From Neighborhood Beat: Crown Heights . Original air date February 2009. A quintessential renaissance man, Tony “Concep” Brown, is a visionary Brooklyn artist, boasting phenomenal talent as a painter, a dancer and clothing designer. Originally from New Orleans, Concep is the winner of MTV’s 2007 Art Battles, in which he went paint brush to paint brush with several graffiti-style artists, live on MTV. Concep is a fixture on New York’s live art scene, and can b-boy with the best of them with an unmistakable style and grace. He also can paint with a beautifully refined visual flair, and has designed clothing for several popular labels including France’s Marith Francois Girbaud. A running theme in his work is A2+B2= C2, the Pythagorean theorem, which Concep interprets as connoting the past, present and future. “It’s a foundational wedge in my work,” he explains. “If you live too far in the past, you won’t be able to see where you’re going ahead of you. If you live too far in the future, you forget who you once were, in your DNA, what made you.”
Aniko “Lichiban” Szatmari is another multi-faceted Crown Heights-based artist. Her visual style is inventive and whimsical, and she usually paints on the unusual canvas of wood. Along with blogging and doing graphic design, She particularly enjoys painting faces and explains, “The face represents the human experience, beyond just the expression. When I connect with someone I try to capture their beauty, so when they see themselves, everyday their reminded of their inner beauty.”
