I don’t know who was looking forward to the completion of the new Murrieta Public Library more; The library’s patrons or the staff. As a staff, we were excited because we would be moving from a renovated Wells Fargo bank of about 5,000 sqft to a brand new, 25,000 sqft building purposely built with library service in mind. No longer would we have to worry about over-flowing shelves, or a lack of space for programming. As construction began, we begged for the chance to come check out the progress. Finally, the staff was allowed to don hardhats and enter what was to become our new library. The first thing we noticed was that, well, there was a long way to go. Apparently, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and our new library wasn’t going to be either. Everywhere we looked, the construction crew was hard at work, but in spite of this, we saw water on the floor inside the building, we could see through the walls, and some of us had to consult the plans before we could recognize specific features of the building like offices and service desks. At this rate, it felt like our new home was never going to be finished. During our second trip to the new library, however, things were very different. Over the span of just a few weeks, the building was starting to take shape. The Garden of Verses was clearly near completion, the service desks were built and in place and the Heritage room was coming along nicely. Before we knew it, it was time to start placing all of our new materials on the shelves, get rid of all the moving boxes and tidy things up for the grand opening. On March 17, 2007, the brand new Murrieta Public Library officially opened it’s doors to the public. The wait was finally over.
