Getting Quick-n-Dirty with Jennifer Leggio

I am a big fan of the weekly Quick-n-Dirty podcast ( @quickndirty ) hosted by Jennifer Leggio ( @mediaphyter ), who also blogs about Social Business at ZDNet , and Aaron Strout ( @aaronstrout ), so when I ran into Jennifer at a recent tweetup I asked her if she’d be interested in swinging by for a “quick-n-dirty” interview to talk about the podcast series. To my delight she said yes.

If you don’t have plans tonight and want to mingle with a few friendly folks who are active in Silicon Valley’s social media scene, then head on over to Cielo Lounge atop Hotel Valencia at Santana Row in San Jose. It starts at 5:30 and if it’s anything like last month’s tweetup it will go well into the night.
At last month’s Silicon Valley Tweetup , which was the second one to take place, we met up with Michael Brito of Intel. Brito started the monthly Silicon Valley Tweetups in July and it’s been quite a success. In our video interview with him, he shares with us why he started it and how it’s a great way to bring people together and at the same time support a good cause -- the Anissa Lopez Foundation and George Mark Children’s House .
Tonight’s Silicon Valley Tweetup is sponsored by Lithium Technologies . Also, our very own Brian Solis will be on hand tonight for a book signing of his latest book “ Putting the Public Back in Public Relations ,” which was co-authored with Deirdre Breakenridge . Copies of the book will be on sale and the profits will be donated to the Anissa Lopez Foundation and George Mark Children’s House.

IBM Looking to Ride the Cloud and Deliver "Smart Work"
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 17:11:04 04/10/09
Post and video by Miiko Mentz
Today concludes our video coverage of Web 2.0 Expo with a final interview with IBM. Of course IBM is certainly not the first company you think of when you think Web 2.0, but like last year's Web 2.0 Expo, the show was filled with many startups and sprinkled with a few big players. This year those big players were IBM, Microsoft, Salesforce.com and a few others. And much of the buzz was around 'doing more with less' through collaboration and cloud computing.
Cloud computing is all the rage these days and IBM is trying to get in on the action. At the end of last month, IBM announced an initiative dubbed "Open Cloud Manifesto" that calls for open standards to promote cloud computing. There's a host of companies backing the manifesto, but oddly, the pioneers and leaders in cloud computing are absent.
According to Reuters , Amazon is reviewing the plan, Google has decided not to support it and Salesforce.com hasn't publicly spoken on the matter yet. Also, Microsoft has publicly criticized IBM's efforts.
On a lighter note, Bubblicious Reporter Jolie O'Dell spoke with Kathy M. Mandelstein, marketing director at IBM Software Group, IBM Rational Software and WW Programs, Events and Web, about cloud computing, LotusLive, and Rational AppScan. IBM's overall theme at Web 2.0 Expo was "Smart Work" and helping people and businesses to work smarter through collaboration and collective intelligence.

Topix Releases New Ways for Businesses to Connect Locally with Customers

At Web 2.0 Expo last week, Bubblicious Reporter Jolie O'Dell spoke with Topix CEO Chris Tolles. Topix is a leading Internet news community that connects people on a local level to the news and events in their towns and cities, and it provides a place for people to discuss the news that matters most to them. With newspaper advertising shrinking and becoming less effective, local businesses are turning to other sources, such as Topix, to connect with customers.
Topix is becoming a great avenue for businesses that are dependent on local customers, such as restaurants, salons and spas, car dealerships, attorneys, doctors and other neighborhood-type businesses. However, many of these small business owners aren't well versed in SEO practices or search advertising, but need to advertise online to drive customers into their stores, restaurants and local offices.
At Web 2.0 Expo last week, Tolles talked about Topix's newly released services that are helping these types of businesses connect to a local audience in a local context.

Web 2.0 Expo 2009 Delivers on its "Power of Less" Theme
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 20:30:54 04/05/09
By Miiko Mentz (Special thanks to Jolie O'Dell , Bubblicious on-camera reporter)
Web 2.0 Expo 2009 wrapped on Friday afternoon after delivering four days of presentations and demonstrations mostly focused on being agile in uncertain times. Everyone is feeling the pinch of 'having to do more with less' due to declining sales, staff reductions and budget cuts, so this year's Web 2.0 Expo's theme of "The Power of Less" fit the climate and mood like a glove.
Even if the economy hadn't tanked, the Web 2.0 hype was overdue for its own market correction because there was clearly too many startups touting useless apps that only added to the noise and didn't provide real value. At this year's Web 2.0 Expo, attendees were focused on the ideas and solutions that will translate into real value and ultimately sales.
As Stephen Elop, president of Microsoft’s business division, explained to attendees in an on-stage interview with Tim O’Reilly, founder and CEO of O’Reilly Media, Elop said that the consumer elements of Web 2.0 are being translated and brought into the business setting and are being combined with the data and social graphs that reside within an enterprise to provide real value. He goes on to explain how companies are "translating that value into something customers are willing to pay for." He's correct in saying that because at the end of the day that's exactly what needs to transpire.
Companies need to create products that people want and focus on delivering value that people are willing to pay for. Not an easy feat, but if you can achieve this then you stand a pretty good chance at surviving, if not flourishing, in these uncertain times.
The Bubblicious team decided to talk with a few companies in both the business and consumer space that offer social computing applications and services that deliver efficiency, increased productivity, streamlined workflows that connect people to each other and the information they seek. Watch our highlight reel below and stayed tuned all week for the full interviews with each company:

* Tuesday: MindTouch
* Wednesday: Topix

Bubblicious Reporter Alison McNeill recently presented Bubby awards to five winners at Twiistup 5, which was held at Hangar:8 at the Santa Monica airport. Today concludes our Twiistup coverage with our final interview with Christine Elia , founder and CEO of Closet Couture, who was awarded the Bubby award for "Favorite Fashionista Startup."
Closet Couture is a social fashion site that "connects people of stylish minds with those who live or work around them," according the Closet Couture site. In addition to being a community of fashionistas, it also serves as a utility site where people can get help with their personal wardrobes, or even help with just one outfit for a special occasion, from either other users or professional stylists. We first discovered Closet Couture at TechCrunch50 and have closely followed them since. We love them and hope you do, too.

As Alison McNeill stated in last Friday's post, "we were questioned about our criteria in choosing the winners and the truth is that there are none. Is there another word to describe Karen Hartline besides bubbly? Well, perhaps “ Twitter Addict ” would have also been appropriate, but we chose to award her with the “Most Bubbly” Bubby award at Twiistup 5 .
Many of you probably know Karen as the events coordinator for Mashable , but she has branched out and is also doing her thing for Blurb . But whether she’s hosting or attending the party, she’s always the life of the party, which is why we presented her with the 'Most Bubbly" award.
For those of you hitting SXSWi, swing by and say hi to Karen and the Blurb team at the Mashable Blurb SX Bash on Monday night, March 16. Blurb is also on the show floor at booth #408, so swing by and check out Blurb books. Maybe you have a book inside you waiting to be published Blurb style.
If you missed our highlight reel or the first three Bubby awards, check out our posts from earlier this week: Causecast , Viewdle and Patricia Handschiegel .
And stop by tomorrow as we present our final Twiistup 5 interview with Christine Elia, founder and CEO of Closet Couture , and winner of the "Favorite Fashionista Startup" Bubby award.

So yeah, we’re pretty sure that make her a kick-ass female.

On Friday, we posted our highlight reel of the Bubby Award winners and everyday this week we'll be posting one interview from each of the five winners. Bubblicious Reporter Alison McNeill recently presented the Bubby awards to each winner at Twiistup 5, which was held at Hangar:8 at the Santa Monica airport. First up is Causecast , winner of the "Favorite Do-Gooder" Bubby award.
In our interview with Mateo Gutierrez and Kate Stahnke , director of product development at Causecast, Stahnke explains how Causecast is a platform where non-profit organizations and individuals join together to further their philanthropic goals. In addition to connecting non-profits with people who want to make a difference, it also provides them with the tools and information needed to support and further the cause they care about.
Causecast also has leaders that are dedicated and passionate about facilitating and finding ways "to help, donate, organize, promote and inspire others to make a powerful and positive impact on this world - together," according to the Causecast site.
For example, Aaron Cohen is a human rights activist and Causecast leader who has dedicated himself to stopping human trafficking. At Causecast, people can learn more about human trafficking on Cohen's Causecast profile page where he has a blog, videos, photos, and a place for supporters to leave comments and support the fight to end human trafficking.
Causecast also has many celebrities participating such as Matthew Modine and Jenny McCarthy , but it's not about being a celebrity. It's about coming together as a community to make the world better. As Stahnke says, "celebrity or non-celebrity, if you're doing amazing things in the world, you're a leader in our eyes and we want to give you a platform."
If you care about a particular cause and want to lend your support by giving a donation, volunteering, attending an event or becoming a Causecast leader, join Causecast and do your part to make a difference in the lives of others.

The hopes and visions of online video a decade ago finally came to fruition in 2006. Over the past three years we have seen tremendous progress in Web video and in 2009 the number of professionally produced and user-generated videos, user adoption, and the introduction of new episodic Web video series will reach new heights.
We caught up with industry expert Greg Goodfried at the NewTeeVee Live conference back in November where he shared his expertise and thoughts during the Bridging the Gap Between Television and Online panel. Also on the panel was Writer and Producer Jesse Alexander , who we interviewed here . The two spoke about the idea of transmedia and the convergence of new and old media.
Goodfried is co-founder, president and COO of EQAL , a social entertainment company. He is also the co-creator and executive producer of the online video series’ lonelygirl15 , KateModern , and LG15: The Resistance .

NewTeeVee Live's most recent conference "Television Reinvented" brought together the top online video producers, technologists, executives and venture capitals to explore where Web video is headed and how old media is adapting. We were particularly interested in the panel on Bridging the Gap Between Television and Online and pulled a few of the panelists aside afterwards to discuss where its all headed. First up is Jesse Alexander , a writer and producer whose resume includes hit TV shows such as Alias , Lost and Heroes . Jesse talked with us about the concept of "transmedia" that describes the paradigm shift in the way audiences get their entertainment and how he has incorporated this into the shows he works on.
