An AIDS program that began at the Harlem Hospital 20 years ago is now serving as a model throughout Africa and in Asia. This globally recognized HIV/AIDS program was conceived and is directed by Wafaa El-Sadr, a Columbia University physician specializing in infectious diseases and director of the International AIDS Care and Treatment Center (ICAP) at the Mailman School of Public Health. El-Sadr is a pioneering leader in public health who was recently recognized by the MacArthur Foundation with a Genius Award for not just her tour de force work in treating HIV/AIDs and tuberculosis, but also for the promise her work holds for future breakthroughs.
