on this issue. At a panel discussion, international delegates discussed the impact of climate change on children, particularly those living in less developed countries. "Children are more likely to succumb to natural disasters," said Uganda's Environment Minister, Maria Mutagamba. "Children are born into this climate change problem -- trees being cut, rubbish being burned. These are serious issues affecting a child's health and future." NEW YORK, USA, 5 February 2008 -- Changing the way early childhood and parenting are viewed could be instrumental in helping to reach vulnerable children and strengthen the communities that support their development. Last week, Dr. T. Berry Brazelton -- acclaimed for his decades of pioneering efforts in early childhood development and paediatrics -- visited UNICEF Headquarters in New York to discuss 'Touchpoints', his innovative model of parenting and child development. The discussion was part of a four-day UNICEF Early Childhood Development Consultation for staff from UNICEF headquarters and regional offices. The organization is pursuing ways in which to integrate principles from Touchpoints into its programmes for young children. With Dr. Brazelton's transformative approach, UNICEF hopes to implement a positive model of parenting, which is at the heart of nurturing and raising healthy children. UNICEF: After earthquake, Peruvian children back to school

PISCO, Peru, 8 February 2008 -- In the earthquake that shook the Peruvian provinces of Ica, Pisco and Chincha in August 2007, one of the most evident disasters was the destruction of 635 of the region's schools. School activities were paralyzed and one of UNICEF's main objectives became helping the affected children and adolescents get back to school immediately. To help accomplish this, 'temporary classrooms' such as tents and classrooms made of straw matting were installed. These spaces are quick to install and, most important, offer safe spaces for children to get back to their studies. To read the full story, visit: http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/peru_42797.html
