Flimsy "Legit" Ballot Challenges Dot MN Recount
[LESS INFO] 23 VIEWS | ADDED 06:00:07 12/02/10
While there have been thousands of ballot challenges disallowed in Minnesota's election recount because they are "frivolous". There have been more than 700 "legitimate" challenges that unless they are withdrawn will be reviewed by the State Canvassing Board. ;
Some of these challenges are likely to be dismissed very quickly such as the first one in this video. It's a ballot the election judge filled in when the original ballot wouldn't run through the machine. It's being challenged not because it's a duplicate, but because the election judge didn't fill in the ovals entirely.

A Vote For Bob Dylan Is Cause For Challenge
[LESS INFO] 5 VIEWS | ADDED 05:36:04 12/02/10
Singer Bob Dylan probably has no interest in elective office, even in his home state of Minnesota. But one of his fans wrote in Dylan's name for several offices. Republican candidate for Governor of Minnesota Tom Emmer's campaign is challenging that ballot claiming the name "Bob Dylan" is an identifying mark…meaning Bob Dylan wrote his name on the ballot which is not allowed in Minnesota. And therefore the vote on the other side of the ballot for Emmer's Democratic opponent Mark Dayton should not be counted.
The challenge is one of several thousand RepublicanTom Emmer's campaign has made during the recount of the Minnesota Governor's race. Most of those challenges have been disallowed as "frivolous". This "Dylan" ballot will actually get further review by the State's Canvassing Board later this month. Emmer trails Dayton by about 9,000 votes out of 2.1 million cast.

Tempers Flare In Minnesota Recount
[LESS INFO] 4 VIEWS | ADDED 03:46:34 12/02/10
Video by Craig Stellmacher Finding themselves understaffed and behind, Republicans are starting to show the stress of a Governor’s race recount that isn’t going their way. Wednesday, that stress erupted into a loud verbal discussion between Tony Trimble who is a lawyer for Republican Tom Emmer and Hennepin County Elections Manager Rachel Smith. The rules say the Emmer campaign and the Mark Dayton campaign each may have two observers at the table when the ballots are counted out in piles of 25. The trouble is the Emmer campaign has fewer volunteers than the Dayton campaign and doesn’t always have two people available to watch the counting. The shortage of volunteers may be one of the reasons lawyer Trimble at one point threatened to sue if Hennepin County added more tables to do the counting. Hennepin County wanted to add the tables because thousands of frivolous ballot challenges from the Emmer campaign has slowed the counting. After Trimble’s threat, the County backed off from adding the tables. Trimble and another Republican observer accused one of the Hennepin County election workers of being “partisan” for pointing out that a ballot was a clear vote for one candidate or another. It is the job of the election judges to “call” the ballot for one candidate or the other before counting begins.

Chicago peace activists Joe Iosbaker and Stephanie Weiner recount the Sept. 24 FBI raid on their home in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood. The FBI simultaneously raided the homes of over a dozen peace activists in the Twin Cities. Iosbaker and Weiner attest that the FBI actions were taken in order to disrupt domestic peace activities as much as they were directed against solidarity actions with Palestine and Columbia, because unlike the Minneapolis peace activists, Iosbaker and Weiner have not traveled to Palestine or Columbia.

Hennepin County Elections Manager Rachel Smith says she has heard Republican recount leaders urging their workers to challenge more ballots in Minnesota's Gubernatorial recount. She says the challenges made by Republican Tom Emmer's campaign have been "a bit unnecessary". Over the past two days in Hennepin County alone there have been close to 1,000 ballot challenges that were ruled "frivolous". All but a handful of those frivolous challenges were made by the Emmer campaign. She showed the press some of those challenged ballots which included one with a fully filled in oval for Mark Dayton. The Emmer campaign challenged the ballot questioning the "voter intent".

Emmer Challenges “Beyond Frivolous” Says Dayton Campaign
[LESS INFO] 183 VIEWS | ADDED 01:07:16 12/01/10
Mark Dayton continues to widen his lead in the recount of the Minnesota Governor’s race. Both the Secretary of State and the Dayton campaign show that Dayton is picking up more votes than Tom Emmer. Dayton Recount Director Ken Martin says as of 1:30 PM today Dayton had increased his lead by 205 votes. Unlike the Secretary of State count, the Dayton campaign’s campaign’s total is based on the “call at the table” by an election judge before any challenges. In the 2008 recount, the “call at the table” proved to be the most accurate predictor of the final total once the State Canvassing Board dealt with ballot challenges.

Senator Klobuchar Disappoints Anti-Torture Group

Members of, "Stop Torture at the Top," met with Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar on November 24. The meeting had been requested about a year ago and it was preceded by a meeting with her staff the week before.
This group, an amalgamation of many Twin Cities peace groups, delivered a plea for the senator as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, intervene with the Dept of Justice to pursue and prosecute the ; crimes of torture committed by senior government officials including George W. Bush. Bush, currently on a book tour, has stated publiclly that he authorized torture, specifically waterboarding. The group cited issues of international law, the fact that torture is a crime that transcends national borders and that prosecution for torture may be initiated by any prosecutor in any country. There is also the documented fact that torture trickles down, those trained in torture transfer that skill to other jobs. It takes many years to remove the effect of torture practice as has been demonstrated in several Latin America countries. The price of US refusal to prosecute the war crime of torture is a serious loss national prestige and the moral high ground. It is also an excuse for increased terrorist activity. Senator Klobuchar declined to make any major commitment to act; she did promise to consider sending a written question to the Attorney General after the next review meeting by the Judiciary Committee. She did not want to spend any of her limited direct time with this issue.

During this holiday season, President Obama used his weekly address to give thanks for the blessings of America, in particular that distinctly American impulse to give something of ourselves and do what is required to make tomorrow better than today. With that sense of determination and sacrifice, America has built a powerful economy, stood against tyranny, fought for equality, and connected the globe with our own science and imagination. And by working together as one people – as Americans -- we can overcome the challenges currently facing our nation.
