Tam Tam Montreal is the djembe drumming celebration in Mount Royal park. This all-day outdoor menagerie of drummers, dancers and more occurs every summer Sunday - a party for all to enjoy. The Tam Tam Montréal video can be taken as entertainment, a documentary, or an exploration of the levels of tradtitional African drumming from the profane to the sublime.
The juxtaposition of the music in the main arena with that of the
drumming for the traditional style dancers and the recorded drum
music accompanying the closing slides and text is intentional giving
the video audience a range of experience regarding the use, or as
some may feel, the abuse of the djembe drum which is traditionally a
healing instrument.
Though not a religious service the congregation is attended by many
of the same participants with some in attendance for over 30 years.
From its humble beginnings of a few drumming students this event has
surpassed its original vision of 100 drums on the mountain into a
full blown tourist attraction complete with official municipal
supervision rendering the activities of the fringe into the
mainstream.
While this 4 min. 10 sec. abridged version can be appreciated for its
faster pacing the full the 13 min. 17 sec. edition fills out some
historical background with amusing though truthful anecdotes in the
scrolling text following the video filmed on Aug. 24, 2008.
