Spic Chic Interview Excerpt 4: The Gift Growing up Nuyorican and making it work and the origins of the book title Spic Chic Excerpt fro
In late 2008, Fly by Night Press (a subsidiary of A Gathering of the Tribes, NYC) opted to publish a compendium of poetry, photos, artwork, comedic essays and short stories dating back to 1975 under the title of Spic Chic ( The Adventuresof the Last Nuyorican ), written by Luis Chaluisan (aka El Extreme). The term "Spic Chic" caused controversy in 1974when it was used on the Bill Boggs mid-day talk show - then aired on Metromedia Channel 5 in NYC (now Fox Television). The offhand remark was offered by Latin NY magazine editors to describe the infusion of vivid colors by Latinoclothes designers then making their mark on NY's fashion world. The latter part of the promotional title ( The Adventures ofthe Last Nuyorican ) is based on a humorous quip in 2005 from Nuyorican poet Papoleto Melendez that “El Extreme representsthe torn page” from the canon of previously published Nuyorican writers who flourished in the 1970’s and ‘80’s. Meanwhile, writer David Henderson (‘Scuse Me While I Kiss The Sky: Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child) is a bit more seriousstating, “I think Spic Chic is strong stuff, right in the Nuyorican tradition. Poems and then stories back into poems that areoften emotionally moving. A self exploration in a non-chronological history consistent in language and point of view, it isclearly a highly personalized work that is successful in the Nuyorican free-style genre and successful in the broader sense aswell.” Both observations are welcomed by Bronx bred author Chaluisan - now residing in Brownsville, Brooklyn - whostates, "I could have chased a traditional path in developing my work but I was having too much manic fun being off-beatand, besides, God had other plans for my creative life." With the publication of “Narrative of a Hybrid” in the Polemic Anthology(1976, Straight Ahead Press – Amherst, Massachusetts) Luis Chaluisan joined the ranks of period Nuyorican writersthat included Pedro Pietri (“Puerto Rican Obituary” 1973), Miguel Pinero (Short Eyes 1973) and Lefty Barretto(Nobody’s Hero 1976). Mentored by Black Panther cultural minister Ed Bullins and later by Young Lord Eddie Figueroa(founder of the “New Rican Village" on the Lower East Side of New York) Chaluisan was invited to join the NY PublicTheater’s emerging playwright unit headed by Crispin Larengeira in the summer of 1977. A chance meeting with magazineeditor-in-chief Soledad Santiago paved the way for Chaluisan to land a job at Latin NY magazine – the nation’s first successfullong term English language monthly publication focusing on Latino (primarily Puerto Rican vis-a-vis Nuyorican)arts and culture. The nineteen year old Chaluisan rose up the ranks from reporter to music editor between 1977-79 under thetutelage of Latin NY publisher Izzy Sanabria which led to his being hired by WCBS network affiliate WFSB (Channel 3) inHartford, Connecticut in June of 1979. For the next seventeen years he worked as a TV investigative reporter, producer, writer and marketing executive for PBS (Bowling Green, Ohio), Telemundo (Tucson, Arizona/Yakima, Washington),WCBS Channel 2 (New York), and News 12 Long Island, along with stints at radio station WGB in Albany among othermainstream media outlets in the US. Upon leaving the news business in 1997 and resettling in Hartford, CT, Chaluisan(once again performing fulltime as “El Extreme”) began to disseminate work he had developed as a musical composer andpoet/essayist with his own indie rock groups dating back to 1982 ( Little Otis and The Upsetters, The Blankets of Doom, LaGran Orquesta El Extreme, Gang Bang Bang, and El Extreme’s Electric Cabaret .). The effort led to his inclusion in theNational Slam Poetry movement as a State Slam Champion for CT. (1998/1999 in Austin, Texas and Chicago, Illinois.) Hissemi-final performance was captured on film by CBS' Sixty Minutes and featured in the news magazine's report on the tenthanniversary of the Slam movement. In 2000 he returned to NYC and set to work on organizing his written work and professional notes describing his media/educational experience which resulted in the off-Broadway play Spic Chic: S.panish P.eople I.n C.ontrol (initially a 2001workshop at the Nuyorican Caf in Manhattan with later runs at the Chelsea Playhouse and Spanish Repertory Theater). The performance at El Repertorio Espanol garnered the attention of producers for the 2004 Biennale Festival in Bonn, Germany where Spic Chic had its European premiere at the Bonn Opera House Theater. In the meantime, Chaluisan was approached by film director Henry Chalfant (“Style Wars”) to contribute both content and interview source material to the award winning documentary “From Mambo to Hip Hop” which aired on PBS in 2006. In 2007, Chaluisan moved to Puerto Rico after the death of his father Federico Chaluisan to spend a year in mourning and soaking in the poetry/writer’s scene at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, PR. With the help of University students and Professor Linda Rodriguez, El Extreme reemerged writing in both English and Spanish. Interview by Sissy Gameche on Channel 57 Time Warner NYC

Bola De Nieve

Bola de Nieve ( Snowball ) was born Ignacio Jacinto Villa ( Guanabacoa , 11 September 1911 – Mexico City , 2 October 1971). He was a successful Cuban singer-pianist and songwriter, whose round, black face earned him the nickname by which he was always known. [ 1 ]
Villa studied at the Mateu Conservatoire of Havana. He worked as a chauffeur and played piano for silent films until his friend Rita Montaner took him on as an accompanist in the early 1930s. After Montaner returned to Cuba, Villa remained in Mexico and developed an original performance style as a pianist and singer. He was an elite rather than a popular figure, a sophisticated cabaret stylist known for ironic patter, subtle musical interpretation, with a repertoire that included songs in French, English, Catalan, Portuguese and Italian. He toured widely in Europe and the Americas, and his friends included Andres Segovia and Pablo Neruda . He was black and gay , self-confident in his personality, and was accepted for what he was: a memorable talent. [ 2 ] [ 3 ]
Bola de Nieve was a fervent supporter of the Castro regime. He was one of the few Cuban homosexuals not to be persecuted, perhaps for this reason. The gay Cuban writer writer Reinaldo Arenas , in his autobiography "Antes que anochezca" ( Before night falls ), said about him: "Era el calesero del Partido comunista" ("He was the coachman of the revolution ").
He was the subject of a 2003 documentary which included interviews with fellow musicians, friends, relatives, and experts. [ 4 ]

Cuco Valoy - SALSA/MERENGUE Dominicana
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 12:28:34 07/29/09
Beginning in the mid-50s, singer, bandleader, composer, arranger and producer Cuco Valoy and his guitarist brother Martn worked as the duo Los Ahijados. They released a series of albums on which they performed songs in a typical Cuban style. In the 70s Valoy organized a 12-piece band which he called both Los Virtuosos and La Tribu. He changed the name to Nueva Tribu when a handful of new members were added in the mid-80s. The personnel included Martn (bass guitar), Cuco's sons Ramn Orlando Valoy (known as Ramn Orlando; piano, arranger, composer) and Marcos Antonio Valoy (trombone), and the magnificent vocalist Henry Garca (who performed with the band between the mid-70s and mid-80s). In the mid-80s Ramn departed to become a bandleader in his own right. The line-up of Cuco's band comprises lead and chorus vocals, rhythm section and a varying frontline of two or three trumpets, one or two saxophones and often one trombone.
Until the mid-80s, Valoy included a mixture of salsa and merengue (the Dominican Republic's major dance form) material on his albums. He then broke from this policy to release a number of albums that were predominantly or entirely devoted to merengue. Many of Cuco's finest tracks were peppered throughout the string of albums he released on the Discolor and Kubaney labels between 1975 and 1983. A number of these songs were later collected on a series of CD compilations. Between 1983 and 1987, Valoy recorded for small companies, including his own CVR label, and then returned to Kubaney in 1988. Some gems also appear on his albums from this mid-80s period, such as on Cuco Valoy Y Su Tribu , Mejor Que Nunca and Con Sabor Del Tropico . Probably his best albums to date (1991), in terms of being consistently strong, are Salsa Con Coco , Tremenda Salsa , Arrollando and Tiza! . 1989's A Peticin Popular ... Salsa marked a significant return to salsa with all the arrangements written by the prolific Isidro Infante. In 1991 Cuco and Ramn were reunited on the J & N/Fuga Records release La Gran Obra Musical De Cuco Valoy .

EVOLUTION As my Reddish Auburn locks turn a silver grey, they become stubborn and thick, Curls doing their own thing going their own way ……. I look into the mirror and the image I see has changed……… My skin once fresh, rosey and tight, shows signs of years past, a road map of Child Bearing, Marriage, Corporate America, Smoking, Chocolate and……….. Sex……. My bones and joints once strong and tall show signs of fragility and weakness The aches and pains are reminders of my youth The days of double dutch, kick the can, red light green light and hot peas and butter……. As if there was anything other……. It’s the Evolution of growth, The gift of life and wisdom, A sign of the traits passed down from one generation to the next ……. It’s the ever changing variety of life The unfolding of a new beginning, a new era, a new chapter in my life…… My body forms a woman’s curves They are full, tight and….. confident……. My moves become better with practice as they should My hips sway seductively on their own Rocking from side to side as I…. walk……. As I walk I feel the woman growing inside of me Taking a risk, no fear, no inhibitions, Enjoying the free spirit of the woman in side of me……. My feminine powers unleashing Past down to me from my mother and grandmother The Powers that all women possess The Power of seduction & femininity The Power that goes misunderstood The Power that men struggle with The Power of which is our birthright…….. The Power of……….. I discovered an important layer of consumption woven in that fabric of life I discovered my growth As a woman, mother and wife I discovered that everything is possible, dreams come true and there is no limit to what I can do……. So as my curls turn a silver grey and become stubborn and thick I embrace ……...my blessings ……...and keep them in place By Mia Roman Hernandez 2008 http://www.newedgecabaret.com/

I think Spic Chic is strong stuff, right in the Nuyorican tradition. Poems and then stories back into poems that are often emotionally moving. A self exploration in a non chronological history consistent in language and point of view it is clearly a highly personalized work that is successful in the Nuyorican free-style genre and successful in the broader sense as well.
