I think that the time that ,that song was recorded is what makes it so great,...it really is a Great song but it is also very cheesey and Lame in a way kinda like Iggy Pop when he tries too hard,.. ,..because obviously it is so immature and poppy,...it trully was the 'invention' of the 1990's right then and there !! Immediately Like 6 major Labels called my house phone inquiring about it,...I remember that Craig Aaronson at Geffen Records told me that he had 'never heard anything like it before in his life" but that still he didn't feel it in his heart somehow - I know its not exactly really a 'liberal' song - its too concerned with truthfulness.....it really does sound good when you crank it up loud - I tell people - don't listen to my songs quietly down low volume,..they don't work that way - you gotta crank them LOUDLY,...they are classics,..sorta alot like Ziggy era David Bowie,..thats how we are". Hagins says that he didn't officially begin to rethink the potential of 'White Black' until nearly one year after it was recorded when the L.A. Riots happened; "They had Rodney King on tv in the middle of the riots and he was just devestated and suddenly he uttered "we're all stuck here" and when i heard that - I was stunned,..I 'knew' that that was a moment that God - The Lord was talking to 'me' and 'only ' to 'me',...thats when i was like "oh shit,..I missed my own boat !! I blew it,....I immediately began mass marketing the song everywhere and everybody liked it but people were like ,..damn,...this song is powerful,..its scary -yet its cheesey too,..man its weird,..its got it all,..its silly, its funny, its controversial, its lame,..and all at the same time,..its really GOOD !!!" - "ITS THE DEFINITION OF A CLASSIC" Says Hagins. Guitarist Phil Keegan would come up with four very interesting new song foundations but the drumming patterns of Clark Hagins would also aid heavily in the new direction of G.e. "3/4" - a song played in 3/4 time signature with sad pathetic lyrics about losing a love meshed along well with Keegan's gloomey grungey guitars and overdubs....Six feet under - which is a bluesy cut...now is one of ge's all time favorites ,..as Keegan handles virtually all of the production on the track - ,...the very marvelous song "Snake' is a fine cut - what with it's lyrics about a guy being 'set up' on fake rape accusations,..but the obvious most wonderous cut has to be 1989's 'A CURRENT AFFAIR' a song played in Hagins' bizarre 5/16 drum signature time and made into a classic by the muddy heavy wah wah guitar of Phil Keegan,..."Don't kill one,..You must kill many" exclaims Haggins in this very political apparent 'pro death penalty" song which today in 2009, Hagins says is among Ge's greatest tracks ever - AND IT IS !! ======================== GREENHOUSE EFFECT HAVE landed recently in the top categorys of 'Grunge rock' and 'Emo' with the aid of the help of tracks like 1992's MANIPULATION and the crucial 'AGENDA' CD Produced by Bill Krodel and Mark Nathanson and released In June 92' by Massachusetts Indie Label 'Rock City Productions' and executive Producer jeffery Snowe. This bizarrely interesting tracks rocks out as if the FOO FIGHTERS - BUT THIS THING was recorded in the summer of 1991 - even before knowledge of the coming NIRVANA !! WITH EACH record, G.e. would constantly 'evolve' their guitar driven garage sound and by the time they got to the summer of 1991 and May 91's beating of Rodney G. King, G.e. had come up with even more great material - enough even to top the opera "Going Legit" !! ' A WHITE BLACK THANG' would be a track long ago written by Hagins as early as 1990 and laughed at as 'silly' by G.e's first guitarist Phil Keegan (Dr. Phil). Hagins would hold onto the demo idea ...and again present it to Rick Carmody during the 'Going Legit' sessions in December 1990 through February 91'.....Carmody, too, thought that the song with the broad chorus and light then heavy guitar parts was too 'commercial and cheesey' sounding so Hagins then took his 'advanced' ideas of now high tech 'grunge rock' to the major labels - once more..., playing a demo version of 'White black' to several "A & R" guys in Hollywood - who said the song sounded like a poor man's Pixies or Stooges rip off....Undaunted, hagins would record four songs alone - minus Carmody with Producer Bill Krodel beginning in August of 1991,...drummer Greg Tarpley may have shown at the recording sessions which produced 'Subdue', 'white black', 'manipulation, and BEATLES COVER 'PLEASE PLEASE ME' ,....but he did not perform on any track as Hagins handled the drumming' "Manipulation" would be a bizarre 'punk rock but pop' like uptempo track that was so strange along with 'White Black' that Hagins chose not to release these songs instead concentrating on a new idea he was working on to be recorded in March of 1992 called simply "Brandy".... Producers Bill Krodel and Nathanson both thought that 'White Black' was one of the weirdest things they had ever heard but that it was 'too controversial' a subject matter to release - another reason why Hagins kept these songs under wraps til May of 1992 and the sudden 'Agenda' after the Los Angeles Riots.... 'After the riots, White black just seemed perfect" says higgins TMZ ============================= The classic 'Going Legit' era Greenhouse Effect song "22nd Street" from March of 1991. This song moves along more like u2 or the Cure than a garage rocking bluesy G.e. song you might expect. There are heavy trappings of things like David Bowie and Echo and the Bunnymen here as Clark hagins takes over the full reighn of G.e. as by this time guitarist Phil Keegan (Dr. Phil) has exited the band and traveled north to the Bay area California. The 'trippy' 'Star trek' like guitar breaks in this are of rock legend ! The 'Going Legit" album was almost entirely recorded by Clark hagins alone at Lomita California's Accessive Light and Sound Studio and it's 12 track Akai recording system as operated by Producer Andrew Houston and Hagins. Bassist Rick Carmody performs on EVERY 'Going Legit' track among them 'Star', Hey Negrita, and "America the Beautiful" and the classic "Wilson Phillips' a 'metal' like grunge song,.... Carmody and Hagins wrote the album 'Going Legit' together at '251' in Torrance,....though Higgins mostly comes up with everything,....originally, this album was a 'concept' 48 song album,...but due to money issues - only 8 Going Legit songs were ever recorded in this era of G.e. The eventual "Rock Opera White Suburban Liar$' has it's origins in the 1991 'Going Legit' concept about a homeless Vietnam or Iraq Vet from San Pedro named Maury who sits in the street and writes poetry ala sort-of like the movie "Barfly" with Michey Rourke.... "Going Legit" was to be turned into a full fledged movie and Hagins submitted a script to several movie studios as it was rejected.....
