Samsung LED TV Review

Samsung LED TV Review is a post from Chris Pirillo

Some people ask what products I choose to buy myself to use in my home. This television is the latest acquisition of mine, and it’s one that I’m seriously happy with. This gorgeous TV is the Samsung 46″ 1080p LED HDTV . The picture is so much better than what this video will show you. It’s seriously crisp, clear and beautiful. This ultra-slim 46-inch LED HDTV boasts full HD 1080p resolution for the sharpest, smoothest picture possible.
This TV is so much more than just a television. It features Samsung’s new Internet@TV online content service. Developed with Yahoo!, Internet@TV uses either a wired or wireless Ethernet connection to access content onscreen from Yahoo!, Flickr, YouTube and more with the push of a button. The widget-based interface and scrollbar run along the bottom of the screen for easy browsing of the latest programs and content.
Samsung’s 1080p panel uses a new high-speed liquid crystal to cut response time to 4ms. The fast response time dramatically reduces motion blur and shudder. There’s a huge difference between seeing a game, and in seeing every single second of it. That’s where the new Auto Motion Plus 240Hz technology comes into play! All of the action – in every single frame – is analyzed and adjusted… nothing will get past you. This quadruples frame rates from 60 to 240 frames per second. No images are ever repeated to make more frames!
You bet your booty that I bought this little baby for myself, and it’s a purchase I could not regret. The price is actually fairly good, I think. It may seem expensive to you. However, do your research on other televisions of this type. You’re likely going to pay a lot more for them, and I honestly don’t think you’ll get a better experience than you would with this Samsung.

Mustaches Vs Cancer

Mustaches Vs Cancer is a post from Chris Pirillo

Andrea Wojcik was a Gnomedex attendee this past August. She is passionate about causes, and helping to raise money for Pediatric Oncology. She discovered a very cool website that she wanted to talk about during our Gnomedex Show and Tell! Mustaches Vs Cancer is an organization whose motto is: “Kids can’t grow mustaches, and they shouldn’t have cancer, either”.
Even though no child deserves cancer, those who are diagnosed definitely deserve the best care and the best chance at a cure available. We all know that a mustache is the gift that keeps on giving, by creating a more dignified and aesthetically appealing population. But now that killer ’stache can do even more; it can help fight a killer. Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease (non-accidental) among children.
In order to participate, all one needs to do is grow a mustache and take a picture of it at least once a week to post on the website. Donors pick their favorite ’stache face and sponsor the effors. There is a twist, though. If a mustache continue to bring in at least ten dollars a week, then the wearer will have to continue growing it! This will help bring in maximum donations, as well as keep the facial hair growing!
It’s easy to participate, and fun to donate. Be sure to check out Mustaches Vs Cancer and help work towards a cure for childhood cancers.

How to Turn Your TV Into a Media Center is a post from Chris Pirillo

You have content scattered all over your network, I’m sure. The problem is when you want to watch your media on your HDTV. That’s where the FreeAgent Theater + from Seagate comes in handy! It allows you to not only access files from across your network, it also accepts input devices, such as memory cards. It has a variety of inputs, including full 1080p video and Dolby audio! It’s also compatible with the FreeAgent Go portable hard drive. I have to thank Seagate for sending me these products to review. It’s been fun to navigate my way through all of my content.
It’s a good system, and it works. However, it’s not all that easy to use. There are a ton of options. However, the user interface is kind of sluggish at times, and confusing for some people. This can be used with either a Mac or a Windows computer, which is something that I love.
Use the included sync software to copy all of your media to the FreeAgent Go drive. Or, just drag-and-drop your files directly onto the drive. Then, dock the drive into the FreeAgent Theater + HD media player. When connected to your television, it puts your entire media library at your fingertips!
Video quality is excellent. It has HDMI and allows resolutions up to 1080p. h264 video playback is smooth, as well. It supports multiple audio tracks, so you can encode the commentary into the same file as the main audio. It’s also quite responsive, quickly moving into play, fast-forward and other modes.
Get your media onto your tv with a great deal of ease. At only about $120.00, this is definitely an excellent option!

Wide-Angle Camera Lens for the iPhone is a post from Chris Pirillo

Yes, I’m using my iPhone to record this video, instead of my regular video recorder. The reason for this is quite simple. I wanted to show off the OWLE Bubo that was sent to me for review. How cool is this thing?! You can use this to extend the recording capabilities of your iPhone!
You can see that once I clipped the OWLE Bubo to my iPhone, I immediately extended the amount of area that was viewable. I didn’t move my phone at all, honest! That was all done by the OWLE Bubo. It has a lens attached to it that allows you to record videos with a wide-angle lens! It’s also capable of recording macro, as well!
The Bubo comes standard with a hotshoe mount on top for LED lights, four tripod mounts and standard 37mm lens threading so that you can put your own lenses on it, in addition to the lens that the Bubo comes with. The included microphone doesn’t work very well, so I’ll continue using the one I already work with.
If you record video with your iPhone, you’re going to want the OWLE Bubo! Keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming special promotion on this excellent product! We’re working on that right now, and I will update this post as soon as I have the information in the next day or two.

Sony Bloggie Camera Review

Sony Bloggie Camera Review is a post from Chris Pirillo

I’m very glad that Sony sent along the new Bloggie PM5 and CM5 for me to review. I decided to record half of the video using one of these little devices, and half using the other one! They can take still shots, and record in full 1080p format! They support a media stick, or SD media, which is impressive to see. Both cameras are capable of creating very nice YouTube videos!
The great thing about the PM5 is the swivel screen. The camera features a unique lens that swivels up to 270 degrees and, when rotated, instantly powers on the camera so you can start recording video or taking still shots immediately.
SteadyShot image stabilization helps reduce blur caused by camera shake. It boasts 4x Digital zoom that lets you move in close and capture the action in crisp detail. Face Detection technology recognizes faces and optimizes camera settings for both video and still images, so faces are captured more clearly and skin tones look more natural.
Both the PM5 and CM5, much like the Kodak Zi6, suffer from blurring during low-light recording. This is something I’ve repeatedly tried to tell companies about in the past. However, it looks as though not many of them have figured out an answer yet.
Once I switched recording devices to the PM5 , I noticed a few things immediately. The CM5 Bloggie is all about simplicity and ease of use. Simply push the video button to shoot a movie, and the photo button to snap a picture.
The CM5 definitely handles close-up video better than this PM5 does. You can see in the video how far out of focus this thing is, and I’m not happy about that. I definitely recommend the CM5, as long as you are not planning to shoot in low-light situations.

Pogoplug Review (with the FreeAgent Dockstar NAS) is a post from Chris Pirillo

If you’ve been looking for a quick and simple way to access your files (no matter how you’re connected to the Web), you need to look no further! I have to thank Seagate for sending the Seagate FreeAgent DockStar Network Adapter to me to review! I think this is the NAS I’ve been looking for. If you’re in the market for a solution in your home / home office, you might consider Seagate’s options.
Put all of your files in a single location, and access them with any of the computers in your network. Likewise, you can also create a shared space for your friends and family to download content that you designate… and upload their own files!
The Seagate FreeAgent DockStar Network Adapter is a small dock that allows the FreeAgent Go portable drive (and most USB storage devices) to be shared on your local network. You can also access them remotely via the Internet once you activate the service. The drive simply slides into the network adapter, making it easy to remove when you need to take it with you.
All other USB storage devices plug in to one of the two rear-mounted (or one side-mounted) USB ports. It will support up to four devices at once, so you won’t ever run out of storage space. All you have to do is plug in the Ethernet and power cords, and then activate your account online. Once that is done, you will be able to access all of your files in a simple to use web interface!
That same UI will display all of the files on all of the connected drives, as well as the ones your allowed friends (or family!) have added. Navigate through them manually, or search by media type or file name. The Seagate FreeAgent DockStar Network Adapter will show up as a local drive on your computer, so just drag and drop your files into it, just as you would with any other folder.
I’ve definitely FINALLY found the right NAS for use in my own home. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for something like this. You won’t be disappointed!

Super Bowl Sunday Snacks

Super Bowl Sunday Snacks is a post from Chris Pirillo
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
Super Bowl Sunday is famous for something other than just football! It’s also all about the snacks you put out for everyone to nom on during the game! I had to call in an expert, since I’m not a football person myself. Thankfully, my Dad is here visiting and could give me a hand. I’m also not a cook, so I am grateful that Imei was here to lend a hand with food preparation!
Imei helped us come up with five traditional Super Bowl snacks, as well as five not so traditional ones! I’m happy to report that all of them are yummy, and sure to be a big hit with your crowd! Traditional Snacks
* Chips with guacamole dip or 7 layer bean dip – We used Fritos’ Scoops, and got store bought pre-made guacamole. If you want to go with homemade, use ripe avocados, diced red onions, and minced jalapeno pepper. The bean dip was also store bought, but it has refried beans, sour cream, grated cheddar cheese, guacamole, lettuce, and salsa. I would add a top layer of crumbled bacon bits just to make you die and go to heaven!
* Sliders – Mini hamburgers plus 2 or 3 accompanying sauces to choose from! We used grain-fed ground beef, formed into two inch in diameter patties, one inch high, cooked on stove top with light oil until juices run clear. Add some Tomato slices, onion, ketchup, and dijon mustard.
* Nachos – Add melted shredded cheese, ground beef, sliced olives, pepperonchinis. We used whole wheat multi-grain Tostitos brand chips (there’s still corn in it, but less).
* All-beef franks/wursts with sauerkraut – Hebrew all beef franks, boiled five minutes.
* Veggie tray with assorted dips – You can easily buy these at the store, or make up your own! It’s fun doing your own, and choosing the types of veggies and dips you want to have on hand. Non-Traditional Snacks
* California Sushi Roll – You can use crab, but we used cooked wild salmon, which can be mashed with Rooster (hot sauce) or soy with Wasabi mustard; sushi rice with rice vinegar; seaweed on the outside. Roll and slice with sharp knife.
* Prosciutto and Feta cheese – We used store bought Proscuitto, wrapped it with a spoonful of Feta cheese, and sporked it with a toothpick.
* Fondue with apples and bread cubes for dipping – We used Laughing Goat Cheese, melted in the microwave! Add two tablespoons of Martini and Rossi or Vodka. Cut up some Granny Smith apples and cube some thick bread for dipping.
* Tempura chips and fries – Instead of regular batter, use Tempura batter – took some of the salmon and dipped in Tempura batter (buy at store, add water and whisk gently). Cook thoroughly on stovetop. You can also Tempura vegetables, including green beans. This is a great way to get men to eat their vegetables! Use a good vegetable oil without transfats.
* Boiled soybeans encrusted with rock salt – Edamame can be found in the frozen food section. Boil for five minutes and then drain. Add a tablespoon of rock salt.
Thanks to Imei, I know that my Super Bowl snacks will be a huge hit this year! What’s your favorite Super Bowl snack of all time?! What can’t you live without during the big game?

iPad Seen in Apple Store is a post from Chris Pirillo

I can’t believe my local Apple Store had them in stock and was selling them tonight! I took advantage of this OBVIOUS oversight and decided to buy one on the spot.
This is the $499 (16GB) model. As you can see, it runs just fine. Too bad it doesn’t support Adobe Flash .
It’s more than just an oversized iPod Touch , as you can see. It sports a speedy 1Ghz processor, support for wireless “N” networking, a backlit LED screen, will allow you to connect it to an external keyboard, substantially longer battery life, and… a screen that’s perfect for sharing with others.

This was the first Mountain Dew I’ve had in about a decade. It tasted pretty good, IMHO – although I’m not sure my head will ever recover from the experience.
I’m grateful that Pepsi is (at least for now) releasing soft drinks made with cane sugar vs. high-fructose corn syrup. They’re a nice treat every once in a while, but not every day. Diet sodas are just as dangerous for weight management, mind you – artificial sweeteners actually make you more hungry.
Well, suffice it to say, half the bottle of Mountain Dew Throwback was definitely enjoyed!

Does Internet Explorer Suck? is a post from Chris Pirillo
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
We all must browse the web. Unfortunately, the Lynx browser is no longer cutting it. If you don’t remember it, then you are not old like I am. PC PitStop community member James asks if Internet Explorer is safe yet. He’s been waiting to use the newest version, because he’s heard that it has a lot of problems. What are your thoughts on this? Is IE solid, and safe?
The consensus in the chat room was that Internet Explorer is just not there yet. However, the answer is both yes and no. Every browser has its own set of issues. Every browser is as safe as every other web browser… and as safe as the user. There’s really no way to guage if it’s safe enough of not.
Every browser is going to have bugs, and security flaws. If you connect to the Internet, then you have security risks on your hands. If you’ve heard that people have had issues, then by all means, wait if you aren’t ready to upgrade. However, I’ve been using the newest version and haven’t had issues.
You could also use IEs Compatibility Mode , or choose a different browser. You can use any one that you wish, you know. Just because you have that little icon on your desktop doesn’t necessarily mean that you are required to use it. That’s the beauty of the Internet!
My recommendation is always to upgrade to the latest version of any browser. If you arent happy with it, then simply try something else!

Microsoft Security Updates is a post from Chris Pirillo
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
Software is constantly evolving and changing. That’s a good thing, honestly. There are always new and better features being added, along with important security updates in some cases. David from PC PitStop asked about Microsoft Updates. He’s wondering if they’re really necessary, since it takes him so long to download them on his DSL.
At least they released them, right? Even Apple has to have updates. Software needs to be updated because there are exploits out there. Developers don’t see those things until they’re out in the field and have been taken advantage of. Microsoft has found that it’s usually better to release a full chunk up updates all at once, instead of in smaller batches. There are even some vendors who don’t release any updates at all, so you should be glad that Microsoft does!
You do have an option that might help though, David. You can always turn off automatic updates in Windows, and download them manually once per week – or per day! Choose which updates you need, and when to download them. You can easily manage this by opening up Internet Explorer, and going to Tools at the top, and selecting Windows Updates.
If you’re having problems with a particular update, you can always roll it back. However, nine times out of ten it’s better to keep your Windows install up-to-date.

How to Protect Your Hard Drive is a post from Chris Pirillo

There are thousands upon thousands of hard drive enclosures. However, only one of them is both fireproof and waterproof. I have precious video files from the Gnomedex conference on my ioSafe Solo . For the purpose of this video, I completely submerged the hard drive in water, to show you that it truly is waterproof as they claim! Yes – the videos were all still completely intact! I wouldn’t try this at home with any enclosure other than the ioSafe Solo !
I know you’re not likely to submerge your hard drive in a bathtub full of water. However, imagine your business or home office were to become flooded for some reason. Or, heaven forbid, you were to have a fire. Using the ioSafe Solo will guarantee that your data is still safe.
It’s waterproof for up to ten feet of salt water OR fresh water, for up to three days. It can withstand up to 1550 degrees of heat for up to half an hour! It’s only good for one disaster, of course. I have to thank ioSafe for passing this along for me to review. It’s an excellent piece of hardware!
We have a special for you, in case you want to pick up your own ioSafe Solo . You can save 10% when purchasing the ioSafe Solo for yourself!
