Google's take on HTML5
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 02:59:26 11/03/09
Patrick Chanezon, a developer advocate at Google, travels the world studying what developers are doing with the latest Web technologies.
We interviewed Chanezon in the real Building 43, the main building at Google's
headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., about HTML5 and other bleeding-edge technologies.
HTML5 is the next major revision for hypertext markup language.
While work on HTML5 began in 2004 and is not expected to be "completed" for many years, adoption of parts of it into browsers began months ago and has been accelerating.
"HTML5 is essentially a movement around an open standard by many browser vendors to bring capabilities (to) the browser that were available only to desktop apps before," says Chanezon.
Those new capabilities mean that such things as desktop plug-ins that have been required for video and audio will be built into browsers, he says.
"So what happens right now is that developers are going to start building these much richer apps that would have been built for the desktop 20 years ago . . . as Web apps," says Chanezon.
Change also is coming for mobile devices, he says in the video.
"So, I'm interested to see how the mobile world is going to evolve towards this Web development model."

Community building without gatekeepers
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 20:34:32 10/01/09
LeVar Burton is pretty darn close to being a real-life superhero. He encouraged millions of children to ask what Burton calls the great "what if" questions by inspiring their love for reading during his years of involvement with the television show, Reading Rainbow, which ran for 26 years on PBS.
After Gene Roddenberry offered him the role of Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1986, Burton went on to direct episodes for each of the various Star Trek series in production. He has directed more Star Trek episodes than any other former regular cast member. Discovering science fiction when he was a child was a turning point,
and he reveled in sparking youngster's creative imagination, Burton says. "I believe the Star Trek series must have inspired a child or children who watched it to grow up to be a scientist or engineer."
The writer, director, actor and producer stays wired into today’s technology through Twitter, where he has more than 1.3 million followers. He says the
direct, two-way conversation possible with such social media tools as
Twitter is important: "It's without the gatekeepers being in the
middle."
That background made him an ideal participant on a conference panel called “Twitter and celebrity: A match made in heaven?” at the recent 140 | The Twitter Conference LA .
The panel was the concluding session of the first day of the 140 | The Twitter Conference LA organized by The Parnassus Group in Los Angeles, Calif., where the how-tos of Twitter and its tools for business development were discussed. The two-day conference with two dozen panel discussions brought together the worlds of business and celebrity and focused on getting the most out of the real-time Web.
Michael Sean Wright, who handled interviews for building43 at the conference, discusses with Burton the endless possibilities of imagination and inspiration. Wright, the founder of nicefishfilms , is a live documentary film maker, writer and tech nut.

Behind OneRiot, better real-time Twitter search
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 20:26:42 09/28/09
A lot of people use Twitter Search to find and watch real-time events, but Twitter Search isn't very useful after an event is over, Kimbal Musk, founder and CEO of OneRiot, says in this video interview.
OneRiot offers what its developers think is a better real-time search engine.
Musk gives viewers a behind the scenes look at the software, saying that while Google offers what is considered the "right answer," OneRiot offers "A real-time search . . . about the 'right answer' right now."
OneRiot key word searches focus on Twitter and other open services such as YouTube in finding that "right answer right now," he says.
Other social networking services such as Facebook will be added as they "open up," he says.

Hapa Sushi Grill & Sake Bar , in Boulder Colo., has what may be the best sushi in town. When we got there, though, we noticed little displays about its Twitter account on every table. So we wanted to meet Mark Van Grack, the owner, and his social media guy, Dave Rogers of LocalBunny.com , to see what they were doing with Twitter, and what effect it's had on the restaurant's business.

More and more small businesses are using video as a key element on their Web sites, and want to know how to do it better.
So we headed to Hollywood where we visited the crew of the CBS television show "Criminal Minds" on location and talked with the director of photography, Greg St. Johns, whose job is to oversee lighting in setting a mood and to “choreograph the move of the cameras.”
We talked to the cinematographer about how the switch from film to high definition cameras has changed the way he works and took a look at the state-of-the-art equipment.
St. Johns also gave us some good tips about how to use lighting and props to make your videos look more professional.

The Poken is a small, low-power electronic gadget targeting the “Web 2.0 Twitter crowd” that is intended to replace the paper business card, says Stephane Doutriaux, founder and CEO of Poken.
Profile information, including a person's social networks, is stored on the device and can be transferred to a similar device by touching one unit to another. That contact information later can be transferred from the USB device to a person's Poken account accessed through a computer's web browser.
The devices are available individually or in 12-packs from the Poken website or from a network of online vendors.
There are a wide variety of “looks” to choose from. One of the most popular, according to one U.S. reseller site is called NinjaPoken .

Sync up with open source Funambol
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 16:55:32 07/28/09
Funambol is a mobile open source sync project that Rackspace has adapted for its own use on servers while making development contributions back to the parent project.
The software application clients sync smart and feature phones with the “Internet cloud, email systems, personal computers and other systems,” says the web site for the project which has headquarters in Redwood City, Calif.
In this video, Mike Taczak, a developer and a team lead on Rackspace's Webmail Apps Team, talks about using Funambol and shares some tips.
For those curious about the Funambol name, the project web site explains it this way:
“We often get asked about the pronunciation and meaning of our name. Funambol (pronounced Fu-NOM-bol) is derived from the Latin words funis (rope) and ambulare (walking), meaning a tightrope walker. Just as a tightrope walker must be strong, brave, disciplined and nimble, Funambol continuously balances the needs of our open source community and our commercial customers.”

Talking Facebook Business

Facebook has put together a number of ideas and the widgets to go with them to make the social media site useful for businesses. Mike Vernal manages the engineering team for the Facebook Platform, so he has a unique view of how Facebook can be used by business. The theory, says Vernal, is that people can use friends as a “social filter” to find what is good or interesting or useful about a product or business. “I think the world will move towards a place where you can use your friends (online) to discover things,” a process mirroring what happens offline, he says.

Facebook connect: how to and why
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 17:48:42 07/17/09
Facebook Connect provides a relatively simple way for people to sign in to Facebook-linked business web sites using their Facebook ID. Once they are logged in, people can comment on blogs, products and services, and they can share information with their Facebook friends through their newsfeed. Facebook says some businesses have seen registration and participation on their web sites triple after adding Facebook Connect. In this interview with Rober Scoble, Luke Shepard, a Facebook software engineer, shows how to set up the Facebook Connect comment option for web site or blog owners.

John Kao, an internationally-recognized expert on innovation, thinks 2010 will see some of the most promising developments on the web go mainstream and be accessible for Main Street businesses.
In this video, Robert Scoble talks to Kao, the San Francisco strategist and author of
Innovation Nation: How America Is Losing Its Innovation Edge, Why It Matters, and What We Can Do to Get It Back . Kao, who spent a few months in the late 1960s playing keyboards with the band, Mothers of Invention, wraps the segment with an impromptu performance of Brazilian jazz.
