HK's National Education Course Continues to Draw Protests
Hong Kong's controversial government-backed national education course continues to fuel protests. On Wednesday, thousands rallied outside the government headquarters, loudly making their points heard. Dressed in black, those opposed to the course are demanding it be pulled. A smaller group of protestors, dressed in white, said the course was a good idea. Police were on hand to keep the two camps separated. The demonstration remained peaceful, with protestors making speeches and singing songs. The heatedly debated course was planned to be mandatory for primary school children when school started last month. Hong Kong's government said the National Education Course would teach kids about China's history and instill nationalism. But with teaching references containing materials that praised the Communist Party while criticizing the US democratic system, opponents say the course was a veiled attempt to "brainwash" students. Outrage over the course drew thousands of protestors in September, and eventually forced Hong Kong authorities to back down. Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying announced the course would not be mandatory, but stopped short at heeding calls to pull the course completely. Opponents, many of whom are young students or graduates, say they do not trust Leung Chun-ying. Leung is seen as a handpicked leader by Beijing, and is working to bring Hong Kong under communist rule. Greece Brought to Standstill by Nationwide Strike
Greek public and private sector workers go on a nationwide 24-hour strike shutting down transport, offices, shops, schools and services. A new general strike is occurring in Greece, as for the second time in three weeks, workers protest austerity measures required for the bailout agreements. The country was brought to a standstill. Public transport stopped, schools closed, and boats remained moored at docks. Taxi drivers, hospital staff, teachers, and air traffic controllers were among the many groups to join the 24-hour strike. Unions are hoping to send the message to the European Union and the International Monetary Fund that the spending cuts they demand are too much for Greeks to withstand. [Petros, Civil Servant]: "I join strikes and I believe that these austerity measures are too much for the Greek people to bear, and I think they should have a say in things." Greece is preparing to cut 11.5 billion euros of cuts to receive another 31.5 billion in aid, part of a deal for a 130 billion euro bailout. However, with the country expected to run out of money next month, it has little choice but to push for the relief package. During the protests, there were some clashes with police in Athens; parts of Styntagma Square were closed off in preparation for rallies at the Greek Parliament. However, as of now, the Square has reopened to traffic. Max von Sydow has received France's Legion of Honor award - its highest distinction awarded to non-natives. The 83-year old Swedish actor has starred in more than 140 films and has been nominated for an Oscar two times - most recently for his supporting role in "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close." Prince William Pays Tribute To Ex-Offender Charity
Britain's Prince William attends a charity dinner for the St Giles Trust, an organization which helps ex-offenders. Full Story: Prince William, Duke of Cambridge on Wednesday attended a function for the St Giles Trust, a charity which helps ex-offenders break the cycle of crime. Prince William is the patron of the trust, and on the 50th anniversary of the organization, he praised their good work. [Prince William, Duke of Cambridge]: "Before I visited Saint Giles Trust the first time in 2009 I wondered how such a relatively small organization could make such a difference. Within minutes of meeting the volunteers and staff and observing their relationship with their clients I had my answer. Ladies and Gentlemen, the people of St Giles trust, who give their lives helping others. People like Junior, who will speak to us later, are beyond praise. They understand what their clients are going through because in many cases, they have been there themselves. They know what its like to have no hope, no path to a better life. Its because of this that they also know how to restore hope and unlock a better future for those that they help." The event was arranged by the October Club, and held at the Savoy hotel in London. The October Club, originally founded by a small group of city workers, each year hold a fund-raising dinner to support a selected charity. This year it was the St Giles Trust. Lance Armstrong Doping Scandal - Fall Out Continues
Lance Armstrong steps down from his charity role and is dropped by sponsors Nike. Full Story: The fall out continues over the doping scandal that has engulfed former cycling champion Lance Armstrong. On Wednesday Armstrong stepped down as chairman of the Livestrong cancer support charity he founded. On the same day the disgraced cyclist was dropped by his sponsors Nike. [Katherine McLane, Livestrong Foundation, Communications Vice President]: "There have been a lot of controversies in the news recently about issues from the cycling world and Lance as this organization's founder has such a deep, deep emotional and even financial investment in the success of this organization. His family donated six and a half million dollars to this organization and he's very committed to seeing it succeed. The last thing he wanted was this organization to be effected in any way negatively by that controversy. So he decided that the best course was for him to step down as chairman." Armstrong founded the Lance Armstrong Foundation in 1997, not long after being diagnosed with testicular cancer. The organization launched the Livestrong brand in 2003 as it widened its cancer patient-support services. The foundation is now known by both names. Revenue for the year to date has already passed $30 million, and does not seem to have been affected by the scandal. But PR guru Mike Paul thinks the charity's reputation has already been hurt. "Popemobiles" on Display in Vatican City
Two centuries of "Popemobiles" - vehicles used by Popes - go on display in Vatican City. Celebrities and diplomats travel in some of the most expensive and flashy cars, but nothing can quite compare to the rides of Popes and Cardinals. And if you have to see it to believe it, some of the most ornate and decorated vehicles are on display at the Vatican Museums. The most extravagant? Pope Leo XII's Belina di Gran Gala carriage, built in 1826 - complete with a wooden throne and gold leaf detail. But Pope Gregory XVI later added gold angels holding a tiara and keys to symbolize papal power as he rolled through 19th century Rome. This jeep-style vehicle by Fiat from the 1970's is considered to be the first "Popemobile," and was used by Pope Paul VI, so he could be seen by the crowds during the jubilee year. The "Popemobile" became a household name during the papacy of Pope John Paul II, but its open-air design posed a threat in 1981 when he was shot and nearly killed by a Turkish gunman, who the Pope later forgave. The vehicles, which date from 1825 to present day, are all part of an updated exhibit representing two centuries of papal travel. Marie Antoinette Slippers Sell for 50000 Euros
A pair of green silk slippers once belonging to French Queen Marie-Antoinette sold for 50000 euros at a Parisian auction house on Wednesday. The auction was a trove of some 350 treasures belonging to various French royal families, but the slippers were by far the best sellers. They were sold to a telephone bidder for five times the expected price of ten-thousand euros. One tourist who stumbled upon the auction by accident, was shocked at how much people would spend on slippers. [Frederique Bellon-Dutertre, Tourist]: "It shows a bit of a contrast with the life in the exterior and the poverty we see. And then we see these sums of money and objects going for pretty significant sums. And this contrast disturbs me a little." But an art collector who attended the auction as a bidder said their historical significance makes them invaluable. [Franck Baulme, Art Collector]: "The price should be high due to the scarcity of these kinds of objects." The slippers were given as a gift to the queen's manservant who passed them on to his descendants. The winning bidder also received a certificate of authenticity from the family. US Servicemen Arrested for Rape in Okinawa
Police say two US servicemen have been arrested in Japan's southern Okinawa Prefecture on suspicion of raping a Japanese woman. Full story: Two US servicemen have been arrested in Japan's southern island of Okinawa on suspicion of raping a Japanese woman, police said on Wednesday. The case comes at a time when Okinawan residents are upset with the Japanese government. The Japanese government allowed a US hybrid aircraft onto the island despite safety concerns to Okinawan residents. The US ambassador to Japan says the US government is extremely concerned by the incident and supports investigations. [John Roos, US Ambassador to Japan]: "This is a very serious matter and it is the full intent of the United States Government to provide full and complete and unequivocal cooperation to the Japanese authorities in their investigation of this matter." The two US servicemen are suspected of raping the woman early on Tuesday morning in central Okinawa. Japanese authorities say one of the men has confessed to the rape but the other denies being involved. The case will likely be handled under Japan's judicial system. [Osamu Fujimura, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary]: "We've made our views clear to US Ambassador Roos. In addition, both the Okinawan representative of the Defense Ministry and our regional liaison with the US have told the commander of the US forces in Japan that the incident is completely unacceptable. Air Canada passenger plane helps find missing solo yachtsman who was low on fuel and had a broken mast. Full story: A solo yachtsman on board an 11-metre yacht was lost at sea with a broken mast and low fuel supply. He was spotted and subsequently rescued on Wednesday when an Air Canada Boeing 777 flew over the site. The Australian Maritime and Safety Authority (AMSA) began searching for the yacht on Tuesday morning after an emergency beacon was activated. An Air Canada flight from Vancouver to Sydney was asked by AMSA to fly over the area where the emergency beacon was and assess the situation. Captain Andrew Robertson said he called on the passengers to help look for the vessel. [Andrew Robertson, Captain of Air Canada Boeing 777]: "As we approached the area I made a PA announcement to the passengers, you know, please help us look for, if you see anything because it's very difficult to find anything down, 5000 feet (0.94 miles), about a mile above the water." From the altitude the airplane was flying, the search was like a needle in a haystack. [Andrew Robertson, Captain of Air Canada Boeing 777]: "Almost immediately, as we closed in on the area, the first officer said well, I see what I think is the boat, so we proceeded right over it, it was almost exactly where they told us it would be." The plane made a second pass and the sailor was spotted on deck. [Andrew Robertson, Captain of Canada Air Boeing 777]: "We were happy when we found the boat the first time and we ... Next Media's Taiwan Exit Raises Free Press Concerns
There are fears that Taiwan's media may become less robust, after a Hong Kong-based China critic announced he will sell his press holdings in Taiwan. Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai owns Next Media, which is critical of China's communist authorities. Next Media is known for its animated takes on political and celebrity scandals. It publishes Apple Daily newspaper, Next Magazine in Taiwan and runs an internet TV station. Lai has tried, unsuccessfully, to expand its broadcasting operations in Taiwan, which has been pursuing closer ties with the mainland under the presidency of Ma Ying-jeou. Lai will now sell its Taiwan media outlets to local business man Jeffrey Koo for around $600 million. Koo's family has several business interests in the mainland. Next Media's exit from Taiwan comes amidst growing concerns that local media is losing independency, and withholding criticisms of the Chinese regime in exchange for gaining access to the Chinese market. Greenpeace Israel Say 'STOP' to Shale Oil Pilot Project
The Eilla Valley in Israel has a rich history. In a Biblical story, as a young shepherd, King David is said to have faced the terrifying giant Goliath in this place, and had defeated the hulk by using only a sling and a stone. Burial caves in the valley testify to the ancient history of the Israeli people. It's a pastoral place, recently acclaimed for the wine produced from its vineyards. And recent discoveries have shown that the valley is rich also in natural resources. Experts say, about 400 feet underground sits a huge deposit of shale oil, which could eventually produce more oil than Saudi Arabia. Chief geologist for Israel Energy Initiatives%mdashor IEI%mdashYuval Bartov, says they have knowledge of there being around 250-billion barrels of oil, rivaling Saudi Arabia's reserves of 264-billion barrels. The Israeli Ministry of Water and Energy recently licensed the IEI to explore the valley's reserves and pilot petroleum production. But there are oppositions. Headed by Greenpeace, green organizations have set up a "climate camp" in the Eilla Valley, protesting the idea of using the shale oil, which they say creates danger to both man and the environment. In a recent protest, hundreds of activists and local residents gathered together, forming the letters, "STOP". Chen Guangcheng's Brother Sues Police for "Wrecking" Home
The eldest brother of blind Chinese rights lawyer Chen Guangcheng says he's suing authorities in Shandong province for breaking into his home, Reuters reported today. Chen Guangfu says on April 27th, police and officials in his village illegally scaled the walls into his home, and wrecked it, after discovering Chen Guangcheng had escaped after 19 months of house arrest. During the invasion, his son, Chen Kegui, slashed three policemen, and has been charged with intentional wounding. Police have sent his case to the Shandong prosecutor. Chen Guangcheng sparked a diplomatic row after he sought refuge at the US Embassy. He is now living in New York with his wife and two children, but has continued to raise concerns that Chinese authorities would mistreat his family back home. It's unclear whether the local court will take up Chen Guangfu's case, as Chinese courts have a history of refusing to hear cases filed by dissidents and their families.
