In early 2008, two workers—a former Wackenhut security officer from Chicago and a Manor Care nursing home worker from eastern Pennsylvania—traveled to Asia to meet with men and women who did similar work and were employed by the same multinational companies as they are.
Security officer Leroy Johnson boarded a plane for the very first time and traveled to Delhi, India, where he met workers employed by G4S (parent company to Wackenhut), and also visited with Indian labor leaders with whom SEIU has a partnership. Trisha Meishur left the nursing home where she works in Easton, Pa., and traveled to Japan with SEIU leaders to visit nursing homes owned by the multinational company Manor Care.
The experiences were invaluable to Trisha and Leroy, and the trips helped give them an entirely new perspective on both SEIU’s global organizing work and their own jobs. Both journeys were documented in a powerful video, shown to delegates at SEIU's 2008 Convention in Puerto Rico.
