First native American saint to be canonized on Sunday for healing a boy fighting flesh eating bacteria. Full Story: Catholics in and around the US community of Fonda, New York, are celebrating this weekend. Tomorrow, the town's Catholic heroine Kateri Tekakwit will become the first Native American saint. Although she died 300 years ago at just 24, the church contends her spirit is still capable of miracles. According to the Vatican, she healed a five-year-old boy struck by deadly flesh eating bacteria in 2006 thanks to the family's prayers. [Father David White]: "And his family prayed specifically to Kateri and whatever the details of it were the infection just dried up and healed and that doesn't happen medically." The saint-to be was born in 1656 to a Mohawk father and an Algonquin-Christian mother. When she was just four, a small pox epidemic left her badly scarred and nearly blind, but her injuries didn't stop her from devoting herself to Christianity. Pilgrims believe the waters at Kateri's shrine still have healing powers. [Joe Fondano, Kateri Devotee]: "My friend who lives in Watervliet now, his sister received that water and she had this type of cancer and she was diagnosed and it completely went away." The community plans to hold a special ceremony on Sunday to recognize Kateri's sainthood. The incident had occurred around 11:30 am, when Melo was with the elephant during a routine training session in the enclosure, in which young elephants learn to wash themselves. Two other keepers helped move the elephant away and paramedics moved in, later taking Melo to the Royal North Shore Hospital, where she remains in critical but stable condition. They worked on her for about five minutes and then her heart... she started breathing again on her own. She has pretty major chest injuries at the moment." The zoo is investigating the incident. But EU officials said that eventually six-thousand lenders would gradually come under its supervision. Banks receiving state aid will come first, followed by the larger cross-border institutions. An 11-week-old panda cub is is learning to walk this week at his vet exam at the San Diego Zoo. The panda cub gets put on the floor by his caretakers and tries to crawl forward on all fours. Just when he looks like he will start walking, his back legs give out and he rolls onto his side. [PK Robbins, Senior Vet at San Diego Zoo]: "I would say he's making progress. He's kind of at that awkward toddler stage where some limbs are working better than others. Certainly the front legs want to get up and go but the back legs sort of got a little bit left behind. But he's definitely learning, he's getting those skill sets that he needs and he's a pretty active little dude." The panda cub squeaks and rolls around the floor in his attempts to be mobile. He is expected to be able to walk on all four legs in just a few weeks. It will still be at least a few more months before he is able enough to venture into the panda exhibit. Only 1600 giant pandas are believed to exist in the wild, and the species is primarily threatened by habitat loss. Four students have been killed and 44 others injured in a bus crash on Thursday in central China when a bus ran off a 100ft cliff. The bus which was almost full, was taking the students to sit for an exam, according to state-run Xinhua News Agency. The students were aged between 17 and 21. Two students died at the scene and another two died later in hospital. Eight people, including the bus driver were seriously injured. The teacher, who was accompanying them, remains in a coma. The preliminary report said careless driving was the cause of the accident, but investigations are continuing, Xinhua reported. But the generals, given the task of defeating them, grew strong and saw an opportunity to seize the throne for themselves. The three key players in this quest for control over China were Cao Cao%mdashwho served as Captain of Cavalry in suppressing the Yellow Turbans, Liu Bei a distant relative of the Han imperial family, and Sun Quan who had been known by the title, 'the general who attacks barbarians.' In 205 AD, Cao Cao became the dictator of northern China. Liu Beis stronghold was in the area around what is modern day Sichuan province, while Sun Quan was based in the southeast. Cao Cao had the ambition to conquer all of China. He started to march his army south. Outnumbered by Cao Caos large army, Sun Quan and Liu Bei formed an alliance and their forces of 50000 soldiers met Cao Caos 200000 at a place called the Red Cliff on the Yangtze River in the winter of 208 AD. This battle established the power structure of the divided China for the next 50 years. The Battle of the Red Cliff started on the river. Cao Cao, his men tired and ill from the march south, were forced to retreat to the northern bank of the river. Liu Beis military strategist, Zhuge Liang and Sun Quans general, Zhou Yu noted that Cao Caos boats are moored tightly together%mdashpossibly to stop his men getting seasick. In August last year, Ren was sentenced to reeducation through labor for negative online comments he made about now disgraced politician, Bo Xilai. Ren's father submitted a court appeal, which was heard last Wednesday. Two days later, the People's Daily said being sentenced for critical statements made online was, "outdated and goes against today's freedom of speech and rule of law." According to Tang Baiqiao, head of the New York based Democracy Academy of China, the Communist Party strategically allowed the publication of such editorials. [Tang Baiqiao, Head Teacher, Democracy Academy of China]: "This is a relatively easy issue to understand. After all, the CCP said they want to engage in some political reform. They want to take this case as an opportunity to show they sincerely want political reform, because the pressure is coming from civilians." There have been soaring demands from the public to reform the labor camp system. In August a children's book author Zheng Yuanjie created an online poll about labor camps. The WTO decision may be a timely victory for the President, who has been fending off accusations from his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, that he is too soft on the Chinese regime.
