The hospital opened its doors in February 2009, to provide emergency obstetric care for the most vulnerable women living in the slums of Port-au-Prince. Haiti has the highest rate of maternal mortality in the Western Hemisphere: approximately 630 women die for every 100,000 baby born (compared to 5 per 100,000 in Canada).

Eclampsia, a serious consequence in pregnancy resulting from very high blood pressure, can be fatal to the mother and her baby. Often mothers arrive too late at Maternit? Solidarit?, and their babies do not survive. Poverty is also a major issue affecting the health of babies, who must return home to live in unhygienic conditions in the slums.
