World's LONGEST Cake
Geneva pastry maker produces the world's longest "millefeuille" cake, 1221 metres long. Full Story: Volunteers and professionals in Geneva on Sunday smashed the world record for the longest "millefeuille" cake. [Anna Orford, Guinness World Records, adjudicator]: "Well the current world record for the longest "millefeuille" belongs to Belgium, it was in 1992, and that measures 1037.25 meters, so that's a lot of "millefeuille". Today they're attempting the Guinness World Record and they're gonna try 1200 (meters) of "millefeuille"." Spearheading the world record attempt was Geneva baker and pastry maker Gilles Desplanches. [Gilles Desplanches, Pastry Maker and "Millefeuille" Initiator]: "To try and quantify the "Millefeuille", I think we've spent some 1000 working hours producing (the parts for the cake). And to give you an idea, we're going to produce 1200 bags of cream, and in this "millefeuille", that will make 1200 meters, there are three layers of biscuit, so we've had to make 3600 meters of biscuit." The goal is to raise money for a breast cancer association in Switzerland. [Angela Grezet, Swiss Breast Cancer Association ASAP/RCS]: "Every centimeter of "millefeuille" costs 1 Swiss Franc (approx $1,05), so we're going to sell pieces of 50 centimeters each, so we hope to raise the maximum money, but it's also great to be able to gather this many people around this cause." The Mayan Museum of Cancun is Mexico's newest home for priceless artifacts belonging to the mysterious ancient civilization. [Adrian Velazquez, National Institute of Anthropology and History]: "It is a museum that has an archaeological collection that would be very difficult for another museum to have. It has the most impressive collection of archaeology in Quintana Roo (state) that you could see in one place. It has a very important display of Mayan archaeology from different regions." Featuring ancient skeletal remains, intricate artwork and decorative pottery, the museum covers various eras of the Maya. These date as far back as 350 BCE to 1550 ACE. The state-of-the-art museum is nestled between Cancun's famed archaeological zones and features three exhibition rooms dedicated to all things Maya. [Adrian Velazquez, National Institute of Anthropology & History]: "Cancun is an area that has three archaeological zones: El Rey, San Miguelito and Meco. It was important to give it some context that would be an invitation to all domestic and international visitors so that, after their museum visit, they would be interested in visiting archaeological zones and also on the other hand, to reach out to the local population so that this museum can be theirs and this pre-Hispanic ... China Focus - Why Did China Announce a New Organ Donation System?
China claims to carry out ten thousand human organ transplants each year. But unlike the US and Europe, China has no national organ donation system. That's been the subject of a lot of scrutiny: Where do the organs come from? Well last month China's Ministry of Health announced a new program. It's called "Management for the Acquisition and Allocation of Organs." Supposedly, it's meant to set up a national distribution system for organs. But there's more to this than meets the eye%mdashincluding numbers that don't add up, and behind it all, deeply hidden political maneuvering. From: NTDTV Views: 32 2 ratings Time: 13:11 More in Shows

Monet's Water Lilies Painting Fetches Nearly $44 Million at Christie's Auction
A painting from Claude Monet's famed water lily series featuring green lily pads sells for over US $43 million at Christie's Impressionist and Modern Art auction in New York. Full story: A Monet water lilies painting sold for nearly 43.8-million US dollars on Wednesday, and a Kandinsky fetched 23-million, as Christie's kicked off the auction season with a sale that saw many mid-level works failing to find buyers. "Nympheas"%mdashone of Monet's iconic water lilies from 1905%mdashexecuted during his years at Giverny, had been estimated to sell for 30-million to 50-million dollars, and just managed its middle range. Proceeds from the Monet sale will benefit a private prep school in Tarrytown, New York. Wassily Kandinsky's "Studie fur Improvisation 8" meanwhile, hit the low end of its 20-million to 30-million dollar estimate, setting a new auction record for the Russian artist. [Brooke Lampley, Head of Impressionist and Modern Art, Christie's]: "It's a radical piece from the beginning of really, modernism. It's a crucible piece. And it was a very important piece to be offering, one that we hoped and expected would set a new world record price." But 30 percent of the 69 works on offer failed to sell, when bids didn't reach the client's secret reserve price. The auction took in a total of just under 205-million US dollars, far from the pre-sale estimate of 210 to 315-million. Christie's nonetheless says it was pleased with the results. Giraffe Crosses Country on a Truck
Kitoto, a two-year-old giraffe, has presented an unusual sight, travelling 400 km through Australia to a new home at a Sydney zoo. Full Story: A giraffe named Kitoto arrived at her new home at a Sydney zoo on Thursday, after journeying through the Australian countryside on a truck. The animal had outgrown her enclosure at the Western Plains Zoo and needed more headroom. She's also now old enough to start mixing with other giraffes and visitors. Her journey to the loftier new living quarters was a sure head turner. [Onlooker]: "It's exciting, a giraffe going down the main street." "Kitoto" means 'precious child' in Swahili and she seems to be treated as such, having her move postponed because of rain. [Tracy Roberts, Zookeeper]: "Giraffes are a bit like cats in that they really don't like getting wet." But a dry day and 249 miles (400 kilometres) later, Kitoto wowed the crowds. [Tracy Roberts, Zookeeper]: "It's often the first animal you remember when you go to the zoo as a little child, so I think they just have a really special place in people's hearts." Kitoto will soon be introduced to Taronga Zoo's three other giraffes. New York Struggles with Power Outages and Gas Rationing
The struggle goes on in New York as gas rationing begins and power outages continue on Long Island after Superstorm Sandy. Full Story: Gas rationing begins in New York Friday. Nearly two weeks after Superstorm Sandy hit the US East Coast, New Yorkers are lining up for gas. Based on license plates ending in odd or even numbers, drivers are allowed to buy gasoline on alternating days. Tempers have been frayed as gasoline has been in short supply. [Victor Vergara, New York Resident]: "The fist fight right here. It was like Rocky 7 or something. I was like whoa. This is my second time in line, so..." On Long Island, more than 161000 people are still without power. People are waiting for answers. [Barbara Steinberg, Long Island Resident]: "They hang up on you. They don't answer it. I called LIPA [Long Island Power Authority]. They said we can't do anything for you. You have to get an inspector. Can't get an inspector. This is the worst thing in my life. I've never had anything like this. It's horrible." Contractors working in the area struggle to restore power. People continue to ask when the power will come back. Some contractors simply have signs on their trucks that say "I don't know." Taiwan Team Engineers Fluorescent Fish
A new breed of pink fluorescent fish attracts visitors at Taiwan's annual aqua pet expo. And some are willing to pay a hefty price to own this one-of-a-kind fish. Full story: Taiwan's latest genetically engineered fluorescent fish are the latest trend in aquarium fashion. They're being showcased at the Taiwan International Aquarium Expo in Taipei. [Alice Lin, Visitor]: "They are so beautiful, the pink color is very pretty, it is romantic and elegant. They look like angels descending from heaven." The new fish genotypes of cichlid and angelfish, nicknamed "pink princess" and "pink angel", took more than three years to research and develop. [Ou Mei-ju, Jy Lin Trading Co., Ltd]: "When we first started the transgenic process, it seemed successful under the microscope, but as they grow up we realized the genes could not be inherited, so we had to start all over again, we kept on trying. Then when the fluorescent genes were successfully passed on, we thought the color was not as pink as we wanted. It required our propagation techniques to eventually make them appear the pink color now." The new breed glows in daylight, unlike its previous generations, whose fluorescent shine was only visible under ultraviolet lamps. The fish will be available for the market in two years and while each fish costs up to nearly $3500 USD, some believe there will be a demand from fish lovers. 7 Navy SEALs Reprimanded Over Medal of Honor:Warfighter
Seven members of the United States Navy SEALs are reprimanded for disclosing classified material in the making of a videogame. Full story: 7 members of an elite US Navy SEAL team, including one who participated in the raid that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, have been reprimanded for disclosing classified material while helping produce a videogame, officials said on Thursday. All 7 of the special operations forces who were punished were members of the elite SEAL Team 6, according to CBS News, which first reported the reprimands. CBS says the 7 worked for 2 days this spring and summer as paid consultants on the videogame. A defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said other members of the team are still under investigation in connection with the game. 2 senior chief special operators and 5 chief special operators received a reprimand on Wednesday for their involvement in the production of a videogame called "Medal of Honor: Warfighter", released by gamemaker Electronic Arts Inc. All 7 were punished in an administrative proceeding for disclosing classified information and misusing command gear while working with the gamemakers, who advertise that the videogame is more accurate because of the help they had from special operations forces. A defense official said all Pentagon employees are required to follow Defense Department guidance on outside employment, a measure put into place to ensure "the highest ethical behavior". 11000 Refugees Flee Syria in 24 Hours
About 11000 Syrian refugees flee Syria in 24 hours, making a total of 408000 registered or assisted refugees in the region, the United Nations refugee agency said on Friday. Full story: On Friday, the UN refugee agency reported roughly 11 thousand Syrian refugees have fled to three neighboring countries. The exodus happened in the past 24 hours, and they say it's the largest to happen in quite some time. Most refugees crossing into Turkey come from either Aleppo, Idlib, or northern areas. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees says it indicates a significant crisis. [Panos Moumtzis, UNHCR Regional Coordinator for Syria]: "On the refugee front, in the last 24 hours alone we have received over 11000 Syrian refugees that fled to the neighboring countries. 9000 that fled into Turkey, 1000 in Jordan and 1000 into Lebanon, which brings the total number registered or assisted refugees in the region to over 408000 Syrian refugees. This is the highest number we have received so far, and I would say the arrival of last 24 hours is one of highest we've had for quite some time." The Commissioner's comments came after aid agencies held a Syria Humanitarian Forum aimed at increasing aid to Syria. [Radhouane Nouicer, UN Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria]: "There is no humanitarian solution to a humanitarian crisis, the solution is in the hands of the politicians, because it is exclusively and essentially of political nature." Communist Party Clings On to Power Through Mao Zedong
In the face of mounting domestic and international challenges after 6 decades in power, the Chinese Communist Party continues to hold on to Marxist, Leninist and Maoist ideologies. Despite announcing an amendment to the Party constitution prior to the 18th Party Congress, it's now clear that the Party has no plans to change course. Political and economic commentator Lin Baohua says the Communist regime has never been ready for reform. He believes that unless Mao Zedong is criticized, China will not see political reform. But if it abandoned Mao Zedong, the CCP's legitimacy will come into question. [Lin Baohua, Political and Economic Commentator]: "Mao Zedong helped the Communist Party grab power. If it discards Mao, it's like giving up its power. If the Party declares Mao a criminal, it will mean that the regime is also a rogue regime. So even if the Party wants to abandon Mao and his theories, it can only do it on the sly rather than openly. Otherwise, it'll challenge its own legitimacy to rule." Chinese citizens have also questioned the relevance of Maoist ideologies. Mr Zhang from Fujian province believes rhetoric from the Communist Party is only aimed at maintaining its single Party rule. [Mr Zhang, Fujian Netizen] "As far as political interests are concerned, these theories do not exist, they're just a fa%ccedilade. We see the Party's wicked intentions to continue its single party rule. How can this country be run properly if there are no opposition parties?" The question ... Chinese Regime Calls Tibet Probe Demands "Arrogant"
The situation in Tibet is getting worse. In the past six days, seven Tibetans have set themselves on fire, capping a string of 68 incidents of self-immolations since March 2011. According to Tibetan rights groups, at least 56 of those died. But Chinese officials say everything in Tibet is fine. At the same time, they're banning foreign observers from making a human rights probe in the region. The ban comes on the heels of reports of protests in Qinghai province, an area with a large Tibetan population. The Tibet-government-in-exile says thousands of Tibetan students had taken to the streets there after a Tibetan youth died from self-immolation yesterday. Rights group Free Tibet has also confirmed those reports. [Stephanie Brigden, Director, Free Tibet]: "Our serious concern is we're going to see an escalation in very serious cases of human rights violations and this happening without any redress and without the international community knowing what's going on in the country given that international human rights observers, journalists, or embassy officials from European or other non-Chinese countries being able to travel to the area and actually monitor what is going on." But "arrogant," is what, Qiangba Puncog, the chairman of Tibet's rubber stamp regional assembly and appointed by the Chinese regime, has called the demands for independent investigations. His statements came on the sidelines of the 18th Party Congress that is underway in Beijing. [Stephanie Brigden ... From: NTDTV Views: 348 11 ratings Time: 02:28 More in News & Politics
