The hour-long show features sets by the bands and interviews with Hosts Gina Miller and Record Producer Dan Workman.
MoTel Aviv formed in Austin in January 2009. Drawing on influences such as the Smiths, the Clash, David Bowie, and New Order, the band creates their own brand of infectious, high-energy post-punk-pop. In a city awash with talent, Motel Aviv have managed stand out, garnering high praise for their “polished,” “stylish” songwriting and “vivacious” performances.
Continuing their rise, MoTel Aviv opened for Everclear last month, and is in Houston for the first of three shows before returning home to mix their debut LP, which is being recorded at Satellite Studios in Austin.
Deniz Tek is a rock n’ roll journeyman best known as the guitarist for Radio Birdman during the mid 1970s. After growing up outside of Detroit, Tek moved to Austrialia and started the influential garage-punk band when he was only 18. Since then he’s continued to make music under with scores of other lineups and as a solo artist.
Love Street is composed of first-call session musicians who pass through SugarHill’s doors on a regular basis. Kenny played for many years with the great Jaco Pastorius; Paul is one of Houston’s premier arrangers and keyboardists; Mark was a member of Heart, Spirit, Canned Heat, and other well-known bands; and Tyson … well Tyson just rocks.

The Energy and Weird Party are the musical guests. Community representative and audience of one is photographer, musician and perpetual music fan Mark Brubaker.
The hour-long show features sets by the band recorded in SugarHill's historic Studio A and interviews with record producer Dan Workman and Host Gina Miller.
One of Houston’s hottest hardcore punk bands, the Energy describe themselves as “weird fuckers playing noisy punk rock music with lyrics about violence and animals doing human activities.” The band are no strangers to the hardcore scene; their members have previously been involved in No Talk, Black Congress, and the Born Liars (to name but a few), and bassist Chris Ryan has recorded countless other acts at Dead City Sound.
After a string of demos and singles, the band released their first LP earlier this year. Unceremoniously titled The Energy’s First Record, the album has already sold out for independent label Team Science. With reviewers praising the release as “legitimately boundary-pushing” the Energy are poised to light up the city.
Weird Party are up-and-comers in the Houston music scene. Formed in December 2009, the band is planning to release two twelve-inch EPs in the coming year. Weird Party’s sound has been christened “spit rock,” but the band themselves prefer “throw-up rock.” Confused? Just imagine your half-witted brother got his fingers stuck in the fretboard of your broken, $25 guitar. ; But with the addition of numerous scuzz distortion devices and a certain joi-de-vivre, they manage to sound like the best unrecorded band from your favorite musical era. To (mis)quote Screamin Jay Hawkins, “Weird Party doesn’t care if you want them; they’re YOURS RIGHT NOW!”

Born a full turn from the white picket fences of America, Craig Kinsey was raised on Southern lore from a family of moon shiners. His teenage years were spent train hopping, walking, and driving across the country in search of “the old days… Guthrie, Kerouac, and John Lee Hooker.” This seeking out the marrow of life led him into the great silence of a monastery and out again into music’s center stage. His album, The Burdener starts off with a circus— a raucous, grinding New Orleans sound, then blending tunes which weave a tapestry of barroom piano, brass, strings and gypsy frontier styled swing.

Roky Moon and BOLT! are a rock n roll/glam rock band. Winners of the 2009 Houston Press Music Award for Best New Act the band has opened for national acts such as Sugar and Gold and Dax Riggs. In late 2009 Roky Moon and BOLT! were featured in the play "Life is Happy and Sad" which focused on the early life and works of Daniel Johnston. Roky Moon and BOLT! are recording their first full length record and completing a live rock opera that will debut in 2011 by Catastrophic Theater at DiverseWorks! Studio. Melanie Covington is half of the soul duo, Covington - Richmond Band. She is a session vocalist from Saint Louis, MO, who at the age of 4, was asked to sit in with the Temptations. Her small frame duplicated dance steps, face gestures and sang loud enough to be felt & heard during a charity performance. Active in church and musical functions, she became the drum section leader in high school. Her all female band Kymistry was selected to tour with Roy Ayers and she's opened for The Braxtons, Back Street Boys, Glenn Jones and Johnnie Taylor. Ms. Covington performs 3 nights a week at The Skybar in Houston. She is currently featured as the lead singer for the show Get Out! Of the Closet! and can be heard on various television campaigns.

Prog-math rockers Motion Turns It On & the Dublin-based Autumn Owls are the musical guests. Community guest and 'audience of one' is Ruben Dominguez, a founding member of rock group Toho Ehio and former freelance journalist for local rag Thorazine. Currently, he works as an entertainment anchor at KRIV-TV Fox 26 and was instrumental in the Fox Rocks local band segment among other music coverage. With this episode LFSH welcomes producer Gina Miller as the new co-host alongside award-winning record producer, Dan Workman.
Autumn Owls are a four-piece post rock-meets-folk band from Dublin. The band was one of the 10 selected by Hot Press to represent Ireland in the New York Tisch School of Arts 2007 Music Video Project. The song selected, went on to feature on Dave Fanning's television program The Last Broadcast. After two EP releases, they began work with acclaimed producer Ciaran Bradshaw of Westland Studios. The band was nominated in the newcomer category "Hope for 2009 Award" in the Meteor Irish Music Awards. At the time of this filming Autumn Owls are currently recording their debut album and on tour in the U.S.
Behind every great band lies a story waiting to be told. For Houston-based Motion Turns It On, a local trio that roller coaster ride began, as stories of this nature often do, with misguided youth living in the suburbs. Manufactured living leads young ones to the kind of restlessness that occasionally sparks dormant creativity. MTIO formed in 2004 and the original members have transformed their vision into something truly cutting edge. Their stunning debut E.P. entitled Rima garnered rave reviews from Houston Calling to Amplifier Magazine. Now MTIO is a seasoned band with a new album entitled Kaledioscopic Equinox and a remarkable live performance that’s been called “schizophrenic, kinetic and controlled frenzy.”

The Grooveline Horns are an internationally known three-man horn section including Carlos Sosa (sax), Fernando Castillo (trumpet) and Reggie Watkins (trombone). The band has won several accolades including the 2005 Latin Grammy Winner with La Mafia Best Groupera Album, Austin Chronicle Reader's Poll Best Horn Section seven times and has played with everyone from Jason Mraz, Willie Nelson, Dave Matthews to Ozomatli and The Meters.
Zach Balch is a singer/songwriter from Levelland who admits, "If West Texas is in your blood, songwriting arrives like rows of cotton and Bible-belt Choruses". Born on Elvis' 50th, a graduate of Buddy Holly's alma mater, and the grandson of a lifelong pianist and music educator, Zach's training includes South Plains College where he studied guitar, and a short stay in the Jazz Program at the University of North Texas, where he was a vocal major.

She?s been highlighting local and regional talent on her radio program RadioACTIVE, along with co-host Phil Schawe, for six years and was the one co-creators of The SugarHill Sessions. The hour-long show features performances recorded live in SugarHill's historic Studio A and interviews with Hosts Dan Workman and Rosa Guerrero.
Suzanna Choffel is a singer/songwriter from Austin whose unique sound has been described as ?equal parts Beat poetry, smoky soul grooves and indie-pop eccentricity. Think Feist meets Erykah Badu?. In Spring 2009, Suzanna won the "Best Indie Band" prize at the Austin Music Awards SXSW as well as 2nd Place in the "AAA" category of the prestigious International Songwriting Competition. Previously, Suzanna was selected by The State Of Texas to represent contemporary music in Texas On Tour, a countrywide traveling show promoting Texas tourism.
The Umbrella Man is a Gulf Coast combo fronted by esteemed bassist, Nick Gaitan. Nick has won Houston Press Music Awards "Best Bassist" title from 2004 - 2008 consecutively.
Additionally, he also plays and tours with Country music legend Billy Joe Shaver, who recently recorded "I've Found my Weakness in You", composed by Gaitan. The group performs "a gumbo of styles" including Country, Rockabilly, Swamp pop and Conjunto and are currently working on their debut album.

Texas songwriter Tody Castillo's sound has been compared to Tom Petty, Ron Sexsmith, Ryan Adams and Rufus Wainwright with the vocal stylings of Jeff Buckley, Fran Healy and Jeff Tweedy. When Steve Earle first heard Tody's music while shopping for producers for his critically acclaimed album Townes, its claimed that one listen gave Earle enough confidence to hire Houston producer Steve Christensen for the project. Castillo's new album Windhorse was born out of personal tragedy, yet teeming with hope.
According to the Houston Press, Winter Wallace is a phenomenally genteel indie band that has a certain Ingrid Michaelson/Cat Power quality to them, with similarities stretching beyond similar song format or quirky clothing accessories or soft colors on their MySpace pages: they are legitimately talented. Their first EP, entitled Lisa, was produced by Dan Workman.

Something Fierce (Dirtnap Records) started with a love for groups like The Clash, mining their punk/powerpop foundation. Their first full-length, Come For The Bastards, was released in the Summer of 2006 with Frenchie Smith of Young Heart Attack producing. The album served as an introduction to their mix of speedy punk with indie rock sensibilities, such as the dual vocals of Steven Garcia and Niki Sevven. Over the last four years, has released two seven inch records and one full-length, "There Are No Answers". Sara Cress of the Houston Chronicle wrote, "Something Fierce has always been on a mission: say it fast, say it loud, make it fun and make it mean something."
King Khan and Mark "BBQ" Sultan had collaborated as members of the Montreal-based Spaceshits from 1995-1999. During a European tour, Blacksnake (King Khan?s moniker) opted to remain in Germany and the group disbanded. Sultan went on to start another popular Montreal-based band, Les Sexareenos, before venturing off on his own as a one-man band under the pseudonym BBQ. As BBQ, Sultan re-established contact with Khan, playing alongside his new band, King Khan & the Shrines. The two began writing songs and playing them live at sporadic shows around Germany and Spain.

Female Demand and Runaway Sun are the musical guests. Audience of One is J.R. Cohen, general manager of the Forbes and NY Times acclaimed lounge/coffee bar The Coffee Groundz.

Female Demand is a duo that takes a different approach to the term ‘band’. Their music broadcasts a complex, intricate wave of sound to be received by the ears. Their minimalist style of rock is both ambient and reminiscent of an instrumental Devo.
Runaway Sun's debut EP garnered them a Best Blues nomination in the 2009 Houston Press Music Awards and a slot at an official showcase at SXSW playing alongside GRAMMY nominee Diane Birch. The band moonlights as one of Houston's top do-gooders - playing a myriad of local charity events, including Walk Now for Autism and Empty Bowls Houston. Runaway Sun recently released their 10-song LP The Bridge.

Singer/songwriter Johnny Bush's set includes his huge hit "Whiskey River. Roy Head performs his #2 rock hit from 1965 "Treat Her Right" in the same studio where it was recorded 44 years ago...a great SugarHill moment...not without surprises.
On this episode, SugarHill chief engineer Andy Bradley celebrates his 25th year at the studio. Andy interviews guests along with host and award-winning record producer, Dan Workman. Community guest and 'audience of one' is Andrew Dansby. Dansby is a Kentucky native and former New York resident who survived stints in the film and book publishing industry. He's currently an entertainment columnist for the Houston Chronicle, where he spends most of his time thinking and writing about music.
