Over the summer I transferred several reels of our family's old 8mm home movies from the 1950s. They were mostly shot by my grandfather, who I guess was not always entirely sure he was working the camera correctly. Sprinkled throughout footage of family vacations and winter sledding expeditions were images of my grandfather peeking his face into the lens. I thought it was kind of funny, so I cut them together to create a portrait of my grandfather trying, like a lot of us, to figure out just how exactly all these crazy contraptions work.
