Be sure to check out the latest That Post Show. Scott Simmons, of the Edit Blog and Paul Zadie of Imaginary Digital have a long discussion about Hollywood, post production and Avid vs. Final Cut. If you're into post-production, it's a great podcast.
If you've ever wanted to understand a P2 workflow with Avid, head over to Final Cut Pro 2 Avid's site and check out "Using P2 with Avid" - it's a good read and helps walk through the process.
Christopher Holland, who worked for the Austin Film Festival, has published FILM FESTIVAL SECRETS: A HANDBOOK FOR INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS and is giving out free downloads on his site. There's also a book, which costs $24.95 and is available at Amazon and other bookstores.
Want to see some great shot breakdowns for the amazing "Look What's Inside" commercial from Gravity? Well, Motiongrapher has a link and the video is just amazing. We've watched it about a hundred times.
Ever wanted to know how to get better greenscreen footage with the RED camera? Art Adams has a great blog entry at ProVideoCoalition which has the details. It goes into painstaking detail and talks about filters, like the 80D blue filter, as well as tungsten lights and a lot more.
Scott Kirsner has written a book called INVENTING THE MOVIES which discusses the hidden technological history of Hollywood. It's a kind of "brief history of everything Hollywood" and goes through the struggle between innovation and business as usual. It's a great read and can even be purchased digitally from LULU.
Did you see the holographic version of Will.I.Am during the election coverage on CNN? Well, we did and so did fxGuide. They have a good breakdown of how it works and a brief discussion of the history of the technology.
There are so many new movies coming out, it's hard to keep track of them all. Some of our favorites are:
The InterNetrix - A story of Cody "Code" Smith, a lonely man living in cyberspace, a master of virtual reality, who has a virus attack and kill his friend in cyberspace. The villain is Stephen Barrier, the computer mogul and cyberspace serial killer. It's world class cheesy.
Or, if you're into horror, Carnival Evil is the movie for you. Five strangers are abducted and wake up in an abandoned carnival. They are cleverly tortured and killed using only carnival games and rides. There's even a surprise ending!
And, if you want something a little lighter, look for Céline - the story of Céline Dion... discovered at 12 by her manager and future husband, Céline tells the story of plastic surgery, torrid love affairs and internal struggles. It's a classic rags to riches story.
Speaking of movies, VFXWorld lists the top ten holiday movies of 2008, along with a peek into some of their visual effects. We are certainly looking forward to Benjamin Button, the new David Fincher film, as well as Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT (which Stu Maschwitz did work on), but we have to admit, even with Adam Sandler in it, Bedtime Stories looks interesting. And, of course, Twilight is coming out on November 21st, so put that on your calendar.
Have you seen SUBWAY? It's the film shot by Matthew Bennett and shows off the D90 camera. DVXUser has an interview with the filmmaker and a discussion of how the video was put together. It's worth watching and it's worth checking out the rest of Matthew's work.
And, finally, if you liked Monsters, Inc., you'll probably enjoy the Dreamworks "MONSTERS VS ALIENS" trailer. It's a kind of inspired-by-other-films movie directed by Rob Letterman, who also directed Shark Tale. Seth Rogan plays the voice of BOB and Paul Rudd and Hugh Laurie and Reese Witherspoon, along with Kiefer Sutherland and Rainn Wilson and Stephen Colbert do other voices. Dreamworks has not revealed the writers of the movie and they are not on IMDB either. How scandalous...
