Mayanmar Welcomes Obama's Planned Visit
He's making headlines around the world, but here in Myanmar the focus is on US President Barack Obama for more than just his re-election. Obama will be the first US leader to visit the country, giving a strong endorsement of its fragile democratic transition after half a century of military rule. This businessman says it's good for the economy and for his country's standing in the international community. The visit will give Obama a chance to meet Myanmar's President Thein Sein and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who spent years in detention under the military. The trip comes despite recent sectarian violence in western Myanmar that's caused international concern. Myanmar grew close to China during decades of isolation, reinforced by Western sanctions over its poor human rights record, but is now seeking to expand relations with the West. Obama's tour of Southeast Asia later this month will also take in Thailand and Cambodia. Demands of Ordinary Citizens During Party Congress
As Communist Party elites gather for the 18th Party Congress in Beijing to discuss the challenges facing the communist regime, ordinary citizens are finding ways to raise issues that concern them the most. Grassroots groups, from both inside and outside of China, have published a number of open letters online. US-based All Girls Allowed, a group that opposes the Chinese regime's One-Child policy, issued a letter to the delegates of the Party Congress. Chai Ling, who founded the group, listed cases of forced abortion victims, including a woman whose pregnancy was terminated at six months. Chai called on communist leaders to end the one-child policy, and, quote "respond to this violence against women." Inside China, a former health official published a letter on behalf of 300000 AIDS victims who contracted the disease following botched blood transfusion in Henan province. Chen Bingzhong singled out current Vice Premier Li Keqiang, who was governor of Henan during the outbreak. [Chen Bingzhong, Former Director, China Health Education Research Institute] "Li Keqiang needs to take responsibility for the Henan AIDS issue. He covered up the outbreak that led to 300000 being affected. At least 100000 victims died and none of their appeals to high authorities produced any results." In Shandong province, advocates for victims of judicial abuse have also appealed. Syrian Opposition Groups Meet In Doha To Discuss Greater Unity
Syrian opposition groups meet in Doha to thrash out a consensus that will provide a more respected platform on the international stage. Full Story: Talks in Doha continued well into Friday morning as Syria's various opposition groups attempt to thrash out some kind of consensus. The meeting, held in Qatar and supported by the United States and other Western nations, is seen as essential in preventing the divisions, which have so far prevented the ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. It is hoped that a new inclusive Syrian National Initiative, will play the same role as the Transitional National Council, that eventually overthrow Muammar Gaddafi in Libya last year. [Burhan Ghalyoun, Former Head of Syrian National Council]: "Unifying the (Syrian) opposition is not a concession being presented for certain countries or for the friends of Syria; unifying the opposition is the duty of all opposition factions and we are heading towards unifying the opposition regardless of the reaction or demands by some countries." If the talks conclude successfully, the Syrian National Initiative can position itself as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people, seek international recognition, and expect greater military support. The location of the meeting underlines Qatar's central role in the effort to end Assad's rule. The Gulf state also played a significant role in funding the Libyan revolt to overthrow Gaddafi. Meanwhile in Syria, President Assad vows to "live or die" in ... From: NTDTV Views: 49 4 ratings Time: 01:36 More in News & Politics

Woolly Mammoth Skeleton Stuns Archaeologists
Impeccably preserved woolly mammoth skeleton, as well as flint spearheads, found near Paris. Full Story: French archaeologists finished up the excavation of an impeccably preserved woolly mammoth skeleton on Thursday at a quarry 50 km east of Paris. Scientists working at the excavation site applied a silicon cast to the mammoth remains before they removed it. The nearly complete mammoth skeleton, only the fifth such specimen found on French soil, is causing a stir in the archaeological community not only for its completeness -- a rare occurrence in itself -- but also for the flint spearheads found amongst the remains. The discovery will allow archaeologists and scientists to better understand early humans' relationship with the colossal mammal. Nicknamed Helmut by the excavation team, the mammoth's skeleton is estimated to date from 125000 to 200000 years ago. Full Story: Noor Inayat Khan was born into Indian royalty and became a published poet and an accomplished musician. During World War II, she risked her life to work behind enemy lines as a radio operator in German-occupied France. She was betrayed and arrested, and despite repeated torture, refused to reveal any information. Noor Inayat Khan was shot in Dachau concentration camp in 1944. A memorial to her bravery was unveiled in London on Thursday. [Shrabani Basu, Noor Inayat Khan Memorial Trust]: "Sixty-nine years ago, a young woman walked out of a house on Taviton Street just behind this square. She said goodbye to her mother and her sister, unable to tell them that she would never see them again. Noor Inayat Khan would become the first woman radio operator to be dropped behind enemy lines. She would pay the ultimate price for her bravery. Today, in the presence of Your Royal Highness, we have filled this square to remember a heroine of the war. A young woman of Indian origin who unhesitatingly gave her life in the fight against fascism." Britain's Princess Anne unveiled the statue. Prayers, Drums And Police Escorts -- Exam Time In Seoul
Exam time in Seoul, South Korea, is a little different from most other places... Full Story: It's the most stressful day in their lives so far... college entrance exams for high school seniors in South Korea. They study for the College Scholastic Aptitude Test for over a year... and their results will determine which college or university they get into. To alleviate stress on the day of the test, younger students cheer them on as they enter the building. For some, the pressure is just too great. For others, the only way to make it on time is with a police escort. The tests carry so much weight in Korean society, the entire city gets in on the action. The stock exchange and government offices open an hour later. Citywide traffic controls and anti-noise measures are put into place... including a ban on airplanes from taking off or landing so students can hear better during the oral portion of the exam. With pressure like this, you need a miracle. Well ahead of test day, shrines and churches are packed with parents praying for their children. This woman says she's been here everyday for nearly two months praying for good luck for her daughter. A silver lining? If students aren't happy with their results, they can retake the test as many times as they like. Chinese Stocks Fall Amidst 18th Party Congress
Chinese regime leader Hu Jintao has promised to double the country's GDP by 2020. It's a bold promise for the world's second largest economy that's reeling from the effects of internal demand problems and a slowing global economy. Hu's promise did not appear to boost confidence for the stock market. On Friday, China's stocks fell for a fifth day, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index closing with its longest losing streak in four months. The Shanghai Composite Index fell for five days this week, closing at 2069.07 on Friday, recording a drop of 2.3% In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng China Enterprise index, which measures Chinese companies trading there, dropped by 0.9% on Friday. One funds manager based in Shanghai told Bloomberg news that investors are still waiting for positive news from the 18th Party Congress, and there have not been any exciting policy prospects so far. Economist Professor Chen Xiaonong agrees. [Professor Chen Xiaonong, Economist] "Stocks have been falling after the 18th Party Congress, one factor is that no one has seen anything to be excited about, also, the Congress has not given any hints about which investments could be profitable. Or, frankly, the so called Chinese commentators on the stock market have not come up with any new stories." Former economics professor at Beijing University, Xia Yeliang, says the Chinese regime's plan to increase state-planning of the economy will hurt the stock market. Skull Fragment of Saint Matthew Revealed
A fragment of the skull of Apostle Matthew is placed on display in a Greek-Orthodox church in Cairo, during celebrations of the Church's 80th anniversary. Full Story: A fragment of the skull of Saint Matthew was placed on display in a Greek-Orthodox church in Cairo on Thursday. It marks the first time in recent memory that the skull fragment from one of the twelve apostles has been displayed. Saint Matthew was also one of the four Evangelists, the authors of the four Gospel accounts in the new testament. The fragment, which members claim is from the author of the first Gospel, would be one of the many pieces of his remains, scattered around the world. It is believed that his body rests in Italy. Theodoros II, the church's patriarch, led a two-hour service at the Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria. He said that Saint Matthew was killed in Ethiopia by "non-believers." [Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria]: "This is a part of the skull belonging to a great Evangelist. These fragments of the saint are considered a great blessing to us Orthodox Christians, which is why we place our hands on it as such, kiss it with our lips, light a flame, and take our blessings from it." The Church in Cairo was founded in 1931 and celebrations for its anniversary are to continue for five days. Wang Lijun Expelled from the Communist Party
The Chinese regime has expelled former Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun from the Communist Party, Chinese media reported on Thursday. The Chongqing Daily newspaper reports that the decision came from the Communist Party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and was approved by central authorities. It alleged Wang had committed serious violations of Party discipline. Wang has also been dismissed from his official positions. Though his expulsion comes weeks after his trial, the timing is not unusual. NTD Senior China Analyst, Heng He, says that, quote, "Before or after the legal process, the suspect or the criminal would be expelled from the party and fired from his government position." Wang was sentenced on September 24th to 15 years in prison for abuse of power, defection and taking bribes. In addition to those crimes, Thursday's media reports alleged that Wang had accepted expensive items from others and abused his position to engage in inappropriate relations with a number of women. Wang Lijun set off a political scandal in February after he fled to the US Consulate in the city of Chengdu. The US State department is being urged to release any information Wang may have provided during his stay about the Chinese regime's alleged involvement in the forced organ harvesting of prisoners of conscience, including Falun Gong adherents. Disgraced Bo Xilai's "Chongqing Model" Officially Renounced
The current leader of Chongqing, Zhang Dejiang, gave an audience to reporters in which he addressed the issue of Bo Xilai's legacy. His predecessor's continued popularity among hardline Maoists, as well as the poor people he claimed to be helping, have been challenging questions for the Communist Party central authorities. Zhang was blunt about the Party's current position on what Bo had promoted as the "Chongqing Model" of development with greater equality: He simply said that the model "did not exist." In contrast, he said, the policy of economic reform begun under former Party leader Deng Xiaoping would continue, "The policy of reform and opening up for Chongqing will not change." With Bo Xilai's rise to national prominence, there had been much media attention to his "Chongqing Model", which mostly involved incurring massive local government debt to finance populist projects, while maintaining tight control of society and stifling dissent. Now, though, the Party seems to be saying that the whole affair was a misguided betrayal of Deng Xiaoping's reformist legacy. Bo had promoted other glamorously-named policies during his time in office, including his "beat the black" anti-crime movement, accused of massive human rights abuses, and also his "red songs" movement to revive popular Communist culture. This was accused by many of being a revival of Cultural Revolution era extremism, where Mao Zedong was treated as a god-like figure and no differing opinions were tolerated ... Gaza Cops Bag "Rock" the Fugitive Crocodile
Google comes to the rescue, as Gaza's police force use the internet for a crash course in crocodile hunting. Full story: Police say a crocodile on the run from a Gaza zoo for the past 18 months has finally been captured. The 6 foot-long reptile was spotted several weeks ago in sewage pools in the northern Gaza Strip, and villagers complained he had been eating their livestock. Police called in fishermen, who then netted the crocodile on Monday. [Sameh Al Sultan, Policeman]: "This crocodile behind me ran away from the zoo in 2010, nearly two years ago when it was small around (40-50 cm) long." An internet crash-course in croc-capture helped put the offending reptile behind bars. [Sameh Al Sultan, Policeman]: "We don't have dart guns and tools for hunting crocodiles or even previous knowledge in dealing with crocodiles but we, with the 'help of God', searched on the internet about crocodiles and how to hunt them and also we asked expert hunters to help us." The fugitive was returned to the zoo and reunited with four other crocodiles. The owners of the zoo said the crocodile had grown considerably since his escape. They've also decided to name him "Sakher", or Rock, as a tribute to his survival. Cold Feet At Giant Panda Breeding Center
It's been a long journey for a panda called Fuhu, and it may be too early to tell whether he's happy to be back in the land of his ancestors. On Thursday afternoon, this Austrian born panda was flown to the Bifengxia Giant Panda Breeding and Research Center in Ya'an City, Sichuan Province, the homeland to all giant pandas. Maybe it was the crowds waving disembodied panda heads or maybe it was just cold feet before meeting the female pandas at the breeding center, but Fuhu didn't seem too happy to be there. It took breeders two hours to get him out of his cage and into the quarantine room, luring him with his favorite foods%mdashan apple. Fuhu%mdashwhose name means "lucky tiger"%mdashhas been put in a hut next to his brother, Fulong. He was also born in Austria but made the trip to China in November 2009.
