Brutal Police Crackdown in Coal Plant Protests
It's become a familiar scene across China. Angry protestors clashing with authorities. Riot police turning to tear gas to hold them back. And this time, it's happening in southern China's Hainan Island, and the protest is against pollution. Villagers in Yinggehai want a coal-power plant to be shut down. They've protested against the plant before, but that only temporarily stopped the plant's construction. Last week, after the plant construction resumed, so did the protests. By Sunday night, at least 1000 locals gathered at the nearby government building. Officials called in military and riot police to contain the protest. Violent clashes followed. [Mr Wu, Yinggehai Resident] "They're arresting anyone they see, coming into the village. I'm not sure about the details of injured protesters, but there were a lot of them. Those who were arrested by police were beaten badly, some to the point of spitting out blood." Another resident tells NTD on Monday that authorities are removing signs of the clash, while continuing to monitor villagers. [Mr Ren, Yinggehai Resident] "The riot police had batons and shields, and they used tear gas against us. After last night, they're picking up all the tear gas shells, so you can't see them. They're stopping us from taking photos, a lot of people's phones are being monitored." Locals say dozens of people have been arrested, and security remains tight on Monday. Back in April, Hainan island authorities agreed to stop the construction of a coal ... From: NTDTV Views: 10 0 ratings Time: 01:52 More in News & Politics

Deadly Sinkhole Kills 1 in NW China
It's a testament to the destructive power of water%mdashand the danger of haphazard construction. A broken underground water pipe is the leading suspect in sudden road cave-in in Guyuan City of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. At 8:30 in the morning, while many were crowded in a vegetable market, the ground suddenly opened up, leaving a hole over 150 feet wide and almost 20 feet deep. According to witnesses, a tricycle with its driver and several pedestrians fell in. Rescue crews struggled to pull survivors out, even as still gushing water hampered their efforts. A crane had to be brought in to remove the vehicle. In 10 minutes, four were pulled from the wreckage, including a child. But an hour later, a female resident was discovered. She had not survived. An investigation is underway as to the cause of the accident, but a broken water pipe is believed to have sent gallons of water gushing out, loosening the soil and causing the sinkhole. Huge Ivory Seizure in Hong Kong, Underlines Elephant Threat
The massive seizure on Saturday was worth about $26.7 million Hong Kong dollars, or $3.45 million US dollars. The ivory tusks and ornaments had been smuggled from Africa, and were destined for the mainland Chinese black market. It's one of the largest ever such loads, yet officials and conservationists fear it only scratches the surface of the ongoing illegal trade. In the haul were 1209 ivory tusks, and various ivory ornaments, with around 600 African elephants having been killed to provide the material, according to the South China Morning Post. It has been a year since the last major ivory seizure, and Hong Kong officials claim that it is rare for the illegal goods to move through their ports. Yet it's widely known that China is now the world's primary consumer market for ivory products, which are used for purposes ranging from art to traditional medicine. China's growing presence in Africa has also been seen as a major factor contributing to the trend, as both Chinese and Africans see opportunities to turn a profit in this lucrative, but internationally banned, business venture. CCP To Strengthen One Party Rule: State Media
The recent turmoil at the top of the Chinese regime's leadership has had observers speculating just where the Communist Party is headed. Well today, after a meeting of the Communist Party's Central Committee Politburo, which consists of the top 25 leaders of the Party, it appears the Communist Party plans to only strengthen its single party rule. After the meeting in Beijing, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that attendees have recommended changes to the Party Constitution, which would, quote "promote the Communist Party of China's work and strengthen its construction." The pledge to solidify its rule comes as the authoritarian regime is seeking greater engagement with the rest of world, while contending with a public simmering with discontent over the way they're being ruled. Xinhua reports the Politburo's recommendations would be submitted at the upcoming 18th Party Congress. That congress has been the focal point of a fierce factional infighting within the Communist Party. So far it's claimed the political future of Bo Xilai, and threatens to expose further scandals of other senior Party members. Mud, Sweat and Gears in Lawnmower Grand Prix
Inclement weather and muddy conditions failed to dampen the spirit of lawnmower racers who took part in Sunday's British Grand Prix for Lawnmower Racing. Enthusiastic racers took to a muddy field in southeast England on Sunday for the British Grand Prix for Lawnmower Racing, marking the end of this year's racing season. Considered by many as one of Britain's favorite motor sports and surely one at the most grassroots level, the eccentric event is devoid of the big business sponsors that dominate Formula One. However some argue it is every bit as exciting as the more famous and lucrative race, even in inclement weather. [Daniel Jones, Lawnmower Racer]: "Personally I love it. The wetter the better, but yeah it's a skill to ride in the mud. It's not as fast, and obviously it's a lot harder to control the machine in the wet." The format of the British Grand Prix is a series of sprint races for each of the three categories -- mowers with grass box at the front, sit-on buggy style and large tractor. There are no team orders to be found here, and mowers race on an even 'grass playing field' in that the machines are only allowed minor modifications. The race takes place across two fields in front of a pub where the circuit is split by a hedge. Racing conditions were difficult on Sunday with the ground sodden from several nights of rain. Only the most hardy of mower racers took up the challenge to compete. [Unidentified Lawnmower Racer]: "Well, I've had rolls, I've had spills, a ... Paris Revives River Shipment to Supply Supermarkets
Paris' river Seine is now being revived as a transport route to get food delivered to the capital's supermarkets. Full story: Most boats on Paris' river Seine are today used to ferry tourists around the city. But supermarket chain Franprix has revived the age-old tradition of floating its food supply into the heart of Paris by boat. In a move designed to save costs at a time of rising oil prices and reduce pollution in the city's traffic-clogged streets, the chain has switched from road to water transport. [Herve Montjotin, Managing Director, Norbert Dentressangle Transport]: "It's an operation that enables to reduce the number of vehicles coming daily to Paris, so it's environment-friendly as its reduces the CO2 emission." By stocking 80 of its 350 stores in the French capital by waterway, Franprix saves on logistics costs and cuts fuel consumption by two thirds. Each day some 26 containers of goods are shipped in from the outskirts of Paris, travelling 20 kilometres along the Seine before being unloaded at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. After decades of dominance by motorised vehicles, the move reflects a growing demand for greener, more cost-effective solutions for freight transport. But even river transportation is not immune to logistical problems like unpredictable water levels, so there must always be a Plan B. But as of now, water levels aside, river transportation has many upsides. It'll be a while before traffic jams become a problem: today, only five to 35 ... Van Damme Statue Unveiled by ... Van Damme!
Action movie star Jean-Claude Van Damme was in Brussels on Sunday to inaugurate a life size statue of himself in bronze. Several hundred people gathered outside a shopping mall in the popular district of Anderlecht to attend the ceremony. The inauguration was also attended by Van Damme's parents, a group of young local karate practitioners, Belgium's culture minister Fadila Laanan and Anderlecht's mayor Gaetan Van Goidsenhoven. Van Damme unveiled his statue that was covered with Belgium's national flag, as the country's national anthem was being played. Van Damme said the Belgian public's support came from the message of hope he had been sending ever since the release of his first film, Bloodsport. [Jean-Claude Van Damme, Action Film Star]: "And then suddenly Bloodsport came out, and the American dream starts. Now Belgium is paying me back something but really it's to pay back to the dream. So when people come back here, it is Jean-Claude Van Damme, but it is a guy from the street who believes into something and I want that statue to represent that." Van Damme also recalled his first steps in the American film industry. [Jean-Claude Van Damme, Action Film Star]: "You know, sometimes, you have those clicks before the car starts where it should work like this for people. I felt the click like I knew I was making it... So when I came to America, I felt like I was already a movie star full of fear. Three thousand dollars (USD) in my pocket but I was talking to everybody, I ... ET Wax Figure Unveiled at Madame Tussauds
Madame Tussauds unveils a wax figure of the friendly alien ET to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the film's release. It was in 1982 when director Steven Spielberg's "ET - The Extra-Terrestrial" won over the hearts of audiences the world over. To celebrate thirty years since the film's release Madame Tussauds has unveiled a wax look-alike of the friendly alien on Monday. [Tommy, ET Fan]: "I like the way ET looks, his big eyes." London is one of five locations where the popular children's character will now be sharing the spotlight alongside other silver-screen icons. Despite its age, "ET" is still popular among youngsters today. [Jacob, ET Fan]: "I don't mind [the film being quite old] because it's kind of, it's good in the way it's filmed and -- how it fits together. It's really good. I like watching it." The wax figure took around two months to complete and cost about 80000 USD. Senior sculptor Daniel Woodley re-created ET's wax look-alike mainly using movie stills. [Daniel Woodley, ET Sculptor]: "The size was something that was quite difficult to work out at first. I originally started sculpting him for about a week and I realized he was just looking too small. We got some new reference and very fortunately we got a picture of one of the animatronics from the movie and it had a kind of a ruler in the background so I was able to use that photo to resize him and he kind of ended up being about a third larger than I had originally realized." Fidel Castro declares himself alive and well in Cuba
Fidel Castro dismisses reports that he is dead or near death in an article published on Monday in Cuba's state-run press. The former Cuban leader accused news agencies and enemies of Cuba of spreading "stupidities" about him. He targeted a report from a Spanish newspaper last week that said he had suffered a massive stroke and was in a vegetative state. The article in the Communist Party newspaper Granma included photos which Castro wrote were "proof of what liars they are." Rumors about the 86-year olds health have been swirling in social media in recent weeks. Fidel Castro ruled Cuba for 49 years before resigning in 2008, citing age and infirmity. His younger brother Raul Castro succeeded him as president.
